It is fairly nice. However, for those who don't have Little Snitch (and why
don't you?) you should know that Chrome installs a little bundle which calls
home to the Chocolate Factory every ever so often. It's inside
~/Library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate. It calls home, or at least tries to and
would have succeeded if I hadn't had Little Snitch installed, whether or not
you have prefs set for autoupdate and if you delete it, the next time you run
Chrome it's re-installed.

If it is like the Google Earth phoner-home, you can fool it by leaving
the launchd job installed, but disabled. Lingon can disable them.

It sucks that Google say you must run their updater in the background to
continue using Google Earth. Why not just run the updater when you run
the program? Why does it have to be constantly running in the
background?

I donno. I just removed Google Earth and that was the end of that.

What waves? Camden Lock?

That can get quite choppy in a stiff breeze.

A friend is suggesting I get a refurb tower-type thing and monitor,
which would be cheaper.
Not a bad idea, actually. You'd be able to upgrade the monitor whenever you
wanted without having to buy a whole new machine.
I've got one of the towers (early 8-core) and it's a lovely machine. Only bad
thing is the optical drive - it's too loud to use it to watch DVDs. Apart
from that it runs 24/7 most of the time.
I should point out that the machine itself is whisper quiet. It's only the
optical drive that's a bit "whooooosh"-y.

Quiet is good, if you can put up with the space. I have a new PC which
is a i7 860, so appears as an 8 core and was amazed at how quiet it was.
I still do have my G4/dp1.25 which is the same volume level as sitting
in heavy traffic!

Quite a lot of that noise is probably coming from the big fan at the back. I
replaced mine with one from Dorothy Bradbury and the noise level halved at
least.
If you do the same then be sure to point out it's for a Mac - the polarity
needs reversing. How ironic is that?

Hmm, maybe I should look at this...
Installing extra hard drives is a doddle as well.

Its an old machine that I dont use anymore, and really should just stick
it on ebay for a few beans, so probably not worth the effort.

How much do they fetch nowadays?

I haven't looked but I can't imagine it would be much.

A quick furtle on eBay seems to suggest just that, although I didn't find a
1.25GHz machine in my admittedly brief furtle.

What's the power consumption of the MacPros like, compared to an iMac?

I've no way of knowing, sorry.

There are two out of data KB articles:
<http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2836> and <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3559>
The MacPro figures don't seem to include a monitor.

I was going to ask that, as I've seen people (here or elsewhere, can't
remember now) saying that they did use up a lot of power. Interesting,
though. It does look like you could use it to heat up the flat ...

Clearly not. If a google wave started whispering your name, it would
take a long time until it reached the end, and then you wouldn't be able
to find out where to edit it

Funnily (or is it 'funnest'?) the version (rather an old one I think) of
Google Earth that I have hasn't got those two files..
What brand PC pls?
It was a mesh. Took them quite a while to deliver it, but it is a nice
machine, i7 860 (which is what I was looking for), 8gb ram, 2 x 1TB
disks, extra FireWire and graphics card upgrade, just under £900.
if you put it on your 'thinking about' list, they phone to offer you a
discount!

I read that as "extra-hard drives".

You need to get out more, mate :-)
Thanks - worth knowing!
