Any recommendations please?

I quite often like to plan things like rooms to scale - this time it's a
complicated carpet/flooring arrangement.

Cheaper the better!

OmniGraffle can do this, you can set arbitrary scales quite easily.

Inkscape. It's the only program I trust to not mangle dimensions between
screen and printing, which is rather important when working with scale
drawings and laser cut objects. You don't have to draw to scale as it'll
accept original units like metres - I just made a 100m x 100m drawing and it
was happy - though you might want to declare that (say) 1cm = 1m to make it
easier when you print things out.

I use an unoffcial build (r12791) with a nicer native Mac GUI (rather than
XQuartz), the latest build can be found here:

I’m with Chris Ridd on Omnigraffle. It does not mangle dimensions on the
printers I have. Including spanning a large drawing over several sheets
respecting the printer’s hardware margins.

Another one to try if you a familiar with traditional drafting is Cadintosh
from Lemkesoft the maker of GraphicConverter. It’s the familiar shareware
purchase, which is much cheaper than OmniGraffle.

not sure if it's quite what you want, but Intaglio on the App Store
is worth a look.

Inkscape is definitely cheaper than OmniGraffle. Thanks for pointing out
it is replacing the ghastly X11 UI with something more native.

Many thanks all.

Omnigraffle - I tried the demo, but it's a bit pricey and in the half
hour or so spent I didn't find it that easy to use.

Inkscape - didn't get on with this at all, and found the interface baffling.

Drawberry - almost there, but clunky and unresponsive.

Intalgio - yep, just about right. Easy to set up a 10cm grid, and drop
shapes and arrange and label. And I'd happened to buy it in a Macheist
bundle back in June 2014. I wouldn't have twigged if it hadn't been
mentioned by James!

Doesn't matter now since you're sorted, but Autodesk Graphic (formerly
iDraw) is similar and a lot cheaper.
