Apple provide (or used to provide) a three-year warranty for purchases
made through the Higher Education Store.

I can't find any clear description of this on the Apple site itself.

Does the HE agreement that procured this warranty still exist?

It seems to but noty at the deal it once was.

pretending to buy the standard mac mini as a normal person :-)

it's £499 including VAT

Applecare is £129

as an educational user (at work selected educational store top right of apple/uk

it's £462.20 including VAT

Applecare is £90

Previouusly I'm sure Applecare for education was only £~30 but teh TCs were aslightly differnt IIRC

the Ts&Cs seem the same now.

For up to three years from your computer's original purchase date, the AppleCare Protection Plan gives you direct, one-stop access to Apple's award-winning telephone technical support for questions about Apple hardware, OS X, iLife, and iWork. And you get global repair coverage for your Mac — both parts and labor — through convenient service options.

We've even made it easy to enroll. In Fact, you don't really have to do anything. When you purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan with a new Mac, you'll be automatically registered in the plan. Shortly after your new Mac ships, we will mail you an AppleCare Welcome Packet, which includes your Proof of Coverage, as well as a Getting Started Guide with plan terms and conditions.

The education store is not the same as the higher education store.

See http://appleagreement.procureweb.ac.uk. The extended warranty is
a consequence of an agreement with the universities making Apple the
sole supplier of "Microcomputers with Apple Operating Systems".

I'm not talking about AppleCare, but about the three-year warranty.

yes that seems to be it, one thing I didn't expect to see was the on-site repair where they come to your work place.
I';m not sure if buyong under HE or education whether or not they;'d repair it at your home adress though.

It seems that the Applecare UPLIFT is a better option than standard 3 year Applecare.

Yes, this is very misleading. Intentionally so. If you want the free link
that lets you into the apple higher education website let me know i'll post
it, buy what you want, they dont check you are a student.

yes two differtn Applecares it seems, but why?

or rather why have an uplift one that costs less than the full version but is equal to the £129 one but only costing £39 so why not just call it Applecare .

That won't work I tried it at home as I work for a univ. and wanted to order at home but couldn't .

I dont; think I've been checked and I've not heard of anyone being checked or rejected. Obviosuly the <slutter cough> the PC II use for ordering is checked that it;'s on the univ. network but that seems to be it.

Did you have to give a student ID or anything, just wondering how they know.
A local chemist offers students a 10% discount but only when they produce a studetn union card or other proof of being a student.

Oh yes - the first time I ordered as an OU student I gave them my OU
student ID. Since then they haven't asked. HE discount can be applied to
one desktop and one laptop per year last time I asked.

Sorry if anyone thought I was suggesting this as a way to get the HE
prices without being an HE sudent :(

That's what I assmed not sure about iPads though, just tied interestingly enough HE gets you a discount on the retina ipad £387.60 ipad2 £319.20, but not the ipad mini. No discount on phones.
I don;t think you can get the discounts in-store either (even with proof) as I tried when gettting a retina ipad.
I wonder if you're allowed to have more than one ipad regarding discounts.
I could do without an excuse to buy a rahter cute ipad mini :-)
but no discount so it's not educational, the minis must be toy iPads, so now I need a toy too .

If you login to the HE store and save the link it'll still work despite not
passing through a uni network if you try from home.

If the link works I would like it. Nowadays I am retired but still
officially a member of my department. So I am entitled to the discount
(and I think could get it by telephoning), but I very rarely go into
college and would like to have a look at the HE pricing.

I use the Apple HE website from home by using the university's
VPN. Of course you might consider it overkill to set up a VPN
just for that.

OK here's the link that I use,

http://store.apple.com/uk_edu_5000760

I've noticed that using another HE college the link is differnt so I'm guessing each college has it's own link and that if Apple wants to they could cross check to see if the person paying for the product is actually working there or not.

So feel free to use it for broswing prices but not actually ordering.

if you want to do search for a parcticaular product price I can do that too, or if you let me/us know the details of your college i.e town and name then we can send you the link to that.

That's a shame. I also use VPN to access my university's online
resources (I'm an honorary research fellow). Not only does this get me
easy access to things like Apple's HE discount prices but it means I can
access electronic journals from home which my university subscribes to,
which is really important for me as I publish more papers myself.

I set up the university's VPN on my iPad because it was by far the
easiest way of doing it. Works like a dream.

Just a. guess re the iPad mini. The discounts on iPads are quite small, and

Yup, same here. If your University already have a VPN then you should be
able to use it. All standard University resources will be available to
you from wherever you may be (home, holiday, conference, etc).

Good to know. I don't think I will ever need it, but I could ask if
necessary. I'm an honorary research fellow myself, having retired quite
some time ago, but don't do much nowadays, and as most of the colleagues
I knew are also retired there's little point in going in to college to
keep up connections.

One of the advantags of academia is being part of the community even
when retired.

I think it's down to what's educational or seen to be used in education or they want to be seen. Even M$ do student discounts for office but not for the Xbox ;-)

What I find interesting is that there's the Higher educational discount is differnt from the further education discount & school discount, NO discount on ipads there, see we at universities are the only people worthy of giving a discount to when we prchase full size ipads :-) <smug mode on>
