Yeah, I did it.
I decided I wanted a pair of HomePod minis, as I'm now using the Apple
One account, and really making good use of the Music module in
particular. I also wanted to tidy up the living room a bit too. But to
do that, I needed to be able to play the turntable through the HomePods.
So with some trepidation, I got a Behringer UFO202 (RCA to USB adapter).
It was only about £18 on Amazon, so worth a punt. I also have an old
spare iPhone 6S, so got an OTG connector as well, so that can stay
hooked up permanently.
I installed AirChord on the iPhone, and tested the concept, and it does
work.
The HomePod Minis arrived (Very are doing the Space Grey ones for £79 at
the moment), setup, and tested.
I wasn't expecting great things, but actually, it's sounds bloody good.
Not as good as the NAD + Tannoys, but actually good enough that I can
remove the old kit from the lounge.
The Minis of course don't have the overall oomph to challenge the old
amp/speaker combo, but overall the sound is well balanced and detailed.
The lighter bass is actually a good thing here, being in a modern
semi-detached, it does mean we won't annoy the neighbour. Besides, I
personally prefer a better detailed mid-high end to a bass heavy sound
anyway.
To play to a stereo pair of HomePods you need the obtain AirChord 2,
which is currently in the Beta programme, but it works just fine. I can
even remote control the HomePods from my other devices (for volume
adjustment at least).
You can also use Garageband, but it's not an elegant solution.
