I cant see if it's doable.
So, is this possible and if so, how - and would there be image
degradation ?
Thanks for any input

Yes

amongst others.
Play back a standard iTunes video/BBC iPlayer show full screen, it'll be
similar to that at a guess, a bit pixelated but watchable from a few
feet back.

Above email address IS valid.

Interesting.
Any idea if you can get an S-Video version of that, too?

The universal dock will do composite out, if that's any help to you:

A 30second google found some docks out there with s-video
http://www.b2cmarket.net/ia5852.html?currency=GBP
so should be a cable too I'd imagine.
I've not used it on the iPod/iPhone, but I did try my old N95 out to the
TV which worked quite nicely.
The only real use I found of that was when a friends Nokia 5800 screen
went, we had the phone plugged into the TV so she could turn on BT &
sync the phone back to the mac to get her contacts off. Quite fun trying
to guess where on screen to press.
Ah, but the situation with the iPod Touch and iPhone is different, video
output is only supported on docks that have Apple's ID chip built in.
Deal extreme have a cheap dock, which seems to work at the moment with
firmware 3.0 but for how long?

Yes I have one, it works fine with my FoB TV.

Would that work with an older Toshiba TV I wonder?
On the front of the TV are:
1. S-Video socket
2. Yellow socket with "video" above it (is that the "Composite video"?)
3. White socket with "L/MONO" above it
4. Red socket with "R" above it
(It also says "AUDIO" above the white/red sockets)
Now I can't connect my MacBook to the TV (I used to connect my old iMac to
the TV via S-Video), this would be just the ticket!
Cheers ... Mark

Yep should work, the yellow socket is the composite video, I've plugged
my old N95 into the front of my old Sony TV in the same way.
Ooh - interesting. Are you using it with an iPod or iPhone?
And all you do is connect it to an S-Video socket?
Cheers ... Mark
iPod 60GB Video, it also has the phone sockets connected to the TV for
sound. And you need to turn on TV output on the iPod.
Hmmmm, I have a dock a bit like that already. Not entirely sure it does
output from an iPhone.... will have to try it once I find a spare
S-Video cable.

In my case that was "use an old ADB cable".
Heh, yes, did that. Didn't work.
Going into Cardiff tomorrow, so will see if I can get a cable from the
Apple Store.
This could potentially revolutionise my business travelling, especially
now most places have decent LCD TVs with a variety of inputs.

Yes, that was why I got the dock in the first place. Although TBH given
that I only watch the odd movie when tucked up in bed I found it easier
to buy a pair of +3 dioptre reading glasses to enlarge the iPod screen
up to something watchable. I was also quite tempted by those LCD specs
that can be connected to an iPod.

Has anybody actually used those? At the price, they're not exactly an
impulse buy but they look as thought they might be excellent.
But like Steve, I find that the quality of the screen on my iTouch is
such that viewing it directly (with reading glasses, and headphones for
the audio) is really pretty pleasant. I've watched hour long programmes
and it was astonishingly immersive and eyestrain-free.

Sadly I've not had a chance to try the Video Glasses in question. I have
tried a cheaper pair and was impressed but they do make me feel
disoriented - only to be used when sitting in a chair or lying in bed.
The iPod screen is good enough for most uses and I've downloaded and
enjoyed many films from Archive.org. It was how I watched The Power of
Nightmares, which is available for iPod on Archive.org.
I also have EyeTV set up to record TV for time-shifting that I tend to
watch on iPod, and it automatically exports 640x480 video to iTunes
complete with program metadata.

I have that as a bunch of MP4s. Splendid stuff.

Note that there are other ones with smaller virtual displays for less
than half the price. Tempting!

Now that I'm back home, I find that my dock is this one:
3GV9M>
Which is extremely cheap IMO. It works well with my iPod, but it's clear
that it won't work with more modern versions or with the iPhony.
Well, I came back with a Belkin iPhone / iPod to composite cable.
It's currently hooked up to the TV playing back a film ripped to the
iPhone. It's pretty damned good.
Oh, and I bought a new telly, too. My old Panasonic 32" CRT has been
upgraded to a Panasonic 37" plasma :)
Just need an Apple TV now....
