The Epson Stylus Color 900 ink jet printer has stopped printing from the
yellow cartridge.
After speaking to Epson and their approved repair centre, it appears the
ink jet head will need replacing. By the time we add up the cost of the
new head, labour, carriage and VAT, it’s cheaper to buy a new 900. The
guy at the call centre did say, Epson have been having problems with the
900’s head.

Can anyone tell me were I can have by a new head for the 900 at
reasonable price.
Will it need specialist tools to install and set up?

Ta for the help.

I've seen an Epson 600 and 740, both not printing black, colour OK. I gather
Epson printers have a poor reputation for head problems. I can't help with a
supplier for parts, but listed below is data I saved from web sources
relating to this problem, it may help you. They don't specifically relate to
your printer, but to Epsons in general.

You can clean the heads without removing them from printer. You got two
simple way to do that: 1. First you have to get empty ink cartridge then
inject the fluid into the empty ink cartridge.Put back the cartridge to the
printer and do cleaning few times by pressing cleaning button.Compare the
self test result time to time. 2. First you have to unlock the carriage
unit( the lock is under the print head) then pull the head to the left you
will see a pump assy. at your right side and the small container on the top,
drop few drops of fluid to the container.Leave it at lease haft an hour then
do cleaning few times by pressin cleaning button. Don't forget to compare
the seft test print out from time to time.

Remove the printhead from the carriage, remove inktanks, place
printhead in 1/4" of hot water with some ammonia, beware the fumes,
also using a syringe without a needle drop some fluid down the tank
feed pipes, if possible use distilled water, if not previously boiled
water

Dave, Isopropyl Alcohol at 99.99% is fine. If you use 90%, it contains 10%
water and it will corrode other components. If you are a printer repair
shop, we have another cleaning solution available which is superior to
alcohol. However, if that is all you have available, fill an old cartridge
with alcohol and just give it a number of cleaning cycles. Unfortunately
replacing the print head is not economically viable. Buy an HP printer the
next time. Hope this helps.

The symptom is missing horizontal lines
through text or graphics -- or no print at
all. This occurs when the water based inks
dry at the print heads in amounts that the
head cleaning routine cannot dislodge.

The newer Epson Stylus Color series print
heads are particularly affected.

It can happen whether you refill your inkjet
cartridges or not.

One contributing factor is turning off the
printer from a power bar. This prevents a
complete shutdown and docking of the heads
at their docking stations. You will notice
some activity even after turning the printer
off by its switch, as it continues to take a
trickle charge.

To unclog the heads:

- Run 3 cleaning cycles from the Epson
Utility

- Turn off printer, and restart in Test
Print mode

- When cartridges/ print heads are at
extreme left of carriage, quickly spray 3
shots of Windex or Ammonia onto docking
station(s) affected, and turn off printer
for 5 minutes

- Repeat process as needed until perfect
test prints are restored - usually 2
procedures

We've saved 14 printers this way.
