Well, decided to dive in & got myself a still-wrapped 1st Gen iPhone off
eBay. Hooray! However...

On my iMac, I have mail set up to collect from four POP accounts (three
Gmail, and one other). I went through the initial sync process and have my
contacts and so forth now on the iPhone. I also have my mailboxes now
configured on the iPhone (although I never had the intention of actively
doing this). I thought no more of that until I touched/swiped something while
exploring. All of a sudden I had 44 new messages in one of the mailboxes.
Now, the thing is that I had WiFi switched off at the time, so assume this
was done via GPRS (I'm sure I saw the icon). The question is; is this
internet/GPRS access likely to be the same as when I used it on my O2 Nokia
6300 via the Googlemail app to check my (one) gmail account? I also used
Opera Mobile very occasionally, but don't think I ever used more than my 1Mb
inclusive monthly allowance.

OK - just checked...my O2 account shows that I use(d) wap.o2.co.uk on my
Nokia, but on the iPhone it's set up to use mobile.o2.co.uk (I'm sure I've
used the iBoko via Bluetooth tethering in the past, but think this must also
have been via mobile.o2.co.uk - it was pretty expensive if I remember
correctly). I tried wap.o2.co.uk instead of mobile.o2.co.uk, but it won't
work on the iPhone - is this correct?

I had intended to just use Safari to check my gmail if I had to when outside
of WiFi access, and thought I could do so as I had on the Nokia with Opera
Mobile.

Cheers ... Mark

Is your question related to the expense of downloading data over the
carrier network? If you are using an iPhone, you want to make sure that
you have an iPhone contract and SIM. The data is unlimited and part of
the monthly subscription. If you have a non-iPhone SIM in the phone then
you will accrue data charges as before and could run up a large bill
very quickly.

Ah - no. It's SIM-free - I'm using it with my own O2 SIM card. I suppose if
I just delete the mobile.o2.co.uk setting that'll stop it connecting if I'm
outside a WiFi network. Pity there wasn't on 'on/off' for that as I might
want to quickly check email sometimes..

well you can set it up for manual checking so it only checks when you click
on the e-mail icon. I would recommend phoning o2 and getting your contract
changed to at least include the unlimited data package which is either 7.50
or 10 quid a month and it will keep the costs down as they can spiral when
using the iphone as its very data intensive.

If you are out of contract and don't want to sign up for a long
contract, the O2 Simplicity 600 is particularly good value at the moment
(offer till the end of the month).

£20 a month for 600 mins + unlimited texts each month for life, plus on
the 600 minute and above tarriffs you get one free bolt on so you can
get unlimited web/email for the iPhone included.

I was on a lower Simplicity tarriff, and even though I would never use
up 600 minutes, it was better value than adding the 7.50 web bolton.

Is this 'unlimited' web/email via mobile.o2.co.uk (i.e. internet on GPRS)?
Also on the specs page it says: - "Browse the internet on your mobile for up
to £1 per day" - anyone know what that might mean? (I have emailed them but
not had an answer yet).

I've been on the Simplicity £15 for a while - this looks pretty good.

So you're saying for £20 a month you get:

600 minutes of talking, +
unlimited web and e-mail +
unlimited texts each month for life?

Sounds like a good deal, except...

what does 'unlimited texts each month for life' mean? Surely not for my life?
Or the life of my phone? And if it's the life of the contract, then it's a
bit obvious to say so.

And why '_each month_ for life'?

Life of the contract (which on Simplicity is one month). I suppose '_each
month_' /is/ redundant. Probably a carry-over from the limited text deals?

It also says: "Browse the internet on your mobile for up
to Ł1 per day"

This confuses me.

Yes, I was on Simplicity 15, and when I phoned to get the bolton when I
got my iPhone, I did ask whether the web bolton included email, I was
told it was web and e-mail.

I've not yet had a paper bill since I moved over to the 600 minute
tarriff but I've just logged onto my O2 web account, and can confirm
that it is included

I think the reason for this is that although one gets one included
bolt-on on this tarriff, one doesn't necessarily have to choose the
unlimited web option.

Thanks. Am just halfway through an email conversation with O2 right now to
confirm I can get the Online 25 (600 minutes + 1000 texts + Unlimited Web)
for £20 (until tomorrow!). Seems like a very good deal!

Cheers ... Mark
