There's no italic style for Lucida Grande on my Mac - never has been,
from what I recall ...

As a fairly standard non-serif font, I find this a little odd.

Anybody any idea why?

Apple has only licensed the regular and bold roman versions. You can
buy the rest of the family or force an italic look in programs such as
Word and InDesign.

Specifically, one would guess, they only licensed those two because
Lucida Grande was the default desktop font, and in general, italics and
other variants aren't good choices for UIs.

Thank you.

I quite like Lucida Grande, a nice clear, simple font which I tend to
use it as my default font. Very occassionaly, I want to italicise a word
and I can't ... Pages, Keynote, NeoOffice, etc won't generate an italic
variant.

Just tried with some of my quite many wordprocessors and found that
Pages 09 and Bean 3.x won't create italics. Also tried a few minor apps
which also won't make italics. Common for all these are that they are
using the build-in font engine from the system.

Tried AppleWorks 6.2.9, Filemaker Pro 11.x, MarinerWrite 3.9.x,
OpenOffice 4.x, NisusWriter Pro 1.5.x/2.x, Ragtime 6.x, MSWord 2008. All
of these will make italics when hightlighting a word, sentence,
paragraph or full text and then use COM+I...

Cheers, Erik Richard
