I've struggled with an iomega StorCenter ix2 NAS for a long time,
principally acquired as a backup device for several other devices:

1. Not exactly obvious to set up - took me a couple of days to get it
going.
2. Crap application to access from desktop - HTML access OK but slow and
clunky.
3. Iomega very slow to update firmware and, following an OSX release
where Apple changed some of the afp supported protocols, iomega gave up
on updating firmware.
4. The only device I've had in 25 years where a HDD has physically
failed - which also seemed to partially corrupt the firmware.
5. Poor support - nobody at iomega seemed to have a clue.
6. Used Time Machine Buddy to try to work out what was going wrong - so
many error messages .....

So, forget about iomega for NAS, although, I do have an external iomega
firewire HDD which hasn't been the slightest problem.

Having saved up some pennies, I invested in a Synology DS213+
DiskStation NAS. Plugged it into my LAN, entered a web address -
everything was downloaded automatically and it set itself up
automatically. No desktop application for management but a nice a slick
HTML interface. Now doing a full system plus external drives Time
Machine backup - within an hour and 20 mins of opening the boxes.

Fingers crossed but, so far, looks like a considerably better designed
system.

Almost all the Iomega NAS devices I've bought for customers over the
last 5 years have failed. So I don't buy them any more.

By contrast the Buffalo NAS devices have worked OK - except that if
stood up and they fall over while running, they do break the disks. So
I install them lying flat.

Only worked with one Synology NAS, so can't really comment.

I've never seen one last more than two years, I suspect they spend a
lot of time over 50'C. Dreadful things, and Iomega seem to have messed
with the format of the drives enough so that a normal Linux can't
easily get at the data.

The Netgear Duo and NV series are sturdy and reliable too; QNAP seem
to be good so far. It's a stupid design decision having them upright
by default, it really is.

Very new to it all and not willing to spend too much until I'm sure it's
what I want - but a ZyXEL NSA320 bought recently seems pretty good to me
so far.

Whoops - I meant NSA325 with the very nippy USB3 port.

Ah, it's probably the power supply. They're cheap and nasty.
