iPhone Battery Packs

I use my iPhone a lot whilst at work - and often in low-signal areas,
which tends to drain the battery quickly.

On a good day, I drive between several sites, so get a chance to charge
it up in the car. On a bad day, I'll be in one site all day, which kills
my battery.

Has anyone tried any of the add-on battery packs out there? - I fancy a
Morphie JuicePack Air but they're almost the same price in UKP as they
are in USD... so are there any cheaper alternatives I could consider?

I decided I wanted a travel charger that was not specific to the iPhone,
and ended up with the curiously named "Just Mobile Gum Pro", reviewed
here:

I think I paid about £35 or so. It's not as convenient as the packs that
are specifically tailored for the iPhone, but it does mean that I can
use if for charging anything that cahrges via USB (except, annoyingly,
my Sony Reader, which appears to only charge from an actual computer).

The Pro version (which I have) will fully charge a 3GS just over three
times. I think the standard "Gum" will do two one and a half charges,
but is half the size and a fair bit cheaper.

Oh, and they're often listed in UK stores as the Just Mobile PP-07 and
PP-08, if you're looking for bargains.

The big issue for me is that the Prius cuts power to the lighter socket
when you power it down, so I can't even leave stuff charging whilst I'm
on site visits - I'm almost tempted to search out the battery under the
boot floor and wire in an accessory socket, so I can leave phones /
laptops charging up whilst I'm on site.

I got one of the kensington batteries while I was out, and take that
around. it has proved very useful (esp. as it can charge at the same

after discovering that all of the clip-on battery cases completely
rape the GPS signal strength, which is why I wanted extra battery...

It'll recharge the iPhone 3GS from red-battery to full about three
times, *unless* you leave it connected past 100% in which case it'll
just drain out in a couple of hours, which is rather odd.
