Hmmm. Recent hub clunks aside, I found BT astoundingly simple to set up.
Just got my phone out and did stuff. Ditto with the serial port + Phone
Agent.

Getting the SE to work with the iBook has been much simpler than the
Nokia, however how much of this is down to actually having O2s correct
details does help. Came bloody handy yesterday in the middle of nowhere
trying to find someone and the destination not answering the phone,
iBook and SE on passenger seat [1] onto multimap, there 5mins later :)
On the PC it was bloody awful, driver problems, Nokia software problems,
ended up sticking with the IR connection the laptop came with but
balancing everything on your knee is a bit tricky.
[1] It was also quite impressive the other day, iBook on friends coffee
table, browsing net, how you connected? Via my mobile, few minutes
later, er where is your mobile by the way, oh its in my coat, but thats
hanging up in the next room, yep :)

Must say that Voda's site and info is quite good. Don't have to pay
extra to see an itemised bill.
But now I am starting to understand peoples' slight irritation with the
SE joystick. (Never used a recent Nokia so can't compare). It is just
too easy to flick it upwards and get that darn 'Loading' screen. Is
there any way to disable this I wonder?

Cool! You definitely didn't have to 'get your coat'!

Whats annoying me on the Z600 is the lock ups, froze it a few times
already, or got it running extremely slow, only when its having a freeze
it remembers everything you press, so Friday night I got it to go into
messages, then wrote half a text blind, then watched over the next few
minutes as it slowly wrote it out on screen, (bout 5 mins for 30-50
characters). In the end I pulled the battery, again. Yes I locked the
nokia up once or twice, but that was in a year, not a week.

well, like you I also found BT to be very simple to set up, however for
me it's not totally reliable. simple syncing is fine and I've never
tried dialling up with I supppose. what I have problems with is using it
for sms messaging. for me it's not reliable. I have no indication of
whether the sms is successful and haf the time it isn't. I never have
trouble when I send messages from the keypad of the phone itself, only
via BT.
of course, it could be an issue with the phone I supppose, anyone else
using a siemens s55? I've got about 3 months before I'm due a change,
atm thinking about the SE t610 or the nokia 6600.

Ah - I haven't used it with for dialing up yet - no laptop etc here.
I wrote a text and assumed it had gone, but later realised it was still
sitting in the phone's archive. Will look into it.

I just got a T610. Nice phone - but if you ask here you will find that
the SE vs Nokia lines are quite strictly drawn... :-)

I do use it for dialling up and no problem there (Nokia 7650 here) but i
too find annoying the lack of feedback on whether a textie was
successfully sent or not. And it doesn't succeed every time so you are
never quite sure until the other party replies or something.

ah ,yes, Bella, wanted to ask you since i'm thinking of getting either a
610 or a 630, about 1-reception, and 2-general responsiveness. The
former because i had a horrible experience with two consecutive T68i
phones, each worse than the other in that respect: in places where my
old nokia would get full signal the SE wouldn't even find its network.
And the latter is because I had a horrible experience with two
consecutive T68i... swimming in treacle would be an accurate description
of my general impression of using that phone....

Reception on its brother the Z600 [1] isn't too bad, maybe not quite as
good as a 6310, but definately alright. Not had much bother getting a
signal when I need it.
> And the latter is because I had a horrible experience with two

Mmm I'm formally from the Nokia camp, prev phone a 6310, the Z600 is
much better than a T68i, had the odd play with one since I've got the
Z600 and I couldn't live with a T68, but the Z600 interface still isn't
as fast as a nokia, so I often find myself clicking to do something as
nothings happened, then the phone suddenly the phone catches up and the
second keypress has a habit of becomming the cancel command. I've also
managed to lock it up a few more times than the Nokia resulting in
having to pull the battery a few times, and then it can be a bit sulky
about booting once you pull the battery. The other night the phone
really did slow to beyond treacle, went to read a text, the thing slowed
right down, hit reply, typed out half a text then sat for 5 mins and
watched it appear on screen, surreal, and not really what I want of my
phone.
[1] Internally pretty much identical to the T610 only clamshell.

I've had the same problem with email. Not always sure if it's got there.
Hard to tell since there's no 'sent mail' box.

I might not be the best one to ask, as I've only recently come back to
the 'hey, new phones!' thing. Reception hasn't failed me yet, but I
haven't really put it through its paces on that front. Jon B's your man.

Occasionally slightly treacly - the main annoyance is accidentally
dialing up by pushing the joystick in the wrong direction. I've had to
do a bit too much pressing 'Cancel' for my liking.

God you techies make me sick.
We spent the the weekend in Vienna with our daughters. By the end of Sunday
I'd learnt to text on our ancient Nokia (which works very well *as a
phone*). Here it is, Monday afternoon, and I've already forgotten how.
Humbug.

I'm not going to mention that repeated Cancels is a sure sign that the
SE interface is not as user-friendly as Nokia's. Oops, I just did ;)
Nice aesthetics though, the T610. Very desirable in an Ive-type way.
Depending how ancient - 5110 era? - there have actually been some very
good interface advances with regards to using mobiles as phones since
then. It's just that they're overshadowed by oooh shiny colour screen
camera fancy ringtones picture messaging animated screensavers... sorry,
got distracted there, what was I saying?

I am but an innocent lamb.
> Nice aesthetics though, the T610. Very desirable in an Ive-type way.
Funny, I was about to say something along those lines. I just took a
tour round esato.com, and SE stuff has a lot of mac-alike wallpapers in
their 'logos' section. Even a cut little OSX-alike window with the
coloured blobs at the top left. Separated at birth?
I picked the most jarring ringtone of the pre-installed ones. None of
your Ibiza Moonlight nonsense - can't hear them at all.
I've got an Apple Aqua interface theme from somewhere with more rounded
edged to the highlights etc. Still haven't found a decent 'ring' tone
though, the 'old phone' is awful, can find any variation on any song you
could ever imagine, but some normal ring tones, nada, the t68 had some
but couldn't move them from one phone to the z600 [1] I just want
something that sounds like a phone in my pocket, plus of course certain
tones are to a certain pitch to make them more audible, soon discovered
most of the polyphonic tones can't be heard from within my pocket.

the nokia 3310 you had at the expo? its not that old my dad still uses

phonebook press the side bar down you are now at messsages
now press enter and chose write message, write what you want to say
then press enter wich askes you to send? press enter again it will say
entre number just press enter and you will now be in the phone book,
chose some one to text, from list. and press enter and it will display
their number press enuter and the text will be sent,

Thanks Roger. Now I've just read it, once more I know how to do it. And it
is quite straightforward.
I'll have forgotten by this afternoon.
I guess, as I said, I just think of it as a *phone* for making very
expensive calls.

You use Address Book or your phone thingy software? I think
Address Book might not always send them - but it never goes in
the "unsent items" box. I make sure I type *0# (once I found the
# key!) at the beginning of the message which gets a return
receipt. However I think this might be an o2 only command.

Exactly - who'd ever want to use a Nokia :)

I've got something like that on mine with Voda...

Well... I'm just finding that the T610 has just a few too many ways to
dial up for my liking. Joystick down, RH top screen button, *and* the
effing button on the top right side of the phone. I've asked on
alt.cellular.ericsson, and other people say the same. There was talk of
'flashing it with straight-up Sony sofware'... I dunno.
I haven't used a Nokia since the giant brick I had ages ago, so I can't
compare.
There's been moaning on ace about Vodaphone Live! for ever,
seems, that might be part of your promble.
on my T610 cellnet dial-up menu is on the top LH, there's another
interweb access middle top, down accesses the phone book, never
used the button.
Praps you should get it reflashed with SE OEM software? There
will prolly be a s/w upgrade soon anyway, and you can fix it then
I used to use WAP for train times, but kizoom seems to have gone
downhill, so I don't use owt.
Works well with .mac mail.
fair enought i am on a low price plan as i only ring every now again and
text every few days etc...

The ringtones I always use are quite unusual. They go "ring ring".

maybe you could set it up so that it sends a BCC to a mail address of
yours... although that of course wouldn't tell you whether it has
successfully been delivered, but in case you need to verify that you did
send a particular message
Thanks - I've been doing that. But yes, it doesn't prove it's got there.
I'll keep trying...

i have a dilemma there, because i hate nokia's implementation of
bluetooth but on the other hand get along much better with nokia's user
interface than the horror which the sony-ericsson UI is (for me,
anyway)....
The implementation seems better on the symbian handsets, well it has
been so far setting up the boss's 7650 was easy enough
