You can currently get Elite, the original, on the Mac and PC for free at
<http://store.elitedangerous.com>.

I'm downloading Elite Dangerous as I type this, booted into Windows on a
2011 iMac. Should be interesting.

Cheers,
Ian

I played it - or rather saw others playing it - in 1983. It made
clever use of the BBC Micro graphics but the game play was so dull I
couldn't see the attraction.

Flying your own space ship, shooting stuff, trading across star systems
with volatile prices, running contraband, getting chased by the police,
mining, bounty hunting, scavenging, secret missions for various
factions, scooping fuel from suns and gas giants, getting lost in
witch-space, finding alien artifacts... all in something like 32k.
Stunning.

I spend an entire summer holiday playing that almost to the exclusion of
everything else, when I was about ten. It was grand. I'm aiming to build
a games PC (this 2011 iMac won't cut it!), pick up an Oculus Rift devkit
3 when that's available, get one of those fancy joystick+throttle unit
thingies, and do the same again.

Cheers - Jaimie

All I get is the buy Windows version with the following at the foot of
the page: Elite: Dangerous will be coming soon to Apple Macintosh computers.
That works!

I've been playing Elite:Dangerous for the past few weeks while in beta.
It really brings back memories of the original - although with added
2014 graphics goodness. Just wish I had more time to play it...

I've ordered it (for free, as advertised), but all I get is a screen
saying "Thank you for your order - it is now complete" or words to that
effect.

Should I be able to download it? Are they going to mail me a disk?

Thanks - that wasn't easy.

Now - I've got Elite running, but it's going to take a while to master
the instructions.

In the meantime, why did no one mention that Chuckie Egg was included?
Stuff Elite - I'm off to grab some eggs.

Death to the big bird!

Ooh, I didn't notice that! Excellent. And pun resisted.

Mind you, it doesn't play the way I expect because my hands are trained
to the Spectrum version...

I was once the National Chuckie Egg Champion, you know. According to CV&G
anyway (I think - might have been Zzap).

Thank you! I missed that that was included too. I played Chuckie Egg a
ridiculous amount back circa 1984/5. This is bliss :)

I've got the download, but it only seems to be the emulator. No game, AFAICS.

Have been playing Oolite for years - I do like it. Elite:Dangerous seems to
have a lot to offer though, although annoyingly will not have much time to
play for a while.

Whilst we're at it, look into Unknown on the App Store:

The game [Elite] *is* in the file you download and unpack. Elite.ssd.
You have to mount the DMG for the emulator to get that out properly, and
it's probably easiest to copy over the emulator from the mounted DMG
into your applications folder along with the Elite.ssd file.

And Chuckie Egg etc. are in the emulator files you get from the DMG in
there. But Elite is separately included.

Aha, I redownloaded and got a BeebEm3.dmg with a different MD5 hash,
which includes a) instructions and b) Elite.ssd as well as the emulator.

Yes, I see a Games.ssd.

Thanks.
Just downloading it.
Maybe it shortens the time until E:D is released for the Mac a bit :-)

Does anyone know if there is an alpha-test for E:D Mac like there was
for windows?
