Been using the standard aluminum usb keyboard with numeric keypad (GB
version). I notice that on the keypa (top left, immediately below the
F16 key, and to left of = key) is a button that has a rectangle
overlaid with a cross on the key-cap. No idea what it is for… or what
the symbol is meant to represent.

Anyone know?

I have the wired USB aluminum keyboard with keypad, and that key is
labeled "Clear" on mine. I don't know what it does, however. While
typing this message, it acts like a delete button. That may depend upon
the application. It doesn't do anything in TextEdit, for example.

It does depend on the app. Finale makes use of it to 'clear' some
things in the music engraving formatting.

It's the same symbol in the Keyboard Viewer and it looks to me like it
means clear the screen.

Presumably applications that are intended for use with a numeric

Under X11 it sends the Escape character.

It is the Clear key.

The symbol is similar to the one that appears on some keyboards* for the
delete / backspace key (a rectangle with triangluar left edge left side
and an X in it) and the keypad Del / forward delete key (a rectangle with
triangluar left edge right side and an X in it).

Backspace: (third symbol in list)
<http://osxdaily.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/mac-keyboard-symbols.gif>

Forward Delete:
<http://km.support.apple.com/library/APPLE/APPLECARE_ALLGEOS/HT1216/Mac%20Forward%20Delete.png>

This makes sense, since:

- left pointing rectangle = delete letters to the left
- right pointing rectangle = delete letters to the right
- non-pointing rectangle = delete everything

What the numberpad keys actually do, or do not do, often depends on what
function each application's programmer set them up to do - as someone else
posted, the Clear key clears the Calculator's screen just like pressing
the C on (most) physical calculators.

* Note: I have seen key images where the backspace and forward delete
rectangle symbols are (supposedly) swapped over - I'm not sure if that's
an error in the image description or if some makers have done an "Apple
scrolling" ;o) and intentionally swapped them.

I have been using one of these for over a year and am happy with it.
In addition to the numeric keypad it has function keys F13 thru F17,
Page Up, Page Down, Line Up, Line Down, Forward Delete, and (ta-da!)
a Clear key.

Often when I tab into a field, the whole field is highlighted,
and delete or backspace, either one, will clear it. Or just type
one character and then backspace.

I know. The thing works as advertised. I don't understand why anyone
would be disappointed with that. I did read a complaint about the
lid on the battery compartment. He's correct, that is a pain. So I
leave the lid off. It's not needed; the batteries don't fall out,
and they can't be seen.

According to the review in the UK MacFormat magazine ...

LMP Bluetooth Keypad
Verdict: A potentially useful input device, but the
build quality is poor alongside the real thing.
2 stars out of 5

Basically they didn't like the keypad being plastic while Apple's keyboard
is aluminium. They also thought the keys were a slightly different colour
to Apple's keys.

BUT that was a year ago (the April 2011 issue, which was sold in March),
so maybe the company has changed the build quality. I wouldn't count on it
though, so it's probably best to see one in the flesh before parting with
your money.

I have one of these. The plastic doesn't bother me at all. The only
problem I've had with it is it needs to be re-paired from time to time
and even when it doesn't there can be a little lag time if you haven't
used it in awhile.

I've only had to re-pair after the batteries have died. That is a
minor nuisance since it happens so seldom, but I never remember from
one time to the next how to re-pair and have to fish the instruction
booklet out of storage.

I haven't had a problem with lag time; I guess I use mine often
enough, especially its Enter key, which is convenient to press with
my thumb without removing my hand from the trackball, and the
forward Delete key.

The color and surface appearance are a near-perfect match. If you
didn't know the keypad is plastic you'd never notice it. The plastic
doesn't affect functionality.

If I squint I can maybe see a difference. That's really picky.

The local eBay clones (TradeMe being the main one) here in New Zealand are
pretty much the same. They REALLY need to clean up their acts.

For the rare times I buying anything via auction, I stick to the websites
of the real-world auction houses where there are real auctions, proper
bidding, and no greedy scalpers or other criminal scum trying to con the
buyers.

I've made many purchases via eBay with no real problems. Most have been
direct purchase instead of auctions. Items ranging in price from $10 to
about $1400. Mostly from the US and Canada but a couple from China as well.

Of late (past couple years) though, I've only made a couple e-bay buys.
Local Craigslist has been good as has been a local (French)
seller/buyer site (Lespac).

Although most people do use the services properly, there are still a large
number of scum who use it to con other people out of their money - false
sales, false bids, scalping, etc. eBay tends to be worse because it
attracts scum from all over the planet rather than the more localised
versions.

The added problem these days is that these auction websites are eing used
by people basically running stores, but not being real stores you have
little to no protection from consumer laws (e.g. returning faulty goods).

I've never seen the product, so can only go from the magazine's review
(and the other bad reviews as Sara said) and would have to take your word
for that, but even the photos on their own website show a very visible
difference in colour of the plastic vs. the aluminium.

Obviously that doesn't affect its function as a keypad, but some people do
buy Macs because they look good, and having something that looks bad would
spoil it for them. As always, best to see, and if possible, test it
yourself before parting with any money.

Another, less useful but slightly cheaper, option from a more recent issue
of the UK MacFormat magazine (Christmas 2011 issue) is the Canon X Mark I
Keypad. The magazine hasn't reviewed it yet, but shows it in the "Gadgets"
section of up-coming products.

It's not the same as the LMP Keypad. The Canon product is a solar-powered
calculator which also comes with a USB dongle which allows it to be used
as a number pad (no extra function keys). It comes in black or white, but
doesn't even remotely attempt to match the Apple keyboard. The picture
shows a "Send" button, so it may be possible to use it as a calculator,
and then send the result of the calculation through to the computer.

There are no doubt external keypads around, but few probably match the
Apple keyboard at all.

My initial response was to point out what a twat someone one has to be,
in this day and age, to come up with a post like that reads like a
10-year-old who's just watched a Benny Hill show.

Then I thought it may be more amusing to point out that men are also
supposed to also have body parts in pairs.

In short, grow a pair. Or maybe, grow up.

Oh grow up. Women all over get their boobs enhanced to various amounts
to fill out their form. Nothing wrong with it unless it is to the
degree that they can't walk straight in a strong cross wind. (Too many
women over do it, alas).

The only time men might get a ball or 2 put in is after losing them to

You made a stupid, childish remark. Acknowledge it and move on.

To be fair, it was in a comp.sys.mac* group. They can't help it.

You're a real treat.

I haven't been this charmed in weeks. Do keep it up.

"I" made a quip.

"You" made a mountain. What you believe it to be is your issue.

You need to be a little careful there - I'm not sure about these external
add-on keypads, but on Apple's wired keyboard, the Enter key on the
numberpad can have a different meaning than the Enter / Return key on the
main part of the keyboard. (For example, in some word processors, the
keypad Enter key creates a page break, while the normal Enter / Return key
creates an end of paragraph.

I wasn't calling the previous poster a coward, I was pointing out that
"pair" can refer to body parts other than breasts, and illustrating that
by pointing out that men who are deemed to be cowards are advised to
"grow a pair".

I think it may have come from Leftpondia.

In only one photo out of three, and evidently just to emphasize the
part they are selling.

Here is a photo of my keyboard with keypad extender.

http://web.me.com/john.varela/temp/DSC00476.JPG

I can't discern any noticeable color difference between the keyboard
and the keypad, or between the two sets of keys. The gadget that
holds them together does look different, but that doesn't bother me
in the least.

Not just men, we would use it quite commonly for women who have a bit of
a confidence issue.
In fact so commonly, we actually bought a friend of ours a pear tree, on
the basis it was the only way she was going to be able to grow a pear!

That looks fine to me too. I may not even have them clipped together.

I've heard it plenty (not directed at me, I hasten to add) here in the
UK as well.

I like the quote popularly attributed to Betty White, but in fact coined
by Sheng Wang apparently:
"Why do some people say, 'Grow some balls?'
Balls are weak and sensitive.
If you really wanna get tough, grow a vagina.
Those things take a pounding."
