My trusty - or so i thought - aluminium full-size Mac keyboard has just
developed a fault - it won't type the n, h, y and 6 keys, upper or
lower case. I can see these are in a column almost so are on the same
track maybe. But I can't see any way to get into the keyboard apart
from pulling off the key tabs. is it a (ÔøΩ40) throwaway now?

I can only think some liquid may have got in - a drop of coffee or a
sudden sneezeÔøΩ (it is the hayfever season).

Yes. Good luck trying to take it apart.

Or it just died. Mine did.

Is the full-sized one still wired-USB and not Bluetooth? If so then
there are no active components so the various instructions on the web
around washing in distilled water would apply regarding cleaning.

Just make sure you give it plenty of time to dry.

I've seen the dishwasher approach - suppose there's nothing to lose. Is
another way just to soak it in distilled water?

The distilled water is just to prevent limescale deposits forming as the
water dries. So you could dishwasher it first and then rinse through
with distilled water once its done. Or not bother with the distilled
water - it's not as if you are going to be washing it every week.

I wouldn't recommend using any detergent / tablets - just plain water,
hand hot.

Dishwashers default to using plain water, bastard hot (at the end of
the cycle if not before) so read the dw's instructions before trying
it.

And a week in an airing cupboard after.

As the fault appears to be in one 'leg' of the matrix, (as has been
mentioned) do we think washing is going to make any difference?

When friends son tipped a whole cup of (sweet) tea into a MacBook Pro
I stripped they keyboard down to it's component layers (inc LEDs etc)
and washed each layer (and there were a few) in a bowel of warm and
very_slightly soapy water, dried and reassembled. That worked because
the reason was to remove any deposits, not fix a broken track?

(looks upthread) Oh, you're right there. A single leg gone will almost
certainly be a track break or wire off or connector issue and won't be
interested in water.

Probably not. But it's just possible something was spilt into the
keyboard which was then tipped up - so a trickle ran down one line of keys.

If the keyboard is going to be thrown away anyway, one go at washing it
is worth the effort.

I guess that *could* happen. I was working with the "a drop of coffee
or a sudden sneeze…" volumes of 'liquid' to base my hunch though.

Oh, quite, I didn't say or even suggest you shouldn't at least give it
a go, just that from the fault description it sounded unlikely that it
would actually help. More of me being a betting man that a pessimist.

I'm pessimistic too but it went in the dishwasher last night so i'll
give it a few days and try it again but I'll lay good money it won't
work.
