When you search for a location using google.com or the google app, then tap the directions button, the start and end points are passed to the google maps app. When you select the route and only see the preview option, it's because google.com/app passed a starting set of coordinates to the maps app, so your asking google maps to provide directions between two points, not your current location to a point. Thus no turn-by-turn. Simply tap into the start field and select current location, bam."

The only suggestion that I have would be to somehow check whether or not navigation is in fact available for the given route prior to passing to the maps application, and if not then display a prompt to the user, but I do not know the android API's well enough to be of any help here.

I'm glad I found this thread which gave me the right solution.

I had created a route on my PC and sent it to my phone.

When I tried to start it, it only showed the Preview option but no Start.

To solve it, I edited the stops, added my location and moved it to the top as the starting point.

Then I clicked on "Done" and the Start button was shown.

I've read that some other people have the same issue but haven't found a solution. My GW6 tracks GPS location on auto detection and when manually setting walking/running/cycling. Watch itself shows the route on the map but Samsung Health app on phone does not. I remember it showing years back when recorded training solely with my phone. What could help? I've tried fiddling with all kinds of permissions on both watch and phone. Thanks already in advance for help.

It depends on how your vehicle is equipped. On some models, you can use Android Auto wireless without plugging in if you have a compatible phone. On other models, your device must be tethered by a USB cord to use Android Auto.

While most people keep high location accuracy disabled on their phones in order to save battery, it is a crucial location setting that allows Google Maps to pinpoint your location as accurately as possible.

This can help extend your battery life significantly, especially for devices with larger and sharper screens (that is, with more pixels). The only time you probably need your phone at 100% brightness is outdoors during midday when the sun is at its brightest. At any other time, you can reduce your phone brightness to 75% or less. You can adjust this in Android by going to Settings > Display or by swiping down from the Notifications bar. Most recent phones also have an Adaptive brightness setting, letting the device adjust automatically. Be sure to turn that on.

On Samsung phones, you can identify the power-hogging apps by going to Settings > Battery and device care > Battery > Background usage limits and then choosing which apps should be turned off. (On other Android phones, use Force Stop from Settings > Battery.)

For Google Maps, Spotify and other streaming apps, make sure to pre-download maps, playlists and podcasts over Wi-Fi before you go out. You can also turn off notifications from other apps and limit their background activity. Collectively, these changes conserve significant battery life.

If you find these battery-saving tips exhausting to implement, it may be time to sidestep the problem by upgrading to a smartphone with all-day-and-more battery life, such as the latest Galaxy S23 series. With 25W ultra-fast charging and one of our best batteries ever, the range is purpose-built for business users who need a phone that lasts as long as their work day does, and powers back up as quickly as they do.

Whether you are visiting a friend for the first time or meeting up with a family member in the city, a little navigational help might prove useful. Sometimes you want to go further than sharing a specific spot and need to share your position with someone for an extended period of time. Well, there are several easy ways to share your location using your smartphone. Here's how.

Presumably, Google had wanted to restrict Google Maps for safety reasons while Android Auto was engaged, keeping you focused on minimal information on the car display rather than distracted by a mobile interface. The tech giant my have accepted what drivers have known for some time: that passengers can use the Android Auto-connected phone during the ride to give more nuanced directions, so you can benefit from having a fully functional Google Maps app while on the road.

By comparison, Apple Maps offers slightly more information on road trips: While CarPlay is engaged and the Maps app is navigating to a destination, the connected phone will display a list of turn-by-turn directions. That's helpful, but it's still limiting, especially for passengers who want to engage Maps' additional features.

3. If Android Auto is not pre-installed on your Android device, download the app from the Google Play store. Your phone may ask you to download Android Auto-related apps, like Google Maps, or update to the newest version of the app.

Not only that, it is aware of the time of day. There are different suggestions during breakfast time than in the evening. Just scroll down and tap one of the topical icons, and your phone performs a search of businesses in your immediate area. The results come back as a regular Google search with names, addresses, and distances from your location. An example is shown here.

If your friends plan to meet up with you at a new hole-in-the-wall restaurant, they'll appreciate getting help with directions. But some spots can be tucked away at an obscure location, making them hard to find. Or maybe you're parked away from the building and can't find a suitable landmark for reference. While maps can help with navigation, sharing your real-time location is more accurate.

One of the easiest ways to share your location is to use Google Maps, which is likely your go-to app for navigation. But there are other methods, such as sending a message from apps like WhatsApp and Google Messages. It doesn't matter whether you have one of the best Samsung phones or a budget phone. In this guide, we explain how to share your location on any Android device.

A more advanced way to share your location with people is to use a common messaging app. WhatsApp allows you to share your current location and offers an option to share your live one for a while. Both options are easily accessible and work across platforms. The only drawback is that the recipient needs to install WhatsApp on their phone. Also, live location is not supported on WhatsApp Desktop, so the person you share your location with has to open it on their phone.

The simplest way to send your location is to use your traditional messaging app or Google Messages. Your location can be sent to anybody. It doesn't require specific software on their phone. The drawback is that the text message you send contains only your current location and doesn't allow the recipient to track you in real time.

As you probably already know, Google Maps needs access to the internet to download and update maps. If there's no real-time data, chances are your phone's internet is too slow, or has no connectivity.

For Google Maps to work, you'll need to have an active internet connection on your Android device. To do this, open a website on your mobile browser to check if the page loads up properly. If not, try rebooting your phone or speak to your internet provider.

Google is no exception, and it has also released a light version of the original Google Maps app, which is called Google Maps Go. With this app version, you can still find directions to places without having too many resources drained from your phone.
