My default home page on starting IE6 is supposed to be about:blank,
but it's coming up http://about:blank/ which give an 'invalid syntax'
error.

Changing the default home page in the registry to the correct
about:blank will not take.

Any ideas?

(Windows XP Home SP2)

Almost certainly spyware. Download and run Spybot Search & Destroy (from
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html) to get rid of it.

Almost? Certainly! The Russian About:blank.

Did that and downloaded and run all the other spyware tools, none of them
found anything except Spybot, who found DSO Exploit (as it always will)
which isn't a problem as IE6 has been patched to prevent that one doing
any damage.

As the page isn't actually being hijacked, I presume my efforts to remove
this scum have been only partly successful and it has left the registry
change programme in situ which inserts only the http:// bit and the
about:blank is being added to this legitimately by IE6.

I have found a VB script which I can use to direct the start page to the
local hard disc. If I direct it to a blank page on the HD the effect will
be the same as getting rid of the thing. Annoying though.

Thanks for the input.

If Spybot is up-to-date it shouldn't find DSO Exploit unless it's
actually present. If you Google DSO Exploit there are several pages
detailing how to remove remaining traces.

It is up-to-date, the fault is with IE6 which, although patched
to plug this DSO hole, doesn't do anything to get rid of it.

It can do no harm even left on the system.
