Hi all,

I have a Iomega Tape250 tape drive which I would like to use with Win95. The
software supplied with it is only Win 3.1 and DOS, however.

The tape drive is QIC-80 standard. Does Win 95 come with built-in support for
this format in the Backup tools, or do I have to buy some 3rd party win95
software?

Thanks,

John.

John,

The software supplied with my Iomega Tape250 runs under Win95 (all be
it with a very small and strange font). I am using Centre Point
Backup.

Iomega has a Win95 tape-drive backup program that I have been using with
an Iomega 250 tape drive. The software was written by Arcada and works
quite well. I have restored my hard drive from the tape backup using
this software without any major problems.

I am using version 5.0 of the Iomega backup software. I have been told
on another newsgroup that there is a version 5.1 (and maybe 5.2).
Unfortunately, this software is no longer on the Iomega web site, and
Iomega does not respond to e-mail concerning the status of this
software.

I previously used the backup program that came with Win95. However,
there were some problems with this software and many users reported an
inability to restore from a tape drive when using this software. There
is an updated version of this software on the Microsoft web site; it may
be more reliable.

Best Wishes

Windows 95 backup works fine with this drive, in fact it's the only
software I've ever managed to get to work with my Iomega Tape 250. All
the DOS packages (QBACKUP, CPBACKUP, TAPEBACK, etc) I ever tried
suffered from format failures, bad compares and generally failed to
work properly. As soon as I started using Windows 95 backup it worked
*perfectly* for the first time!

It even reads/writes 350Mb (DC2120XL) cartridges although it will
*not* format DC2120XL tapes so you have to buy preformatted ones...

Remember- W3.x software does not support long filenames and therefore
should not be used. The software with W95 works fine (there is also an
update for it at MS) as does the HP software (available FOC from HP's
site).

The qbackup software works fine in dos mode, but you need the Ditto
Tools software for win95.

I got mine by bitching at the supplier who sold me the drive.

Try a visit to the iomega web site.

Iomega does have software for that drive for win95 but I have found that usinf
the lfnbk utility that is on the win95 allows me to use the Arcada DOS 5.0
backup software from a DOS session and works very well. Just run the utility
before your backup and the again after to reset the file names. There are a
few tricks to this but there is documentation on the cd rom. Aloha from maui

John,

I had the same problem when I switched to Win95. I have had good success
using the Win95 backup with my Conner 200/400 tape drive. However Win95
backup wont use QIC-80 wide tapes, (I had previously used a 200/400
QIC-80 tape and the Win95 backup software wont recognize it), I had to
buy 125/250 tape and now all is well.

Hi all,

I have a keen interest in the subject as a whole.

A. Using a Trakker 350, but I've found it works with all QIC systems
my current strategy is as follows:
1. Use DOSLFNBK by D.J. Murdoch, which makes a database of the long
file names.
2. Make Backups using Colorado Backup Windows 3.X
3. Partial restores with CBW3.X
4. Total restores to blank (formatted) HD of CBW backups with CB for
DOS
5. Follow-up 3. and 4. with DOSLFNBK to restore the long file names.

B. Both Colorado and MS advise the following strategy.
1. Backup with the W95 software
Restore to blank HD as follows
2. Install a minimum W95
3. Install the backup program
4. Restore files
5. Restart your system

My findings are:

1A. Strategy A works faultless over and over for partial and total
restores.

1B. As for strategy B, partial restores work OK as long as I stay out
of the Windows and Program Files directory, but so far I have not
succeeded to accomplish a faultless total to blank HD restore.
MSBackup reported 779 errors when I tried a total restore (the backup
reported faultless) with it yesterday using the upgrade I downloaded
an hour earlier from the microsoft site and off course I got a total
disaster on restart. Couldn't read the error log because it was to
large for Notepad and Wordpad was ruined.
CBW for W95 has some similiar problems.

2A. With the W3.X/DOS software and my system I achieve backup speeds
of over 9Mb/min and restore speeds in the 8Mb/min bracket. Once you
know how, it works fast (even better if you make use batchfiles). Even
a total restore to blank HD is fast because you only need to install a
minimum DOS and the DOS backup software.

2B. Both W95 programs do 4-4,5 Mb/min on backup and a low 3,5 Mb/min
on restore. Imagine the time it take to first install a minimum DOS,
the CD-ROM driver etc., installing W 95 minimum, the Backup program
(admitted, the only difference with A is installing W95 but you know
what that takes), restoring for hours at that slow speed and finding
it doesn't work.

Well, I stopped believing fairy tales, but I remember some people
telling me 32-bit would work faster than 16-bit.
But I don't want to start another W95 is no good discussion. I just
want to know: Am I doing something wrong? Why do other people
obviously don't have this problem? Have others really tried to MS
procedure for total restores to HD? What have you found?

FYI: I load Norton AV, Navigator, Powertoys, MSOffice all the time,
run a Ethernet Network and cleared off my desktop the recycle bin and
other unwanted icons.

Yes, the Win95 backup programme will work fine with an Iomega 250 QIC
drive.
It's well worth downloading the updated version of Backup from Microsoft's
web site.

hi all,
Does anyone know the best way to backup win95 program files that is
reliable. I have an iOmega 800 tape backup and cannot find a reliable way
of backing up the win95 program files after installation and configuration.
If anyone is an expert, any information will be appreciated.

I bought an DC2120-EX 800 meg tape from Verbatim, and it included
ARCADA 95 software, which runs perfectly. Plus you get a big tape. :-)
