Registry Problem Windows XP Home (SP2)

XP on boot complains that it cannot find a file called '?????' called up
by the registry to be run at startup.

I cannot find any reference to '?????' in the registry and registry
maintenance tools do not address the problem.

Anyone any idea where in the registry this rather suspicious entry
may be hiding?

PS the actual filename consists of five open squares characters,
possibly character number 144, which my newsreader won't let me
insert in this post.
