I subscribe to a very low traffic regional newsgroup and I'd like to know
more about an obscene message recently posted there and the consequences of
replying to it.

1.
<extract from header>

From: Theresa Milligan <ancient...@0.0.0.0.co.uk>

</extract from header>

Does the use of an octet in the fake email address signify anything?

2.
<extract from header>

Followup-To: uk.local.essx

</extract from header>

No such newsgoup, but a reply (to group) wasn't rejected by the reliable
Berlin news-server - does this signify anything?

Thanks if anyone can comment on this.

This is probably an nntp://uk.net type of question. Windows cannot be
considered the catalyst for spam, but some might argue that the contrary is
true. Maybe the Web servers which were susceptible to this junk and routed
the message ran Windows. Who knows...

I wasn't clear and also quite ambiguous. I can see it now that you mentioned
it. By "the contrary" I meant to say that Windows might not be (passively)
responsible for spam.

There are many exploits which can be attributed to faulty hardware or
software. For example, certain blogging software encouraged comment spam.
Buggy implementations of XML-RPC encouraged denial of service (DoS) attacks
on Web servers and certain news readers allow the user to crosspost to an
absurd number of newsgroups.

What has anything got to do with anything when the message is marked OT? :-)

Why not throw the message through spamcop and see where it came from,
then google for the ISP/company that it was sent through/from?

Thanks. I could argue the subject is OS related but, as I can't be arsed, I
delberately marked it OT.

The octet I refered to (0.0.0.0) is the same as that which prefaces a
listening port in my OS (Win2k) and, as the author is also fooling a
reliable newsfeed, I wondered if this didn't indicate an exploit somewhere,
somehow.

Of course, I could be completely wrong but any polite observations are
welcome.

I don't need convincing, really.

You don't recognise the octets?

I warned that the message body was obscene - so why did you have to read it?

Newbie.
