Having narrowly avoided yet another idiot coming straight out of a blind side
turning across my path on a busy main road, I've decided I need to get one of
these before I have a major insurance hassle.

Does anyone know of a unit that records in a linux friendly format, and on
equally friendly media?

Ideally I'd like one of the very small ones that fit behind the rear view
mirror. GPS time and position would also be nice but not essential.

Are there any that don't 'work with Linux'? I've had a 'Nextbase' 402G
from Halfords for about two years and the video clips transfer to my
Linux computer just fine using the USB cable or the little memory card.
They are .MOV files which Mplayer handles perfectly. The device could
record sound as well but I have that turned off so I don't know if that
works but I would expect it to.

The GPS data (time speed and location) are recorded continuously and
show at the bottom of the picture.

I did have to set the device to use less than it's maximum resolution as
my 2004 vintage laptop couldn't handle it.

The rubber sucker does fall off the windscreen sometimes, usually while
the car is parked in direct sunshine.

Thanks for the info. never having sight of one of these I thought it advisable
to find out the score first.

I've been using a transcend drivepro 200 for the last couple of years. It's their basic model without GPS but with sound. I think they sell for about £80. Video quality is excellent. I ditched the 16GB microsd it comes with and bought a 32GB. That gives me about 4 hours of recording before it overwrites older video. I've pulled the video off and edited with kdenlive and played with VLC. Of course since I've had it there has not been a single thing worth posting on you tube !
