I've been trying to find out if there will be any problems installing
Debian (or Ubuntu) on this laptop:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/133383

I couldn't find any information on www.linux-laptop.net/ and laptop
hardware is a bit of a mystery to me. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Paul

I have heard that the SiS graphics can give people problems. Just looking at
the ebuyer website I see there is also a HP 6720s laptop
(http://www.ebuyer.com/product/136220) for the same money and that has
Intel 965 graphics which AIUI work well except for 3D stuff like Compiz
Fusion (I have Intel 915 graphics on this Dell laptop and would go for
Intel or Nvidia for graphics in a laptop if I could). It also has a Intel
Wireless which ought to work straight out of the box and a bigger battery
than the Fujitsu. The hard drive is smaller at 80Gb but USB disks are cheap
enough these days that backing up data to leave the laptop's own drive
freed up is easy and 80Gb is big enough unless you do a lot of photos or
video. Certainly of the two I'd look at the HP.

I'm using an Esystem EI-3103 which runs most Linux OK except Ubuntu
refuses to connect to the net via wi-fi, It shows on the tool bar as
there trys to connect but refuses, its an RT61 chipset hopefully yours is
not that chipset it would also not roam as I'm about 10ft away from a BT
Openzone site. (its actuall in my house). I have an Acer laptop that WILL
roam but needs to have the windbolws driver wrapped to work.

Be careful which kernel it uses too as this will make a difference to
getting a laptop running.

Its a shame that you can't go into a computer shop with a live distro and
test laptops out. But oh no "were not allowed to do that as it could
introduce a virus to the system sir"

You may be lucky enough just to alter modprobe.preload or even to have it
run out of the box.

Specs of the Laptop are good. Vista would *JUST* about run.

Good luck with the laptop hunting.

I was looking at one of those yesterday for my niece. Tescos are selling
them for the same price. I don't know anything about the longevity of
Fujitsus, but it seems like a very good laptop for the price. And it's
got a matt screen - which is a definite bonus in a consumer laptop
nowadays, as they all seem to have the eye-damaging shiny ones. The only
downside of it is the very low battery life - but for 300 quid, that's
not bad really.

I've been using Linux on laptops for 13 years now, and i know from
experience that you can get almost everything to work on pretty much all
laptops - eventually. Chances are, you won't have much trouble with it.
If i was looking for a cheap laptop to run Linux on, i'd buy one of these.

I can't comment on your chances of a trouble-free install of Debian
though, as i haven't used it for many years.

As with any Windows based box (laptops included) if it uses a winmodem type
device and this laptop has an inbuilt one you may have a problem getting it to
work. You will have to check out the various hardware compat sites to see if
this specific element is supported. As far as the rest is concerned it should
work using the latest versions of a good distro but the best advise I can give
you is to take along a couple of distros that are 'Live' versions and try it
on the laptop in a store.

If you have a problem with a sales rep regarding 'risk of damage to computer
installing a strange O/' point out that it only install to Ram not to disk.
This will show you if all the basics work.

Vince

My main laptop is a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo. It currently runs Kubuntu but
before that ran Debian, and did so for about three years without problems.
The only irritation is that I've never got the built in (Intel) WiFi to
work - it works fine if I plug a 3com WiFi card into the People Can't
Memorise Computer Industry Acronyms slot.
