Since my ISP is stopping its usenet feed I've registered with Eternal
September. ngs download happily but if I try to post to this group it
tells me I haven't permission. I've sent them a 'Contact us' message but
have no reply yet.

Any ideas?

Ask on the support newsgroup "e-s.support" - unless you can't post to
that too. It doesn't require a login, so if you can post to that, it's
probably an authentication issue. If not, there is something odd going
on. Ray Banana (the Eternal-September admin) is active in that group, so
it's probably a better bet than the "Contact Us" messages.

That seemed to work. I had fun getting icedove to ask me for a password
without which you can't subscribe to anything. Just to keep me off the
street I've now had to set up icedove again from scratch (the
'icedove/thunderbird glitch' thread applies) which has got email working
but I've and so far have failed to get asked for a password for e-s. So
I have this (old) setup where e-s works but email doesn't and the new
setup where email works and e-s doesn't.

Dunno. I press [Send] and get a popup box saying I don't have permission.

Yes, getting it to ask for a password is a problem but unless it has one
you can't subscribe to ucol so I guess it's doing that anyway to get the
downloads.

User error. I'd typed in the server wrong. Now subscribed on the new
setup. Progress.

Try Pan - I dumped thunderbird years ago when it was really flakey, i.e.
periodically destroying itself and needing the files to be deleted and
rebuilt from scratch, moved to Pan and have never seen a need to use
anything else since then. In addition it has a better killfile subsystem.

I used to use pan but the attraction of having one thing for both is
great. And after much blundering about I think I've cracked it. Crucial
moves seem to have been a) typing the name of the news server right, b)
setting it up with 'Always request authentication' on.

How about one thinks about this reply.

Lets try again.

Are you using icedove?

Ben a Claws Mail user for years. Found it very reliable, although some of the
ways you make settings are a bit odd until you get used to them.

Yes, sorry, I thought I'd said that but rereading I find that I didn't.
However it's come good now.
