Do you need to change the keyboard layout? I use Debian here, and
inserting characters not on the keyboard is usually quite simple: I type
<AltGr><char><char> and the character I want appears. The <char><char> to
use is generally easy to remember or guess. For example, L- gives the
pound sign, e= the euro sign and Pt still gives the pesetas sign. <AltGr>
is immediately to the right of the space bar.
Examples, with apologies if your newsreader doesn't render UTF-8:
L- £ e= € Pt ₧ w^ ŵ o" ö o/ ø ae æ l/ ł D- Đ th þ n~ ñ
Most of the above were guessed, rather than remembered.
