I have four HP Laserjet cartridges, that need to be recycled, but have
no boxes, they came from a disused printer. I was able to download four
return labels from HP, but I still have no boxes. These are quite
complicated things that are obviously designed to protect the cartridges
from damage.
The HP recycle website offers no boxes to individual customers, only
new cartridges or toner refill kits.
If you pretend to be a company, then you can get a large box,
flat-packed, (shipped from the EU), but it still needs individual boxes
to be placed inside it. It can take seven boxed cartridges, I have four
unboxed cartridges. I assumed that they should be packed so that they
cannot be damaged.
I called HP, who said, basically, "Yes, that's right. You need to pack
them yourself into the big box, and then call for that to be
collected. We don't send out empty boxes for recycling old cartridges".

This basically says to me that they don't care if the returned
cartridges are damaged or not, I might as well just throw them
randomly into the big box and send it off to them. I will wait until my
current black cartridge is replaced, then add that (boxed!) before
sending them away.

And I had asked them three times, using their web contact form,
about empty cartridges being sent out. The second time, they said that
they had no record of the first time, but would forward the request to
the relevant department, which never responded, and the third one was
also ignored.

Luckily, the printer involved has performed flawlessly.

What you are supposed to do is buy a new cartridge, and use the
cardboard box that the new cart came in to return the old used one with
and stick the free address label that HP gave you.....

simples.... :-D

That is fine if you are replacing a cartridge in a printer you are
using, but I have spare cartridges, over and above those that I have in
use. So if I order a new cartridge, and remove it from its box, and
send an old one back in that, I now have a new cartridge knocking about
but not protected by its box.

In which case, wait until you next get a delivery of something else and
reuse the box.

Or your local council recycling centre may well take them (mine has a
specific bin for them).

I was hoping for empty versions of the standard box they send a new one
out inside of. It is very much designed with preventing damage in mind.
But since HP don't appear to be worried, then neither will I be.
Plastic bags and foam peanuts will do. I also have a sack of shredded
paper....

I like the idea of the recycling centre. Mine is a good trek away, but
I go there every couple of months, so I'll see what their website says.
Thanks for that.
