I wonder if this will work with $USERNAME
http://en.kioskea.net/faq/1860-displaying-your-name-on-the-taskbar-near-the-clock
(No Windows machine to try it on.)

The "User's Files" icon actually displays the username as part of its title,
but if you want more info there's MS Sysinternal's BgInfo:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897557. I think we use a
customised version for servers at work.

Looks like my full stop on the end broke it. Try
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897557 instead

I just set a different wallpaper for each desktop -- in my case there
are usually only two users (me and an admin account) so I set the normal
user's desktop to a soothing pale blue colour and the admin's to a
frightening bright red.

That's a trick I picked up from an early SuSE Linux distro, designed to
warn people not to run routinely as root -- it works in other OSes too.

You could create a bitmap containing the user's name and tile it all
over the desktop ...

Cheers,
Daniel.
