Just got my computer back but now when I go into device manager there
are a load of USB1 ports listed but only 1 USB2.0... its the ICH7 chipset.

According to the motherboard specs there are USB2.0/1.1 ports on the
back and and front.

I only noticed because I plugged a hi speed device into my external hub
and the message came up saying you can get a faster connection if put
into a USB2.0 port.

Am I just confused and the ports were always USB1.1 or has something
changed...

Have you tried resetting the computer, and trying plugging things in in a
different order. I know I`ve got one machine that gets upset if things
aren`t plugged in in a particular way.

In the device manager I have four USB host controllers and one USB2
enhanced host controller... I do not remember having this problem
before. They should all be enhanced host controllers should they not?

I have installed the latest chipset drivers but to no avail, does the
ICH7 chipset only support one USB2 enhanced host controller. According
to the motherboard specs they are all USB2.0/1.1 ports.

Motherboard is Eg41MF-S2H if you want to look it up.

I get bored enough looking up my own hardware troubles :-) I`m just keeping
an eye out for a cheap as chips PCI-express graphics card for my server :-)

Delete all USB hubs and ports in Device Manager and reboot. Windows
will uato-redetect and re-install correct drivers. That'll usually fix 'it.
Those problems are one reason I hate USB. The other is the slow
speed - did a real world comparison using a 1TB WD MyBook with
both USB2 and e-Sata ports. About 5GB of mixed files, a few around
1-500MB, the rest thousands of small .txt and .doc files etc.
Copying over USB2 took 75 minutes.
Copying same files over e-SATA took 9 minutes.
Those numbers don't add-up by simply comparing 400Mbps (USB2)
and 1500Mbps (SATA1). USB overheads must be huuuge.

You also should read the following article and use it so that 'display
hidden devices' displays all devices:

I think it's more instructive just opening up device manager, selecting
'view devices by connection' from the menu, then repeatedly expanding
the major branch related to the PC/chipset/data bus (PCI?) along the
whole hierarchy of USB controllers, hubs and devices.

When ye get to a 'USB Root' or 'USB Generic' Hub, just right click it
and look at the properties for the number of ports supported.

My Dell Dimension 3100 PC here shows via device manager
6 USB1 controllers each with a USB root hub, single port.
1 USB2 controller with a USB root hub, six ports.

The six physical ports on the case auto switch between using either the
USB1 or USB2 controller hardware depending on the needs of the attached
device.

Now looking at a Lenovo Thinkpad R61 shows via device manager
6 USB1 controllers each with a USB root hub, two ports.
2 USB2 controllers USB root hub, six ports on one, four on the other.

On this R61 there are three physical USB 2.0 ports and one internal USB
1.0 device (fingerprint reader).

On the accessory (which I don't have, wish I was rich) 'ThinkPad
Advanced Dock' there are five USB 2.0 ports, and two internal USB 2.0
devices (ExpressCard slot (these have a USB 2.0 connection to it), Media
card reader (*I think that's on the USB bus*))

So that makes ten physical ports cabable of being either USB 1.0/2.0
plus two ports that are only USB 1.0.

Well one of these USB 1.0 will do for the fingerprint reader, but use of
the other is a mystery.

But, anyway - it's not too hard getting the info out and finding out
what's what.... :-)

This is normal. One USB2.0 enhanced host controller (EHCI) generally
handles all the ports, while the older USB1.1 UHCI or OHCI only handle
two ports each. For an ICH7 you'll see one enhanced host controller and
four universal host controllers in device manager.

If you only get the speed warning when you plug devices into the
external hub, it's the hub that doesn't support USB2.0 high speed.
