I've got four hard drives from an old PC that I want to reuse. I
would like to use at least one of them as a portable external storage
device.

Surprisingly, after fairly extensive searching I have only been able
to identify one source for such a kit, namely the H45 Quick Drive
product from H45 Technology Inc. in California, USA, price about
$70.00.

Has anyone else used this product, and, if so, what has been their
experience with it? Or will I be the first?

I bought them from Simply Computers a few years back. They use Shuttle
Technologies parallel/IDE interfaces. They work with disks up to 8.4Gb.
They were slow but reasonably reliable. I don't think there are any XP
drivers for them.

I have a Quick Drive Pro, it is made by Datawise. It's a bit battered, I
bought it second hand and the case isn't that sturdy so it is showing signs
of wear now. It'll take any size disk AFAIK, the basic Quick Drive only goes
up to about 8gb. I use it with a parallel cable (on an NT machine) and USB
on other machines. Firewire and PC Cards are also available. I've used it
with 3.25" and 2.5" drives (with an adapter). Never had any problems with
it. The caddies can be bought in the UK for around £50, additional cables
are expensive. They might be DASH cables, but I am not sure.

A quick search turns up these vendors

www.simply.co.uk list a couple of enclosures

these are firewire, but one takes 2 drives

I don't vouch for any of them, they just turned up in google, I am sure
there are others too.
