Advice please on a suitable crimping tool and type of crimps I need for use on
wires from base unit's front panel to motherboard. Also where to buy these
items. The connectors currently end up in one block which I need to cut off and
crimp on individual connectors. TIA, Dan

No chance you can just cut the existing block up? I've often cut one
connector from a 3 pin plug to make it into a two pin one. Dunno if you can
do it with what you've got though.

If you need to purchase the kit, it'll be way more than the cost of a
new case.

I'd suggest cannibalising some old case if you have one, reuse the
wires.

I actually have several to do, so I do need the kit -- unless the cost is too
much, in which case I may have to use SteveH's suggestion to cut the existing
block up. What sort of cost are involved in buying the crimper and crimps, and
what to use if the block is to be cut up successfully? Dan

There not crimped. They on a brass/gold plated contact the push's in to the
block and is then held in by a spring part of the connector FrontXpanal had
a diagram of how to change on there web site http://www.frontx.com/ Look for
installing internal ports. I think they recommend a small scalpel blade for
obvious reasons I don't Bit a Darning needle is good

This is just one source:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=44096&&source=14&doy=9m4

There are many others but you'll have to check what sizes of connectors you
need. There's plenty of scope for browsing at Maplins and most car accessory
shops stock them.

Why? They're only a press fit. You can press down on the little bit on
the pin that holds them in place, take them out and refit them.

Are people really so fucking incapable nowadays?

No you don't.

Look at the plug. On one side you'll be able to see a bit of the pin.
If you press down on that, you can withdraw the pin from the plastic
block and fit it in the hole you need.

I unclip the contacts from the block then wrap a small amount of electrical
tape around them. They can then be individually plugged into any pin you
wish nice and snugly.

The message <YfGdnZwHdemZ3KXZ...@pipex.net>
from D...@onetwo.com (Danny) contains these words:

Why don't you simply release the contacts out of that large block and
insert them into suitable 2 or 3 pin blocks? You should be able to
canabalise suitable connector blocks from your scrap parts bin or get
hold of some if you don't enjoy such a luxury (You'll be able to
practice your "extraction" technique with a small clothes pin before
having a go with the big block :-).

Many thanks for suggestions, guys. Didn't realise it was possible to just pull
them individually out of the block. Thanks also for the Maplin link should I
need it. Dan
