I've got a Dell Latitude D830 laptop here running Vista Business.
For the past week or so , it's started running like a dog. The system
process varies between 50 and 90% CPU time even when the machine is idle.
Sometimes it will drop back to normal levels of it's own accord , other
times a reboot will clear it (but not always).
It also sometimes fails to go into hibernation correctly. I've seen mention
of ACPI issues causing these symptoms , but no solutions.
Before I wipe it and re-install , does anyone have any helpful [1]
suggesions on how to cure the problem.

[1] You needn't waste your time suggesting that I install Linux as this is a
work PC and needs to be running Windows [2]
[2] However I realise this won't stop you.

I don't know if this will cure it but you could try rebuilding the
search index (if you're using it)? The index sometimes gets corrupted
and can cause symptoms similar to the ones you've described. You could
just stop the search service and see if anything improves before rebuilding.

What about XP? Sorry :-)

Driver/kernel bug anyway, possibly provoked by a hardware fault. Get
Process Explorer, select properties of the system process, select the
threads tab and find which thread is using the CPU. Should give you a
much better idea of what's causing the problem.

Upgrade to Windows XP .. or is that unacceptable as well?

You need to get MUCH more detailed than 'the system process' .. there
are god knows how many threads and services lurking in there.
