I want to share and tell you of my experience of ADSL self install, it may
help others. Basically I choose PLUSNET for my ISP as at £22.99 per month
for an always on ADSL connection they are cheaper than BT OPENWORLD at
£29.99. You pay £58.75 for BT to activate your existing line, you then need
to purchase an ADSL modem and line splitters/micro filters for each phone in
your house ( around £8 each ). The line degrades slightly on the phone side
so you need these microfilters, you can use the phone and internet at the
same time as they are now completely separate. ADSL modems start from
around £50 for internal PCI types and from about £85 for USB, I have a
Fujitsu USB model. This was easy to set up as I only needed to put in my
user name and password and away I went, the software supplied with the modem
did every thing else. ADSL modems are not currently NOT available from many
retail stores and PC world look slightly blank faced at you if you ask them
about ADSL equipment. So you will have to buy online unless you use BT
openworld whom will sell you an Alcatel USB modem and microfilter for £80
but only if you buy the service from them at the £29.99 a month. With
receive a rate of 576kbps and send rate of 288kbps it is what the internet
should be, a real pleasure to have pages appear almost instantly, video is
smooth to watch and a 2mb file download is about 30 seconds. We did have
some problems with BT getting the line activated at first but after 2 weeks
it was settled and a connection date set. When you look at the cost of a
normal connection with 24/7 access then this has got to be worth the extra.

I have broadband with Telewest in Liverpool, and as I work in Harrogate,
just got ADSL installed there. ( I commute to and from every 4 days or so)

Pipex are doing a similar offer £23.44 /month., £8.50 for the Microfilters
and it's currently free to have the Line set up by the engineer.

Chris,

There is some interesting info on your site that will appeal to newbies.

However, you really need to do something about your layout. Trying to
read large yellow text agains photo backgrounds might be great if you've
had a happy cigarette, but otherwise not.

Chris, does this mean that you don't have to pay your BT phone line rental
anymore? Thanks.

No - you still have to pay line rental, because you're still using the
line

But if you had two lines, one for the computer and one for the phone,
you could terminate one of them since the phone and computer will
work simultaneously on the one line, thus saving the rental on the
second line.

Aha. Thats the idea I was getting from reading about this. Can you keep
your existing number? can you still use prefixes such as OneTel and other
companies?

Seems like a good deal if you bring your line rental in consideration. I
mean, BT anytime is now going to be £19.99. Monthly line rental is around
£10. Which means your at the £29.99 mark anyway!

But hang on! You'll still have to pay the £10 a month line rental to BT
AND the £23 to £30 to the ISP whose ADSL product you have signed
up for.

So the difference is (say) £23 ADSL less £20 Anytime = £3 a month more.
You continue to pay BT the line rental of £10 making £33 to £40 a month.

[lots snipped]

I'm sure many people will find that useful. Anyone thinking of going
broadband might also want to consider Pipex; they're about the same
monthly price as Plusnet but installation is free for the first 30,000
subscribers, saving £60ish.

Yes, there is no physical change to your existing line, they just pipe
ADSL down the same wire.

All services will work as they already have. Only exception I'm aware
of is some alarm systems which use the phone line to contact a
response centre in case of break-on, as the off-band signalling use by
ADSL *might* interfere with it's operation.

You still have the line and therefore still have to pay the rental.
ADSL is an *additional* service over the same line, so you'll only say
Ł10 in line rental if you currently have a second line for modem use,
which you'd be able to terminate were you do go to ADSL.

I went ADSL when it was still about Ł50 a month and thought it was
good value for money then, despite being Ł10 more than the ISDN
service I had before. Now the price has dropped I'm almost Ł20 a
month better off (difference in rental + surftime) for using a
*vastly* superior service! Stop thinking about it and do it!! ;-)
