It looks like ddrescue-gui is now included in the list of X Programs on
the current PartedMagic download. My version of PartedMagic dates from
2013 and is lacking this program option - I just checked.
Having such utilities on a rescue/live CD distro makes a lot of sense
over having to download and install them to an installed distro. ddrescue
is not something you'd want to use in anger on a work-a-day desktop
machine if you can help it.
Using ddrescue instead of something like Clonezilla, otoh, is a
different proposition. Cloning from one good drive to a larger good drive
with very little risk of the job time going from a few hours to a few
days is one thing but when dealing with cloning a failing drive, I'd
rather use a Live CD boot session like PartedMagic on an al-fresco setup
laid out on the workbench than my regular desktop PC for just such
protracted recovery exercises and this is just the situation that calls
for the use of a live distro such as PartedMagic or UBCD.
The latest version of PartedMagic claims to have ddrescue-gui but is no
longer freeware and is only available via a paywalled web site. A one off
copy of the current version now costs $9.00 which is chicken feed
compared to most seriously limited software toolsets costing as much or
even more.
I checked out the latest UBCD to see whether their version of PartedMagic
now included DDRescue-GUI but it doesn't. As a matter of fact, it's a
version that's only younger than my stand-alone version by about 6 weeks
(Ver 2013_08_01 versus 2013_06_15).
You just might find DDRescue-GUI on the latest Knoppix Live CD/DVD after
downloading the iso, burning it to disk (or flash memory device) and
booting it. I couldn't track down any listings of what apps were included
so I'm afraid to say it's a case of "Suck it and see!".
