I am getting cheesed off with Google offering to carry out a "more local"
search for me, especially as it now puts up a modal yes/no dialog so I
can't do anything until I dismiss it.

Apparently if I use Google's browser (? Chrome) there is an option to turn
it off but I can't find that in Brave.

Any suggestions for an effective search engine that doesn't try to take
over my life please?

While I am at it is Brave still a sensible browser to use? I like its
built in ad blocker.

I've been using https://duckduckgo.com for years as I'm really not keen
on Googles search algorithm or their ethics.

The lite version, https://lite.duckduckgo.com , seems to work well with
the lynx CLI web browser, and probably others.

I tried DuckDuckGo, but didn't like it.

I'd suggest https://www.startpage.com/ which uses Google's database but
without all the Google spying and cross-promotion. It's even better if
you're adblocking as you lose the sponsored search results.

Brave's adblocking is good, otherwise try uBlock Origin.

Google are engaging shady anti-adblocking antics in Chrome/ium at the
moment, so I'd also suggest uBO+Firefox.

I run my own Pi Hole to filter out much of Google's tracking crap. over
66% of all DNS requests get dropped.

I also run firefox, chrome and Edge with all five of the following add
ons installed in each browser:

DuckDuckGo Privacy essentials
Ghostery
UBlock Origin
Disconnect
EFF Privacy badger

If a site starts breaking, then I rtun Sandbox and run Edge in that.
