Win7 x86.

Installed a D-Link DWA-140 USB wireless adapter, which during driver
install installed something called "ANOD Network Security Filter driver"
which appears in the list of adapter properties. It is installed even
if I install the driver alone and don't run the noddy point-n-drool
setup from the driver CD.

Googling hasn't helped me find out what this is, though the results seem
to indicate it's related to D-Link in some way, and disabling it in the
adapter properties seems to have no ill-effects. Given that D-Link
doesn't exactly have a stellar reputation for the privacy of its
customers, I'm suspicious of this driver shim and have uninstalled it.

The file installed along with the D-Link drivers is anodlwfx.sys, there
seems to be a valid M$ NDIS filter driver called anodlwf.sys which is
present in c:\windows\system32\drivers\. It's findable in the registry
but is under a "Legacy" sub-tree.

Note the extra 'x' on the end of the one installed by D-Link.

Any thoughts? Am I being paranoid?

I think you are being paranoid. the anodlwfx.sys file is in common usage
and it is probably just another version of anodlwf.sys. There are no
reports of this file (in its original form) being cause for concern.

It appears to be some kind of packet filter that is incorporated into the
D-Link driver set. You won't notice any immediate effects from disabling
it - but if doing that results in your network being less well defended
then there might be problems later on.
