I'm looking for a new antivirus + firewall, I've been using Norton until now
but thought I'd try something new. Any recommendations?

I've had endless probs with Norton. Try the freebie Zone Alarm - effective
and no vices.

I have just done precisely that. I chose AVG and am very happy with it.
Norton did not give up without a struggle and caused all sorts of
problems as it did not uninstall cleanly.

Technical support at AVG were superb in helping to track down the
problems, typically replying within an hour each time. Try that with
Symantec. That sort of service, in itself, makes AVG worth a consideration.

I read in a recent review of antivirus software that these days there is
very little difference (but still enough to distinguish one from another)
between them as far as effectiveness in detection and eradication of viruses
are concerned, if the software is updated ( the virus definitions) often.
Most of them deal with adware as well (not firewall though), so they should
be more correctly be called anti-malware programmes. The main difference is
in how effective they each remove and repair the system, and how user
friendly they can be (the ergonomics).

The computing faculty of the University of Magdeburg runs an annual
comparison between the various anti-malware. This, to me, is the only way
to uncover the best of the lot. For 2005, I read from a post in another
newsgroup, the contest was won by AntiVir from H-bedv.
http://www.hbedv.com/en/

I am still in the process of evaluating the free PersonalEdition. One thing
which was immediately apparent was that the scan was very fast: it took 1 hr
to complete the scan of my entire HD instead of 1½ with Grisoft AVG.

For adware, spyware, and others that make up what are traditionally called
malware, another comparative review (Personal Computer World, November,
2005), which included Ad-Aware and Spybot in the test, recommended
Microsoft's Antispyware (Beta) in tandem with PCTools' Spyware Doctor.

Oh I dunno if you should be so harsh on Symantec, every problem I've had
with their software has been answered almost immediately by their FAQ on
their site. But then looking at it another way, it must have happened to
an awful lot of people to be an FAQ :-)

I use Avast! for AV and a h/w firewall (Draytek Vigor 2600i)

A properly configured hardware one should do the job.

Just wait till you have a problem that is not in the FAQ. A two or three
day wait doesn't come close to the response time provided by AVG.

Won't happen to me, I dumped them ages ago and use Avast! :-)

Ugh - I've had endless problems with Zone Alarm on several machines
and I won't have it installed on any machine I have control over.

I have NAV on all my machines and have never yet had a problem!

I don't use a software firewall at all - I let my router handle it.

Agree with you about ZA, it's often problematic.

Norton no, I think it's utter crap since NAV2003.

Why?:
1) It sucks resourses big time - makes a 3GHz PC run like a 2GHz.

2) I frequently remove viruses from supposedly Norton "protected" machines.
I beleive this is because their auto updates are weekly and as you & I are
know new viruses come out daily.

Try Avast Free edition - I've known this auto update 3 times a day, although
usually it's daily.

I read a very full test and review in my PC magazine a while ago...not
too long! the results were pretty stunningly conclusive:
F-PROT AV always came up TOP MARKS
F-Secure 2nd and then you have
NOD32, AVG and various others.
However, worth noting is the fact that Norton/Symantec AND
mcafee...(just talking of AV part of their programs here) both came out
at the BOTTOM of the table with the most missed viruses and failed to
remove virus messages when compared to all of the others.
Amazingly, F-Prot was working at about a 97% success rate!
If you want tme to hunt the exact article out I will but my memory
isn't too bacd and I recall norton being someehere in the 80's as far
as % goes. Mcafee too. VERY BAD in other words.
Each program was setup on a similar newly installed PC withj only the
required programs for the test on it, an email app to test itrs email
monitoring and an internet app for the same reason.
The PCs were then subjected to a few hundred/thousand viruses and then
, noted on how they managed to intervene and stop the virii being
installed or blocked access AND just as important: Did they DETECT the
virii and/or REMOVE them?
So, F-Prot is your Top AV program. I use it and I must say it is
superb. Planted a few viruses on the pc myself(didn't activate them!)
and it found eveyr one...

I have used BlackICE as as firewall for years now wit not problems but
I do like that Agnitum software Outpost Pro firewall as it blocks ads
in webpages, detects other thungs and even helps with spyware if I am
not mistaken..
Try that.
Also sygate firewall is brilliant AND FREE TOO!

I've just upgraded my PC to an AMD 3000+ with 1GB dual bank RAM. On
re-installing basic Windows XP Pro with Office 2003, the reboot time was
really fast. I then stuck my existing copy of NAV 2005 on there and boot
time significantly reduced, i.e. the time taken from the desktop appearing
to when it actually starts responding to mouse clicks. Took NAV off and
installed AVG free and it responds a lot better. Always new NAV was
bloatware though.

Cheers, Rob.
