The IDE cable that goes to my HD doesnt have any connection for a "slave"
but the cable that goes to the floppy does ???
Are these possibly the wrong way round and are there any differences in
the cables used for the 2 IDE connections and the floppy.

The floppy cable is completely different, and does not have the same
plug on the end(s), nor the same number of wires.

It is possible to get 'single drive' EIDE cables, but they're not
common, and it's rather chinzy of whoever built the PC to have used one
- saved all of 10p by leaving out the slave connector on that cable.

Quite common on big brands - unless they put the HDD and CD on the same
cable, of course.

I wish the round cables I recently bought _were_ master only - taking up
the spare inside the case is a pain.
