Contemplating an HP Microserver but I do have quite a good PC case and
also a reasonable (not much used ) 400W PSU.

The current MoBo is running for the moment but the old AMD 3000+ CPU looks
as though it would have serious difficulty pulling the skin off a rice
pudding.

Reliability issues as well :-(

HP Microserver comes in at around £110 (I think) after cash back and is
compact.

However I am into the usual trap of having bits which look usable and not
wanting to just throw them away.

So a Motherboard bundle with the same general performance as a Microserver
but under £100 would be of interest.

That would be at least 4 SATA ports and 2 PCI Express ports, with 4GB 1600
MHz DDR3. Celeron Socket H2 (LGA 1155). Gigabit Etherent, of course.

Or the equivalent AMD configuration.

I've started looking but I am several years out of touch with the latest
processors and motherboards.

There seem to be a lot of dual core processors around. I thought that
everything was quad core or more these days, but apparently not. No
problem with dual core as processors (even Core 2 Duo) seem to have enough
grunt for most things.

I note that there is only USB 2 on the Microserver - I assume that most
modern boards would have USB 3.

Anyway, and offers for a "build yourself a Microserver" bundle for £1200
or less?

Cheers

Aw go on. Give me £1200 and I'll put a Microserver, inside your existing
metal case, with a USB3 card? Totally custom. Like.

Bloody hell!

Didn't know I was that rich.

How about less than £100?

[Although the next Microserver in the list from the one I was looking at
was almost £1200 - but, nah.]

I think that what Adrian was suggesting is to ebay the bits and pieces
you have lying around, then buy a microserver for £110. It's clearly
outstanding value at that price. I have no idea how they do it.

Point taken - however the Microserver seems to lack modern graphics (has
Matrox?) and no USB 3. Not essential, but wondering if I could get just a
little bit more for the money.

As you say, amazing value.

Just for starters, how about

£84.98

Perhaps so, but what graphics do you want on a server? Mine runs Ubuntu
server, with no X installed, and is headless so graphics are not an issue!

However some on this NG have been punting the Microserver (quite
reasonably) as a viable alternative to a budget PC as well as a server.

If I had to buy a case and PSU as well, the economics would be different,
however I am trying to weigh up the Microserver against a bottom end
mother board bundle. That is, can I get a bundle which does everything
that the Microserver does but has extra capabilities?

I am thinking about a box which can act as a server but also be re-
purposed if I need/want to.
