10/100 what does it all mean

what does 10/100 mean. Can you get just 10 or just 100 or are they combined.
In respect to hubs or ethernet cards.

In addition to Conor's reply, 100 > 100Mb is faster than 10 > 10Mbit or 10 >
100 or 100 > 10

Network cards over the years have come in all sorts of speeds, but the most
standard was 10Mbit (10,000,000 bits of data / second). Almost all older
cards (particually ISA bus) are 10Mbit. As computers got faster newer
standards came out, most notably 100Mbit and gigabit. Another enhancement
is the ablitiy to duplex - to both send and receive data simulaneously.
Full dulex cards (and switches) can and half duplex cards (and hubs) can
only send or recieve at one time.

Cards are available in 10Mbit, 10/100Mbit, 100Mbit, 100/1000Mbit and
1000Mbit (I would say that gigabit was out of scope for home networks.)

If you are connecting your computers via a hub or cross-over cable then the
link speed will the same as the lowest spec piece of hardware (ie. if you've
got a 10Mbit card connected to the hub then all connections will be running
at 10Mbit.) Also with a hub you are limited to half-duplex. If you are
connecting via a switch, then each port is a seperate segment and will
connect at the maximum speed that the NIC can.

I would recomend getting 100Mbit cards (or 10/100) if you are buying a
network from scratch and a switch if you can afford it. Network cards start
from about £10 but I would go for slightly more expensive ones. A small
switch (or switching hub at a home level) should set you back about £30.

10mbit = 1.25 mb per second (theoretical max)
100mbit = 12.5mb per second (theortical max)

Realistically on an internal network with 100mbit you should be able to get
at least 4mb per second and with 10mbit probably about 800-900k per second.

Most people should be more than satisfied with 10mbit networks at home but
for the cost difference and for future proofing (if thats possible) go for a
100mbit network hub.

Nope. Most modern 10/100 hubs operate as two segments, one 10 and one
100, thus data flow between hosts connected at 100mbps will attain full
speed, despite there being 10mbps hosts connected. Only when a 10mbps
host is involved in the transfer does the speed suffer.

I've used various speeds and topologies and this is what I've found out:
(1) You initially want a hub (I had a 8 RJ45 ports + 1 BNC, 10 Mbps hub) so
that you can become connected to other machines.
(2) Then you'll want to move onto 100 Mbit to get faster throughput (mine ->
8 port 100 Mbps hub) but you'll need to use RJ45 cabling.
(3) Then if you copy a lot of stuff around the network (you might find you
do considering that you now can), you'll want a switch since a hub
broadcasts all packet to all other ports whereas a switch only transmits the
packets to the right port. I have a 16 port 10/100 Mbps switch (a.k.a.
switching hub). I am very pleased with it and under optimal (i.e. not very
often) I can transfer ~ 10 megabytes per second from one machine to another.

(1) is good for a start and for gaming. (2) Is useful if there's only a few
machines and you don't regularly copy much arouind the network. (3) is very
handy but the most expensive but it's what I would recommend. It allows for
future expansion and ability of the network. You may want to go for less
ports but I would recommend keeping a few spare - i.e. get and 8 port
switch.
