Has anybody out there heard of "serial halving" in relation to burns
assessment? It cropped up on a recent paramedic entrance paper but no-one,
including the SDO's , had heard of it.

Rule of Halves works like this:

Any area on the body equals 100%, eg 1 arm = 100%. If you burn from
wrist to
elbow you burn 50% of 100% of the Arm, from wrist to mid forearm would
be
25% and so on.

The trick with the rule of halves is that when passing information
regarding
burns to Control/Receiving Hospital to NOT USE THE WHOLE BODY AS 100%,
as
the rule of nines did.

If, however the whole body becomes burnt then the whole body WILL
BECOME
100%. E.g. burnt from feet to nipple line then burns would be
described as
75% of 100% of whole body.

Apparently this method is preferred by burns consultants, although I
don't understand why it is better than the rule of nines.

Hi,

Just to let you know, you have got the wrong idea about serial halving. The whole body is 100%, if half of the body was burnt it would be 50%, quarter 25% etc. This method is a quick, pre-hospital method to use on scene as it doesn't require complicated calculations but it's not as accurate as the Lund and Browder chart.
