Pat's Note: Here is a pretty full report in Canada's leading "national"

Naturally the emphasis is on anything but PMWS or MRSA - you would expect
nothing else

But the telling paragraphs are these:

"Another major headache for Canadian producers is the introduction of new
country-of-origin labelling laws in the United States next September.
Canadian farmers export more than half their hogs to the U.S.
The legislation has grocery retailers in the U.S. nervous about selling
specially labelled meat, and many have started to refuse to take any pork
products that originated in Canada because of the added regulatory burden.
That has hit farmers in Manitoba, one of the largest pork-producing
provinces, especially hard.

Karl Kynoch, chair of the Manitoba Pork Council, said killing pigs with no
market for them is a last resort for producers, but many may have no choice
but to join a mass cull."

We have to be realists. If you were a retailer or middleman would you chance
Canadian pork once it can be identified as such? You don't have to worry all
the while there is no country of origin labelling. If you fill your
coldstore and the news of MRSA in pork really hits the frontpages, you are
going to be stuck with a pile of unsalable pork.

...and be realistic. It will hit the front pages in a big way. Furious
Canadians with cancelled contracts will see to that. They are going to be
hiring lawyers to sue the Americans, once they are culled out.

The Canadians have admitted that their pigs have both circovirus - PMWS and
MRSA, as have most EU countries. The Americans have both too, obviously, but
have managed to evade admitting it publicly in any major way - so far.

The current situation in Britain is obviously equally unstable: There are
massive profits to be made by those "in the know."

Now I want to take you back to events a few years ago and well worth
recalling and noting the situation now. You can read it for yourselves.

There is always money to be made during a crisis - if you know more than the
common run of men.

Defra's bent vets create the perfect scenario with their private meetings
with their favourite stakeholders.

What isn't obvious from Charlie's retelling of the story was that the real
scandal occurred after the company went bust. The fact that the pigs had
PMWS was hardly mentioned, but the glee in Scotland was pretty noticeable
when they managed to dispose of them in England.

Against this background are the MLC or whatever they are called now, sure
they want everyone to register before accessing their subsidiaries sites?
