Canola

While flying in to Stansted airport I noticed a lot of bright yellow fields
of Canola.

Well, yellow band on the outside and green in the middle. What is the effect
that causes the middle to be delayed?
If it was cool wind and shelter from the hedge I would expect the effect to
be windward rather than middle.

Might be delayed growth due to pigeon damage away from hedges. Perhaps
poor germination due to the difficult planting conditions last
August/September.

Rabbit damage tends to be semi-circular and near burrows. Hares or deer?
Not normally enough about to notice serious damage.

Perhaps the plants near the hedges are under more drought stress and
flowering early to perpetuate the species....:-)

I noticed some of the same effect.

Anther possibility is that fertility is lower around the field edges - due
to hedges creaming off nutrient and the usual response such stresses in
flowering plants is to encourage early flowering at a reduced yield in order
to ensure at least some offspring - aka seeds. If a sneak peek at harvest
time reveals smaller, slightly earlier maturing pods in those areas then
I'll have been right ;-)

Lots of crops here that were `mucked in' last Winter failed on the
headlands (and didnt do well on the rest of the field), sown in
compacted waterlogged ground
