Depending on where in the world this was, it is possible that hemp was
the fibre used. I believe that hemp is widely distributed across all the
continents (not antartica) as an indigenous plant, sisal and manilla
probably less so. Therefore, the assertion could be made that the figure
of 10,000 should amended to 17,000.
with the proviso that, 'a little knowledge is a dangerous thing - and
googling is much worse'
