1. What is a Troll
The term originally comes from a fishing technique of drawing a lure
through the water to make fish snap at it. Hence a troll is a post
designed to start arguments. The term has now been extended to cover
the persons who post trolls, as well as the posts themselves.
2. Why do people troll?
Because they haven't got a life.
3. I use uap as a advertising place: why should I care about fights
between "regulars"?
Good question. All you really need to know is that some trolls
regularly attack advertisers, and that they do not have the support of
the other regulars to do so. But see also 4a
4. Who is trolling here?
As of this draft, we have three trolls:
a. Neil Horlock/Bill Jillians/Samual Sherret
He posts just random insults, and lots of them, to the newsgroup at the
moment. Unfortunately, he also posts binaries, which are inclined to
reduce the time your provider keeps u.a.p. messages on its server. This
means, if you are an advertiser, that you have to repost your advert
more often if you want it to stay visible.
However, he has a history of trying to start cross-posted flame wars
with other newsgroups, so far unsuccessfully.
His email address at the moment is Sam.S...@mcmail.com. Until quite
recently he was posting as Neil Horlock <xn...@dial.pipex.com>
b. Alan J Holmes
He is a fairly cautious troll, since he has a university account
(@brunel.ac.uk) and they are often more responsible than commercial
ISPs. However, he still manages to post a great deal of abuse to both
regulars and advertisers on this newsgroup.
c. wm...@aol.com (real name/handle unknown)
He specialises in posting binaries to the newsgroup. Mostly of his
penis, sometimes of other things. After doing so, and receiving
sarcastic remarks from the regulars, he insults them for looking at the
image. This is probably because he wants men to look at his penis but
daren't admit he feels this way.
5. What can I do to clean up this newsgroup.
If you have the time, complaining to these people's ISPs every time they
do something dodgy (and particularly when they post binaries) might help
to at least shut them up while they get a new ISP (I believe Bill
Jillians is on his 4th). To complain, you need a copy of the post
you're complaining about, as well as the header of that post, and you
need to post this to the relevant provider. This is usually
postmaster@<isp.name>, for example
postm...@brunel.ac.uk for Alan J Holmes
postm...@mcmail.com for Bill Jillians/Samual Sherret
AOL is slightly different, as the complaints address is
ab...@aol.net for wm666
6. What can I do to make this group more readable while waiting for
their ISPs to take action?
Add the trolls addresses to your killfile.
It's quick, efficient, and if enough people do it then the offending
partys' source of pleasure will quickly disappear. As an added bonus
your download time will speed up proportionately.
Additionally, endeavour not to post replies to the trolls, no matter how
infuriating they are. It only encourages them.

Brian, assuming you are Brian and not someone forging your headers, this
is not a good move. Firstly, I have to pay for my downloads, as do most
of us, I suspect. Secondly, the Holmes Troll, being at a university
account, doesn't have to pay.
Try a different technique, please.

There must be a better reason than 'they haven't got a life'.
People post for a reason. You posted for a reason.
You wanted to inform, or entertain, or educate, or warn, whatever.
You wanted to communicate, to interact with other people.
The trolls get something out of it too.
There are (I think) two main elements to what they do.
One is based on an intellectual conceit extending to arrogance,
which says (in effect): "Look how clever I am!".
This feeling of superiority is confirmed when they see people
'falling' or 'biting'. "Jez, look at these dummies! So stupid!"
While the real (or imagined) reaction and response, I think, helps
to feed their low self-esteem. "You're a bastard - wanker - etc"
So they end up (in a twisted sort of way) feeling good about what
they've done. "OK, so I AM a bastard. But I'm a clever bastard!"
How often have you heard them saying: "You're all against me!"
"Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it infamy!".
They want to be ostracised. They don't want to be part of the
group. They want to hear people telling them to 'Fuck off!'.
That makes them feel good too.
"Yes, I'm a clever bastard and - wait for it - Hey! There it is...
Confirmed again! Everybody hates me. All's well in my world."
Nobody wants to look too closely at this because there is a little
bit of a troll in all of us. Let's face it - everyone posts to
get a response, even if the response doesn't appear on the ng.
The expectation is that someone will read it (hopefully), maybe
find it interesting, or amusing, or whatever - and respond to it.
But I'd like to hear from the trolls.
What do they get out of it? Bill? Alan? wm666?
Do you consider yourself trolls? What gives?
Should we all be doing it? And would it make us go blind?
I'd also like to hear from others - especially Caroline.
Who appears to have special psychic people-reading powers.
BTW, Mistress, please confirm that you are real.

On my main NG we had someone as bad as Alan Holmes and we finally got
rid of him. You'll have him forever as *you* incourage him to stay here.
The one and only way to get rid and piss off the Troll is to simply
ignore him. I read 220 + articles on here and Most of you mentioned him
more then twice. If all you regulars decided to ignore his every post
from now forth...then he would get bored and go.

ISP fee of £11.75 and can use the net and newsgroups as much as I want only
cost being telephone but with BT's charging rates that is negligable.

I think it refers to phone charges. Graphics files tend to be larger
and so take more time to download.

I humbly apologize to everybody for sending three copies of a large post
to the NG. This was as Alan points out a stupid and pathetic attempt to
get at him but I doubt if it cost anybody 'a considerable amount of
money' or anguish. I promise that I shall not repeat the exercise.
Should anyone feel that this has cost them personally 'a considerable
amount of money' then please advise me of the sum, ie. 1p, 2p, 5p by
email and I will add the total from all claimants to £10.00 and give
that amount to charity.

I'm not knocking it. I've no problem with what other people do with their

Give a guy a break! I've only posted about 6/7 times in the past few weeks
and 2 have been about trolls. After taking so long to feel confident enough
to post - I'm sure I'll be contributing to other threads in future.

Sure, but (a) I wanted the FAQ to be reasonably short (b) whatever they
get out of it they wouldn't get out of it if they had anything
resembling a life, or any way of getting interaction from people without
being abusive. To take Jet, the troll on a.s.big-folks as an example,
she could go to a.s.diet.rx and tell _them_ she dropped 10 dress sizes
as a result of taking a poisonous drug and therefore she's better than
them, and they'd probably agree.
So maybe they're people who can't recognise attention unless it's in the
form of abuse returned for their abuse?

In a way, they've got a win-win situation. Either the newsgroup(s)
respond(s), in which case they've "won", or they get to peddle their
hate without interruption, in which case they've "won". There is a
theory that they get bored and go away if everyone leaves them alone,
but unfortunately, I don't think any newsgroup has yet succeeded in
doing so long enough.
I attempt to ignore the trolls on this newsgroup, but think it's
necessary to produce a Troll FAQ because otherwise the advertisers lump
the trolls in with the regulars, and this newsgroup gets a reputation
for being somewhere one (expecially if one is an erotic minority member)
cannot post ads without receiving abusive posted or emailed responses
from the regulars.

Sure, we all post controversial things at times, even things designed to
get a rise out of people. But if we're not trolls we do it from within
the confines of the group, whilst being supportive of the group, and we
post other things as well.

AFAIK, Bill cycles through different phases, from manically abusive
(replying to nearly every message here with FUCK OFF) to depressively
apologetic ("I promise not to do it again"). I believe I have noticed 3
or 4 of these cycles here in this group, and I think I only came here in
February.
Alan is still determined to portray himself as an innocent person abused
by heartless women, so don't expect any clear thinking out of him.
Wm666 wants to be an exhibitionist but also wants to be able to
blame/punish others for looking. Hence he posts binaries of his penis,
and then get abusive with those who comment on it. In a way, he reminds
me of "Extrema" on s.s.bondage-bdsm. Extrema is harmless, and doesn't
really do anything that could be called trolling; however, every 3 weeks
or so he's on the newsgroup with a question relating to large enema
nozzles inserted in his backside. People have so far answered him
sensibly, and sometimes he's come back sensibly but still emphasising
the huge enema etc. He never seems to contribute to the newsgroup at
other times, and doesn't post binaries to it. I think he's found a way
to use the internet for exhibitionism without offending anyone else, and
is accepting of his own exhibitionism.

us who have to pay our own phone bill (albeit only a small amount each)
rather than the Holmes Troll, who does not have to pay his own phone
bill, and that he should think up a better strategy. Perhaps he could
post the JANET TOS and see if the rest of us think the Holmes Troll has
breached any of it, for example?

Aren't you the lucky one. Without thinking about BT charges I can
think of other situations:
1) Where the person is charged by his ISP by the amount of time he is
on line (AOL (though that's changed/changing), and Compuserve - and
one or two other's beside (MSN?)). The long it takes to download, the
more they have to pay.
2) Limited time accounts - some ISP's have accounts for those who are
dreadfully addicted to the net, or otherwise will not make heavy use
of it (Myself included - addiction, not low use), these accounts
having a time limit on (Mine is 10hrs a month).
3) Combination of both the above probably exists.
4) Anyone still unlucky to only be using a 9600 baud modem - and I'm
bad at 14.4K baud. The slower the speed, the longer it takes, the
less time i have left.
And as someone else pointed out, the chances of the intended victim
having to pay for his connection in this case was slim (there's other
methods on a similar tack that I use for spam - but I'm not repeating
them to anyone - I have 90% success rate in not getting spam from the
same site twice).

No I am on line at least 4 hrs per day and use the phone for international
business and my bill for calls only averages according to BT £151 as they
are offering me another 25% discount on the excess above F & F and Premier
Line if I exceed this in the quarter between December & March
