Dear Colleagues,

It’s been a bit quiet on here while we have been working away developing a range of deliverables for you to review, and this is the first of those.

You may recall from the draft Recommendation document that one of the key properties of a Top Level Ontology for the FDM is simplicity. One of the ways of achieving that is by generating objects, rather than by defining them, since they then become derived from the objects they are generated from, reducing the number of defined objects.

This paper addresses the somewhat technical matter of defining how basic objects like mereological sums and sets are generated. The meat of the paper defines the mechanisms in First Order Logic.

One of the things we are trying to do on the NDT programme is to make the work we are doing as accessible as possible. With technical papers like this, there is often a high bar of knowledge required just to be able to read and understand the paper. One of the things we are actively trying to do is to make the paper more accessible, not by dumbing down the content, but by explaining it is as clear a way as possible, assuming as little prior knowledge as possible, and pointing to resources where that prior knowledge can be acquired. So, while there are a lot of equations written in First Order Logic in the paper, there is a plain English description following them and there is a reference to an introductory text on First Order Logic for those that have not had a training in the subject. Also, for academic papers that are critical to the development of the paper, rathe rather than leaving you both the problem of finding and digesting the source material, a summary of the key material is provided either in the text or an annex.

What we would like is your help in improving the accessibility. I have already reviewed the document, and it is the version with my comments that I am circulating so you can see examples of the kinds of comments we are after, for when we have assumed understanding you might not have.

If you could return your comments to me or to the list by January 25th, that would be helpful.

Regards

Matthew

Apologies, I attached a previous draft to my message below. This is (hopefully) the correct one (with my comments).

Hi Guys,

The paper refers to earlier papers on the topic.
Some of you may find these useful, so I have made them easy to access.

Here are links to downloads:
For those who do not want to sign into academia, I have put the papers (for a limited time) into dropbox here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/lsrp6mdch6eg8g9/ConstructionalPapers.zip?dl=0
