Hi all,

So, EMF 2012 is done and gone.  EMFM operated for 3 days (well, 3.5) on site, live for most of it.  We had lots of guests, from master lockpickers to game developers to organisers to hardware hackers to zombies.  It was great fun, and thanks go out to everyone who came along!  Especially gmc, without whom it's unlikely we would have gotten anywhere.

We also tried to stream video from all the stages for all of the talks.  This went slightly less well.  We did manage to stream most of the talks in some manner - however only one stage had video and we couldn't composite in the on-screen content, so it was one camera only.  The other stage was audio only, as we simply lacked the cameras to hook up to stream with.

Retrospectively, I would suggest that this was down to the fact we didn't have a known working solution when we started - unlike the radio studio which has been used in anger before.  A number of people donated a number of cameras, capture devices, workstations etc - however we didn't know for sure that they all worked together before setting them up.  A number of items arrived on the day talks were due to start.

To this end, then, I am have made the suggestion that if we do decide to take on the streaming and recording of talks again - we will either need to be able to test the entire setup with plenty of time before the event, or hire in a known working system.  Initial research suggests that we can hire in a full setup that will allow us to use several inputs, with overlays and titling, for about £400 for the weekend - which we know works.  The infrastructure we had did work - the problem was more the source of the signal than anything else.

The other issue we had was that our team ended up running the AV for the stages much of the time.  This is also something I am going to be addressing before the next event.

So I'd like to thank everyone who contributed anything to this project, from advice to technical help to kit donations, and hope to see you at the next camp in 2014, and perhaps the 1 day event due to be organised in 2013.  Also, I hear gmc is going to be doing a bit of radio at OHM 2013 https://ohm2013.org/ (amongst a raft of other things!) - which I'm looking forward to attending myself!

To this end, I'll give everyone on to make a few last comments and close off this list to become announce only, until we encounter our next challenge!

Cheers,

Chris Roberts

On that note, I am currently trying to piece together the recordings from
alpha stage, some of which have 40 dv files per lecture session. Converting
them to ogv (theora/ogg) and m4v (h264/aac).

Was there any video recorded from stage b? I believe it was recorded onto the
camera itself. Anyone have those recordings?

Just the bare fact that we had a heterogenous pool of old camera's of unknown
state was the main problem I believe. The software chain Chris has set up worked
beautifully IMHO. Had we rented some prosumer cams with dv out, things would
have been much better without having to worry about weird setups and cameras
that need rebooting every so often.

Also, the machines I brought were great but lacked a bit of disk space. Next time
we should factor that in as well.

One more retrospective note from my end is that we IMHO did not deal well with
managing volunteers. We started way too late to consider the fact that we needed
more than just me and Chris, and when people came to volunteer we (at least I)
wasn't really able to tell them when they would be needed and explain what they
would need to do. So for next time I would suggest paying more attention to
volunteer management and volunteer briefing.

Thanks all for your help! I had a great time doing the a/v stuff, video stuff
and radio!

I have the camera with recordings for Saturday and Sunday.

I've had a quick look through and the recordings are a bit better than I
expected, need to get them off the camera to really see what the audio
has come out like though. It will probably be the weekend before I have
time to do that. If we do need to stitch in the audio recordings from
the desk: does anyone have access to one of the video editing apps that
do auto alignment?

If anybody knows who it was that was asking about footage of the little
kid entertaining everyone before the safe cracking talk: that is in the
recordings.

That's awesome!

Sully offered to add the audio to the video using some video editing station(s)
at a university (where supposedly he works). Actually, he's probably on this list
as well :)

I've tweeted it :)

Did you manage to pull them off the cam?? If you have them, i think the
best plan is to get Chris to give you an account on his storage box, so
you can copy them onto that. I'll then do the same with the audio we
captured, and then Sully can go wild with that during this week perhaps?

As for the EMFM radio recordings, I have all of it complete now, just need
to cut up the last few hours.

Sorry for the horribly slow response.

I have the footage off the camera. The audio isn't too bad. More
annoying is that in some of them the screen refresh rate is interacting
badly with the camera shutter speed and it flickers.

I'm away from home at the moment, but get back on Friday so could start
uploading them then if I get access to the storage box (or I can
probably find space on one of my machines).

You have a place for it then?

I can get Robert the link for uploading the stuff to wipkip.nikhef.nl if
the storage box is going to disappear..

Sorry for not moving faster with this. It's still on my TODO list - I'll
move it a bit close to the top :)

I've topped-and-tailed a couple of the talks so they should be ready to
go public. I was exporting them at stupidly high bit rate mpeg-2 so need
to transcode to something sane: what are we using for the rest of the
videos?

I have freed up some space on one of my servers so can start uploading
now.

They will appear at emf.boadegl.com
