There is not much of 2024 left now and we will soon be celebrating the shortest day of the year. Many will be enjoying a well earned break and maybe the chance to watch a few beekeeping videos or read a favourite beekeeping book.

Those looking forward to starting beekeeping for the first time will be checking out their local beekeeping courses and the availability of bees to get them going next year.

Some may still be undecided on what type of hive to buy. Should it be wood or polystyrene? National or Langstroth? Or one of the many other hive designs.

Does the choice of hive affect the choice bees you buy? Should you start with an overwintered nuc? Or would a full colony suit you better?

Getting in touch with an established local bee keeper can be a great help to get you started.

For next year's beginners (and those looking to expand) I have two new contacts for you who are keen to help you get set up with bees. One is in Cheshire and the other is near Exiter in Devon.

Happy solstice.

Yours,

Patrick
