Flaming June? June gap?

Hi All,

The spell of hot weather in the second half of May gave our virgin queens the weather they needed for their mating flights and the earliest are now laying.

Summer nucs? Yes In Essex, Cardiff, Newport, Coventry, Nuneaton ... There will be summer nucs available in different parts of the UK - so if you are looking but can't find one please drop me an email. I may be able to help.

It's not quite so hot here now as we seem to be getting April's showers. Although I must say every drop is very welcome as we have, up until now, had an exceptionally dry Spring over here in the East.

A tip for your honey production colonies;- if your colonies are now large and well established it's the time to remove some of your outside frames if they are full of honey and to put some empty drawn out frames in the middle of your brood box. If your outside frames are already full of brood you can't do that but right now you don't need honey in the brood box but space for the queen to lay in. 

You may notice the June gap - but with the weather becoming so erratic it may not last for long. Here the summer flow is a mixture of Bramble, Lime, Sweet Chestnut and wild flowers. The cultivated blackberries are now in full bloom and I guess the bramble is still a week or so away from blooming. A busy time for our bees!
