community groups came together on Saturday for
the rally Housing rights campaigners will join
with community groups and local activists this
weekend as a march is due to be held against
evictions in

The march saw participants walk from Dunville
Park in West Belfast to City Hall as they aim to
shine a light on the “oppressive power that
landlords hold over tenants.” It will feature
several community and activist groups, including
CATU Belfast, PPR, Anaka Women’s Collective,
Beechmount Residents Collective, the People’s
Housing Bill campaign group, Glór na Móna, An
Dream Dearg and Trademark Belfast. Hannah Gibson,
chair of CATU Belfast, said the march hopes to
raise awareness about the impact the housing
crisis in Northern Ireland is having on working
class communities while calling for an eviction
ban and safe and secure homes for all. She said:
“This Saturday, working class communities on the
front lines of the housing crisis will shine a
light on the destructive impact of evictions on
tenants, their families and the wider community –
and the oppressive power that landlords hold over
tenants. “For too long, private and social
landlords have been allowed to evict tenants
without cause. Private landlords evict their
tenants for demanding basic repairs, asserting
their legal rights or even attempting to question
a rent increase. An eviction ban would empower
tenants to challenge landlord power and offer
protection from revenge evictions. “The social
rented sector once offered tenants far greater
protection and security of tenure – but this is
being continually eroded. Tenants are evicted at
the first sign of arrears and, in the case of
tenancy succession, in the immediate aftermath of
a bereavement. “Our demand is clear: we want
safe, secure homes for all. That means no more
evictions, the introduction of rent caps and rent
reductions, security of tenure for all people,
and the end of the broken housing system that
prioritises private profit over the public good.”
Community worker Sean Doherty from Beechmount
Residents Collective said he has seen first hand
how evictions can lead to tenants living in
temporary accommodation miles away from their
families and support networks. He said that
communities are being destroyed as he calls for urgent reform.

you pay your council tax in smaller amounts.
You’ll probably be asked to commit to paying a
regular amount each month. If you’re not sure how
much you can afford, you can use a budgeting tool
or talk to a specialist adviser at Citizens
Advice.

third time you’ve been late with council tax
payments this year), the council will send you a
‘final notice’. The final notice will tell you to
pay all of your council tax for the rest of the
year within 7 days. If you don’t pay within 7
days of the final notice Your council will
usually apply to the courts for permission to
collect the debt from you – this is known as a
‘liability order’. Your council should look at
all other options before applying for a liability
order. For example, they should talk to you about
an affordable repayment plan or give you time to
apply for Council Tax Reduction if you’re
eligible. Don’t ignore these notices. You might
be able to get extra time by applying for the
Breathing Space scheme. If you’re eligible, you
could get 60 days of breathing space where your
creditors can’t: contact you take action to make
you pay add interest and charges to your debt If
your council is already taking deductions from
Universal Credit, these will continue even if you
have breathing space. To see if breathing space
is right for you, talk to an adviser. If you’re
not sure if you have to pay the council tax debt,
you can check if you have to pay the debt. If you
don’t pay off your council tax debt The council
will apply for a liability order to recover the
debt. This means they might be able to take
action to get the money you owe. This is called
‘enforcement action’. Usually the council will
want you to pay the debt within the current tax
year. The council might: send a bailiff to take
items from your home – check what to do if
bailiffs visit your home take a fixed percentage
from your pay – this is called an ‘attachment of
earnings’ take money from your benefit payments,
such as Universal Credit – check what to do if
your Universal Credit is reduced to pay your debt
secure the debt against your home if you own it,
called a Charging Order – check what to do if a
creditor applies for a Charging Order against
your home apply to have you declared bankrupt if
you owe more than £5,000 – check how bankruptcy
might affect you If you’re vulnerable, talk to
your council to see what other options there are.
You can be vulnerable in lots of different
situations, for example if you’re disabled,
seriously ill, have mental health problems or are
a single parent. If you still don’t pay your
council tax debt You could go to prison for up to
3 months. This is only if the court decides that
you’re deliberately not paying your council tax
and bailiffs haven’t been able to recover the debt.

profits from a £1 billion-a-year Crown Estate
wind farm deal to “be directed for wider public
good” rather than to fund the monarchy King
Charles has asked for profits from a £1
billion-a-year Crown Estate wind farm deal to be
used for the “wider public good” rather than as a
funding boost for the monarchy. Under the
taxpayer-funded Sovereign Grant, which is
currently £86.3 million a year, the monarch
receives 25 per cent of the Crown Estate’s annual
surplus, which includes an extra 10 per cent for
the refurbishment of Buckingham Palace. Six new
offshore wind energy lease agreements, announced
by the Crown Estate on Thursday, have generated a
major windfall for the Estate, which would
usually lead to a jump in the monarchy’s official
funding. But Charles, who highlighted the
cost-of-living crisis in his Christmas message,
has requested that the extra funds “be directed
for wider public good”, instead of to the
Sovereign Grant, at a time when many are facing
financial hardship. It is not clear as to the
exact amount of taxpayer funding the King has
passed up and asked to be used for the public
good, but it is likely to be many millions.

planet to be put ahead of profit? By Guy Standing
July 19, 2023 Ever since ancient Rome, the sea,
seabed and seashore have been accepted as part of
the commons­res communes omnium­belonging to
everybody equally, and inalienable as state or
private property.

commons as a distinct form of property was taken
forward in Magna Carta and the Charter of the
Forest of 1217, the twin bedrocks of common law
and all democracies….. In its eagerness to make
profits, the Crown Estate has even sold
development rights for one patch of seabed to two
different projects at the same time, one for a
giant Danish-owned offshore windfarm, the other
for storing carbon dioxide under the seabed. An
industry insider commented tersely that the Crown
Estate was being “a bit greedy”. By the financial
year ending in 2023, the value of the Crown
Estate’s marine businesses was £5.7bn, up by 14
per cent on the year before, mainly because of
offshore wind. The Crown is not liable to pay tax
on the sovereign grant. Overall, the Estate’s
portfolio is worth almost £16bn. It is a major
industrial enterprise, but one that does not have
to adhere to free market principles, let alone be
answerable to the commoners. The Welsh should
feel particularly aggrieved, in that whereas all
management and revenue of the Crown Estate in
Scotland is in the hands of the Scottish
government, revenue generated in Wales is not
devolved. Extraordinarily, the value of the Crown
Estate’s marine portfolio in Wales rose from £49m
in 2020 to £549m in 2021 and to £603m in 2022.
None of it went to the Welsh government, let
alone to Welsh commoners. No wonder a majority of
Welsh people want the Estate to be devolved as it
is in Scotland…… Then there are around 750
aquaculture sites­for farming fish (mostly
salmon), shellfish and crustaceans­from which the
Crown Estate Scotland (CES), an independent body
that gives its entire revenue to the Scottish
government, earns a hefty sum. The CES, which
takes 1.5 per cent of turnover income, must be
partially answerable for fish farming’s shocking
record in Britain: farmed salmon have a premature
mortality rate as high as 24 per cent from
disease and lice infestations; mass escapes
threaten wild fish species; and the corporations,
most foreign-owned, pay only half the true costs
of production, with the remainder, including
environmental costs, borne by local communities.
Scottish fisheries complain that licensed fish
farms discharge sea lice and pesticides into the
sea, killing wild fish. The CES, although more
accountable to Scottish ministers, ignores the
precautionary principle, and allows seabed
dredging for scallops and bottom trawling for
prawns, both of which do massive harm to marine
ecosystems. If the CES behaved as a real steward
of the commons, it would demand that salmon
farmers met higher ecological standards. If it
cannot fulfil its positive duty to protect the
commons then it should not be steward at all.

Empire: Contrary to Roosevelt’s wishes, as we
have seen, Britain certainly did use the
Commonwealth, Britain’s leverage in post-war
Western Europe and at the United Nations to forge
a bloc against the Soviet Union, ultimately
successfully. The usurpation of Roosevelt’s
intentions was confirmed when, just under a year
after the President’s death, Winston Churchill
launched the Cold War with a speech at
Westminster College in Fulton, New Orleans, where
after being introduced by Roosevelt’s successor
Harry Truman, he rhetorically divided the world
into Eastern and Western Blocs.

of control from Moscow.” However, perhaps the
most telling rhetoric from this speech is
Churchill’s reference to the special role of the
Anglo-Saxon [English speaking] peoples: “Let no
man underrate the abiding power of the British
Empire and Commonwealth. Because you see the 46
millions in our island harassed about their food
supply, of which they only grow one half, even in
war-time,

passionate war effort, do not suppose that we

causes which you and we espouse. If the
population of the English-speaking Commonwealths
be added to that of the United States with all
that such co-operation implies in the air, on the
sea, all over the globe and in science and in
industry, and in moral force, there will be no
quivering, precarious balance of power to offer
its temptation to ambition or adventure. On the
contrary, there will be an overwhelming assurance
of security. If we adhere faithfully to the
Charter of the United Nations and walk forward in
sedate and sober strength seeking no one’s land
or treasure, seeking to lay no arbitrary control
upon the thoughts of men; if all British moral
and material forces and convictions are joined
with your own in fraternal association, the
high-roads of the future will be clear, not only
for us but for all, not only for our time, but
for a century to come.” Churchill’s rhetoric
outlines the vision for the Fourth British
Empire, which would and did combine the might of
the Commonwealth and United States, creating a
ring around the world that suffocated the Soviet
Union. For all his high-flown oratory on the
subject of morality, Churchill’s focus on the
role of the Anglo Saxons in particular reveals
the racialised and indeed ultimately
paternalistic logic of an Empire built on
foundations of class and race. The words of
Churchill’s Fulton Address echo the earlier
comments from the ally of Alfred Milner –himself
an avowed “race patriot”(Steyn, xiii) – Round
Table founding member Joseph Chamberlain: “I
believe that the British race is the greatest of
the governing races that the world has ever seen…
It is not enough to occupy great spaces of the
world’s surface unless you can make the best of
them. It is the duty of a landlord to develop his
estate.” The Fourth British Empire has
established a Rules Based Order – an interlocking

away with the Empire do not intend to facilitate
a chaotic collapse of the international order,
which would result in the further impoverishment
and deaths of billions of people, they must have
a very detailed alternative mapped out and ready
to go before they instigate the end of Empire.
Neither the people of the West, nor the rest of
the world, will support a plan that leaves them
worse off, even if they are justifiably unhappy
with a status quo that discriminates against them.

British Museum hosts event celebrating the
creation of Israel with many important people

were reportedly told there would be a “large
corporate event” that evening. They said they
were asked to leave work early. That evening,
British ministers and prominent politicians were
seen arriving at the country’s largest museum. So
was Jimmy Carr, one of Britain’s most prominent
television personalities. The event, which had
not been advertised, was no corporate affair.

them into a side street. Inside the museum, the
Labour ministers in attendance could listen to
entertainment by the host, Carr, while rubbing
shoulders with prominent opposition politicians
who had been invited to the exclusive bash. Among
them was Nigel Farage – leader of Reform UK,
which polls regularly indicate is the most
popular party in the country. Also seen was Kemi
Badenoch – leader of the Conservative party. It
was quite a statement for these British
politicians to attend an event at which the
keynote speech was given by Israeli ambassador
Tzipi Hotovely, who once called the Nakba an
“Arab lie” and is an avowed opponent of the
creation of a Palestinian state. More so, given
that it has been less than a week since Israel’s
security cabinet approved a plan to “capture”
Gaza and hold its territory, and Israeli Finance
Minister Bezalel Smotrich vowed that Gaza would
be entirely destroyed. Moreover, earlier on
Tuesday, the British government was in court
facing a legal challenge over its decision to
allow the export of F-35 parts to a global pool
that could eventually end up in Israeli jets.
Hotovely is herself no stranger to controversy.
She takes an interventionist approach to British politics.

Thrives Off Havoc Ostensibly, Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu announced his decision on
Monday to appoint Eli Sharvit, a former head of
the Israeli Navy, as the next head of the Shin
Bet security service. His decision comes despite
the petitions submitted to the High Court of
Justice challenging the dismissal of the current
Shin Bet director, Ronen Bar, which will be heard
only on April 8. In fact, Netanyahu has restarted
the chaos machine for which he is known.

all, this isn’t a functional appointment, and it
certainly wasn’t made out of professional
considerations or in good faith. It’s a political
maneuver that put all the players into an
impossible situation. That’s how he operates.
With a single announcement, he’s managed both to
needle the institutions and individuals he’s
clashing with – the Supreme Court, the attorney
general and the outgoing Shin Bet director –
while also setting a trap for the opposition and
the protest movement. He nominated a reasonable
candidate who was even affiliated with the
protests against the judicial overhaul,
apparently so that members of his governing
coalition would oppose the appointment. That
created a dilemma for the protest activists and
the opposition. Should they defend Sharvit
because he is being attacked over his support for
the protests, or should they oppose his
appointment because it was a provocation against
the legal proceedings that are still underway on
the issue of Bar’s dismissal? Moreover, all this
is happening against the background of Qatargate,
which escalated on Monday when police arrested
Yonatan Urich and Eli Feldstein and summoned
Netanyahu to testify in the case. From the moment
Sharvit’s appointment was announced, Netanyahu
could relax in his chair and watch the angry
reactions from every side with glee. And indeed,
what hasn’t happened? The Movement for Quality
Government in Israel, one of the petitioners
against Bar’s dismissal, issued a statement
saying the announcement of Sharvit’s appointment
a week before the court hearing on the petitions
was “an attempt to create facts on the ground.

scale of death and tragedy in Palestine, but then
segued the discussion into the defence of his

to destroy Palestinians. The exchange took place
during a panel discussion at the Hill and Valley
Forum in Washington. (AFP) “The obvious solution
to war is to have the West have strongest and
most precise deadly weapons possible so we can

that nobody attacks you,” he continued after the
protester had been escorted. “She believes I’m
evil, and I believe she’s an unwitting product of

briefly addressed the criticisms leveled against
his company with regard to defence contracts in a
letter to Palantir shareholders issued shortly
after the company announced its quarterly earning
where he went as far as to quote former US
President Richard Nixon. “Always remember, others
may hate you, but those who hate you don’t win,
unless you hate them. And then, you destroy
yourself,” he wrote. “We note only that our
commitment to building software for the US
military, to those whom we have asked to step
into harm’s way, remains steadfast, when such a
commitment is fashionable and convenient and when
it is not. In recent months, other recent
technology exhibitions and conferences have been
interrupted by protesters expressing dismay
towards a technology executive working with the
military. Mustafa Suleyman, Microsoft’s head of
artificial intelligence, was interrupted in April
by multiple protesters who criticised the company
for having contracts with the Israeli military.

unprecedentedly large scale of the world economy
is creating an unprecedented environmental
crisis, one that threatens the lives and
well-being of billions of people and the survival
of millions of other species on the planet, and
perhaps even our own. Thus we arrive at the Age
of Sustainable Development. As an intellectual
pursuit, sustainable development tries to make
sense of the interactions of three complex
systems: the world economy, the global society
and the planet’s physical environment. How does
an economy of 7.2 billion people and $90 trillion
gross world output change over time? How does a
global society of such inequality of income,
wealth and power function? And what happens when

Sir Gwyn Jenkins led UK Special Forces (UKSF) in
Afghanistan at a time when alleged war crimes
were committed A top general who failed to report
evidence of alleged SAS war crimes in Afghanistan
later oversaw the rejection of hundreds of UK
resettlement applications from Afghan commandos
who served with the elite regiment, BBC Panorama
can reveal. Gen Sir Gwyn Jenkins led UK Special
Forces (UKSF) in Afghanistan at a time when
alleged war crimes were committed. He later
appointed a UKSF officer under his command, who
had also served in Afghanistan, to assess the
Afghan commando applications after special forces
headquarters was given a controversial veto over
them. Thousands of applications from individuals
with credible evidence of service with Afghan
Special Forces, including the units known as the
Triples, were then rejected, leaving many of the
former commandos at the mercy of the Taliban. The
rejections are controversial because they came at
a time when a judge-led public inquiry in the UK
had begun investigating the SAS for alleged war
crimes on operations on which the Triples were
present. If the Afghan commandos were in the UK,
they could be called as witnesses – but the
inquiry has no power to compel testimony from
foreign nationals who are overseas. Some of those
denied visas were subsequently tortured and
killed by the Taliban, according to former
colleagues, family members and lawyers. According
to internal emails and testimony from within the
Ministry of Defence (MoD), obtained by Panorama,
the UK Special Forces officer appointed by Gen
Jenkins stood over civil service caseworkers from
the resettlement scheme and instructed them to
reject the Triples applications, one after
another, on what sources described as spurious
grounds. A senior government source close to the
process told the BBC that the UK Special Forces
officer “would never have acted without
direction”, adding that “everything would have gone through Gwyn Jenkins”.

further distance Muslims from the true basis of
Sunni Islam in our time, through the most recent
manifestation of the Divide and Conquer strategy,
that of Salafis against Sufis, or Traditional
Muslims, known as Wasatim, who provide accurate
criticism of the other, in order to each recruit
dupes to their respective deviations.
