Protest about luxury housing built on former
Bristol Zoo site. Activists rally over Bristol
Zoo Gardens sale The proposed sale of the former
Bristol Zoo Gardens site is “a scandal happening
in plain sight”, according to campaigners who
protested outside the offices of the developer
set to purchase the land. Acorn Property Group
has denied claims linking its planned development
of the Clifton site to an official warning notice
from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA),
saying it relates to a separate part of the
business and does not affect the deal for the zoo
site. Justin Morris, chief executive of Bristol
Zoological Society, said the notice “has no
bearing on the sale”.
a statement, Morris described the redevelopment
of the historic land as an opportunity to open
the gardens to the public for the first time and
fund the charity’s conservation and education
work. Around 50 people gathered outside the
company’s Clifton Down Road offices on Wednesday
afternoon to oppose the sale and plans which
include nearly 200 homes, a cafe, a playground
and free public access to the gardens. Acorn
Property Group said it closed its the offices
during the protest to protect the welfare of
staff. The plans for the former zoo site in
Clifton include building 196 new homes – image:
Bristol Zoological Society The FCA released a
warning notice for “RST Group Holdings Ltd (t/a
Acorn Property Invest / Acorn / Acorn Property
Group)” in December 2025 warning prospective
investors that the companies are not authorised
by the FCA to “carry out or promote financial
services in the UK”. The Acorn Property Group
spokesperson said the warning relates only to
wording previously used in marketing materials
for its investment arm and “does not amount to
any finding of fraudulent activity”. The company
added it is working with the FCA to remove the
notice. “We remain fully committed to delivering
the scheme, which will include a mix of housing,
a cafe, playground and free public access to the
gardens for the first time in history,” the
spokesperson told Bristol24/7. Campaigners
believe there is still time to reverse the
historic zoo’s closure – photo: Rob Browne Morris
addressed concerns over tree removal at the site:
“There are 218 existing trees, 45 groups of trees
and four hedges. “Under the planning consent, 80
trees and three hedges will be removed, 44 trees
will be translocated and 470 new trees will be
planted. “This work is scheduled to finish before
the bird nesting season.” Morris added: “The
Society continues to be committed to the sale of
Bristol Zoo Gardens to Acorn Property Group, and
we expect to complete the sale shortly.”,,,

Economic downturn post Iran war – recession,
depression. UK households face £300 increase in
energy bills because of Donald Trump’s Iran war
The conflict is set to have a devastating effect
on Britain’s economy and living standards.
Household energy bills are set to rise by more
than £300 because of Donald Trump’s war against
Iran, experts have warned. The Government said it
was monitoring the situation “hour by hour” and
stands ready to help struggling families, but
Chancellor Rachel Reeves suffered a blow last
night as official figures showed public debt
rising faster than expected.
jumped to £14.3 billion in February, £2.2 billion
higher than a year ago, despite predictions that
it would fall. Experts said the Treasury faced a
“double squeeze”, with the conflict in the Gulf
likely to cut tax revenue by damaging Britain’s
economy, at the same time as placing the
Chancellor under pressure to provide cash for
struggling businesses and households.
Conservative Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride said
the borrowing rise was a result of Labour’s
“irresponsible choices”, including allowing the
benefits bill to soar. He said: “We’re saddling
the next generation with the cost of their
failure to live within our means.” Treasury
Minister James Murray, the Chief Secretary to the
Treasury, said: “We know there is more to do to.
We have to stop spending £1 in every £10 on debt
interest, so more money can be spent on policing,
schools and the NHS.” The unexpected rise in
borrowing is likely to limit the Chancellor’s
room for manoeuvre after a package of support
following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine,
including subsidies for energy bills and council
tax, cost the Treasury £51 billion. Energy
experts Cornwall Insight issued a prediction that
the Ofgem price cap, which limits what suppliers
can charge domestic consumers, will rise to
£1,973 per year for the average household, up by
£332 from April’s figure. They previously
predicted a £4 increase, but changed the new
figure is a direct result of the war against
Iran, including attacks on Iran’s South Pars
gasfield, the largest in the world, and Iranian
strikes on a gas facility in Qatar. Craig Lowrey,
Principal Consultant at Cornwall Insight, said:
“Gas markets were already volatile, and the
Israeli strike on Iran’s South Pars field, and
Iran’s subsequent retaliation, has increased that
instability.” He added: “The ultimate scale of
any increases in bills, whether in July or
further ahead, will depend on how long the
disruption continues.” It echoed a warning from
the Bank of England earlier this week, which said
conflict in the Middle East “has caused a
significant increase in global energy and other
commodity prices, which will affect households’
fuel and utility prices and have indirect effects
via businesses’ costs.” Ofgem’s price cap is
based on average wholesale prices over a
three-month period. Gas prices have been climbing
in recent weeks, and this is likely to feed
through into future electricity prices and the
cost of heating homes. UK natural gas prices
reached a three-year high on Thursday after
jumping by around 25% during the day, and eased
back a little on Friday. Martin Beck, chief
economist at WPI Strategy, said the Chancellor’s
efforts to control debt may be doomed to failure
if the war continues. He said: “The shock to
energy prices creates a double squeeze for the
public finances if it persists. “Higher oil and
gas prices would lift North Sea revenues, and
stronger inflation could boost receipts from VAT
and frozen tax allowances, but those gains would
likely be outweighed by the damage to tax
revenues from weaker growth and higher public
spending on welfare, debt interest costs, and
pressure for fiscal support for households and
energy-intensive businesses.” Prime Minister Sir
Keir Starmer warned that the longer the conflict
continues, “the bigger the impact on the cost of
living.” He said: “The best way forward is a negotiated settlement with Iran”.

WW3? Israel attacks Iranian leaders and Iran gas
field. Iran’s South Pars Gas Field Is Attacked,
Sending Energy Prices Soaring The field is part
of a vast gas reservoir shared by Iran and Qatar.
The strike appeared to be one of the most
significant attacks on an energy site since the
U.S.-Israeli air war against Iran began. Iran and
Qatar on Wednesday accused Israel of attacking a
giant offshore natural gas field that the two
countries share, sending the prices of oil and
natural gas soaring on what would be a sharp
escalation of strikes on energy infrastructure in
the war against Iran. Iran uses most of its
natural gas domestically, meaning that the
strikes will most likely have a limited effect on
the global supply of gas, which is used in power
plants, home furnaces and heavy industry.
<https://archive.is/nv7Iw>But the attacks signal
that the Persian Gulf’s extensive energy
facilities may be at growing risk. Iran’s oil
ministry said on social media that airstrikes had
damaged a number of its facilities connected to
the South Pars gas field. It appeared to be one
of the most significant energy sites to be hit
since the U.S.-Israeli air war against Iran began
nearly three weeks ago. Iranian state media
reported that oil and petrochemical facilities in
the southern city of Asaluyeh, a key hub for the
country’s energy industry, were also hit by an
airstrike. The extent of the damage was not
immediately clear, and Iranian state media
reported that fires at the energy facilities had
been brought under control. But the strikes
illustrated how the war has threatened oil and
gas production facilities. The South Pars field
accounts for about 70 to 75 percent of Iran’s
natural gas production. Most of that fuel is used
in the country, partly because Western economic
sanctions constrain Iran’s ability to trade
internationally. But reports of the attack caused
the price of Brent Crude, the international oil
benchmark, to surge more than 6 percent to over
$109 a barrel as investors worried that the
attack may prompt Iran to strike oil and gas
fields and facilities in countries like Saudi
Arabia that have close relations with the United
States. The price of natural gas also rose by
about 6 percent in Europe. Qatar condemned the
attacks. Majed al-Ansari, a spokesman for Qatar’s
foreign ministry, accused Israel of taking a
“dangerous and irresponsible step,” and warned
that targeting shared energy infrastructure could
threaten global energy security. Israel did not
immediately comment on the reports. Iran’s
semiofficial Tasnim news agency quoted the
governor of Asaluyeh as saying that attacks on
South Pars gas facilities “caused fires in
several refinery units.” He said the fires were
contained and “the situation in the area is now
fully under control,” Tasnim reported. South Pars
makes up about a third of the world’s largest
natural gas reserve, which stretches from Qatar
toward Iran and contains enough to supply the
world’s needs for about 13 years, according to
Reuters. Qatar’s facilities there did not appear
to have been targeted on Wednesday. Qatar, which
calls its fields in the reservoir the North Dome,
is the world’s third-largest exporter of
liquefied natural gas and has made hundreds of
billions of dollars from the industry over
decades. (To transport natural gas on oceangoing
ships, companies must cool it until it turns into
liquid.) Many of its installations in reservoir
are joint ventures with Western energy companies,
including the U.S. giants ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips.

Celebrating the Anniversary of the Iranian
Revolution Report from Tehran about Iranians
celebrating Al Quds
Day.<https://news.sky.com/video/iranian-president-attends-quds-day-rally-in-iran-13519318>
Iranian president attends Quds Day rally in Iran
Masoud Pezeshkian greeted people and took selfies
in Tehran without security alongside him,
according to state media. A TV presenter called
it “a symbol of bravery and resistance of all
Iranians”. Iran’s Larijani attends Quds Day march
in Tehran, defying Israeli warning TEHRAN One
woman has been killed after multiple explosions
were heard around the al-Quds Day march in the
Iranian capital on Friday, where thousands were
taking part in annual rallies held in solidarity
with Palestinians, as US-Israeli attacks across
the nation continued for the 14th day. Iran’s
national security chief Ali Larijani, attending
the mass rally in Tehran, dismissed the latest
Israeli-US attacks on the capital as being “out
of desperation.” “These attacks are out of fear,
out of desperation. One who is strong wouldn’t
bomb demonstrations at all. It’s clear that it
has failed,” Larijani told state TV while
marching for the annual rally in support of the
Palestinian cause. A large midday explosion on
Friday rocked a Tehran square filled with
demonstrators who were there for the annual
event, Iranian state television reported. The
cause of the blast in Ferdowsi Square was not
immediately known, but it came shortly after
Israel had threatened people to clear the area
because it planned a strike. State media outlet
Press TV said one woman was killed from shrapnel
as a result of a US-Israeli airstrike, without
providing any other specifics. Al Jazeera Arabic
reported an air strike meters away from the
gathering of protesters in Tehran. Crowds turned
out in Tehran and other cities, despite ongoing
US and Israeli strikes in the region during the
commemoration, state media reported. Iranian
President Masoud Pezeshkian called on the
population to participate despite the war. On
Thursday, he posted on X urging his fellow
Iranians to “disappoint Iran’s enemies by taking
to the streets in greater numbers than ever
before”. Iran has marked al-Quds Day on the last
Friday of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan since
its 1979 Islamic Revolution, after the occasion
was declared by the republic’s founder and first
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomeini.

What is goal of Israel? Al Jazeera – attack on
South Pars gas field – Trump didn’t know Israel
was going to attack. Trump says US had ‘no idea’
Israel would attack Pars gas field in Iran US
president warns Iran of ‘massive’ response if
Qatar energy sites hit again US President Donald
Trump on Thursday America had ‘no idea’ of
Israel’s attack on facilities linked to Iran’s
oil industry in South Pars and Asaluyeh,
<https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/trump-says-us-had-no-idea-israel-would-attack-pars-gas-field-iran>warning
of severe military consequences if Tehran
launches more attacks on Qatar’s energy
infrastructure, as tensions across the Gulf
escalated following strikes on major liquefied
natural gas facilities. In a post on Truth
Social, Trump said, “Israel, out of anger for
what has taken place in the Middle East, has
violently lashed out at a major facility known as
South Pars Gas Field in Iran. A relatively small
section of the whole has been hit.” On Wednesday,
facilities linked to Iran’s oil industry in South
Pars and Asaluyeh came under attack, according to
the semi-official Tasnim news agency “The United
States knew nothing about this particular attack,
and the country of Qatar was in no way, shape, or
form, involved with it, nor did it have any idea
that it was going to happen,” Trump said, adding
that Israel will “NO MORE” target Iran’s South
Pars gas field unless Tehran “unwisely decides to
attack a very innocent, in this case, Qatar”. In
such a scenario, the United States, “with or
without the help or consent of Israel, will
massively blow up the entirety of the South Pars
Gas Field at an amount of strength and power that
Iran has never seen or witnessed before”, Trump
wrote on Truth Social. “I do not want to
authorize this level of violence and destruction
because of the long term implications that it
will have on the future of Iran, but if Qatar’s
LNG is again attacked, I will not hesitate to do
so,” he added. The remarks came amid mounting
regional alarm after Qatar reported fires and
damage at its Ras Laffan Industrial City, one of
the world’s largest hubs for liquefied natural
gas production. Regional fallout Qatar’s foreign
ministry condemned what it described as Iranian
attacks on energy facilities in Qatar, Saudi
Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, saying the
strikes have “crossed all red lines.” It called
the targeting of such infrastructure a violation
of international law and a threat to global
energy security and navigation. Iran’s attacks on
the Gulf were a reprisal against Israel’s strike
on Iran’s half of South Pars, the world’s largest
gas field that the Islamic Republic shares with Qatar.

by the US-Israeli aggression. In central Iran, in
Isfahan Province, several world heritage
monuments, including Chehel Sotoon and Naqshe
Jahan Square, have been targeted. In Lorestan and
Kermanshah provinces, several historical
buildings have been damaged during the
aggression. In Siraf Port, in Bushehr Province,
several historical monuments have been damaged
during the strikes. In western Iran, in Ilam
Province, the Museum of Archeology, which houses
numerous historical artifacts, has been targeted
by the aggression. In a post on X on Thursday,
Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sayyed Abbas
Araghchi, condemned the US-Israeli attacks
against Iran’s cultural and historical heritage.
“Israel is bombing Iranian historical monuments
dating as far back as the 14th century. Multiple
UNESCO World Heritage Sites have been struck,” he
wrote. “It is natural that a regime that will not
last a century hates nations with ancient pasts.
But where is UNESCO? Its silence is
unacceptable,” he added. Iran’s Foreign Ministry
spokesman has condemned an attack by the United
States and Israel on a historic site of Isfahan,
saying the strike constitutes a crime against
cultural heritage. According to the 1954 Hague
Convention, the 1977 Geneva Conventions, the Rome
Statute of the International Criminal Court, and
established international law, any attack on
historical sites and cultural heritage in Iran is
a flagrant violation of international
humanitarian law and a clear example of a war
crime. The US and Israeli armed forces began
their military aggression against Iran in late
February by attacking 30 targets across Tehran,
killing several senior Iranian officials,
including the Leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei.

has been accused of backtracking and
contradicting his own statements regarding the

yesterday, Trump slammed the UK for its response
to the war, calling it ‘very disappointing’.
Trump has also asked France, China, Japan, South
Korea and Britain to help secure the Strait of

the President’s own remarks have seemed to
contradict himself, telling reporters: ‘Really,
I’m demanding that these countries come in and
protect their own territory – because it is their
territory.’ Less than an hour later, he said:
‘They should come, and they should help us
protect it. You could make the case that maybe we
shouldn’t even be there at all, because we don’t
need it. ‘We have a lot of oil. We’re the number
one producer anywhere in the world times two.’
Seemingly referencing NATO, Trump added, ‘If we
need help, they won’t be there for us. I’ve known
that for a long period of time.’ Again, moments
later, he said: ‘We have some who are
enthusiastic. They’re coming.’ Speaking to
reporters, Trump also said ‘we want them to come
and help us with the Strait (of Hormuz)’. Later,
he clarified: ‘My attitude is we don’t need
anybody. We have the strongest nation in the
world. We have the strongest military by far – we
don’t need them.’ Varying lengths of the Iran War
At the beginning of the war, Trump said he
thought the strikes in Iran would be ‘four weeks
or so’. Days later, he said the war was ‘very
complete, pretty much’ – before, on the same day,
saying the war wouldn’t end that week, but would
‘very soon’. On why the US attacked Iran In an
address made shortly after attacks began, Trump
said: ‘Our objective is to defend the American
people by eliminating imminent threats from the
Iranian regime. ‘They can never have a nuclear
weapon. That is why in Operation Midnight Hammer
last June, we obliterated the regime’s nuclear
program at Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan after
that attack, we warned them never to resume their
malicious pursuit of nuclear weapons.’ Days
later, Trump said he ‘knew Iran was going to
attack’, claiming that if the US didn’t fight, Iran would attack first.

FT – Ex Bilderberg chairman Etienne Davignon, 93,
accused of Patrice Lumumba assassination. Belgian
aristocrat to face charges over murder of Congo’s
first premier Étienne Davignon, 93, is the only
surviving former official accused in connection
to Patrice Lumumba’s death A Belgian aristocrat
who served as diplomat and European commissioner
will have to face trial regarding his possible
involvement in the murder of Patrice Lumumba, the
Congolese prime minister and independence leader
assassinated in 1961.
<https://archive.is/XSEB3>Count Étienne Davignon,
93, the only remaining survivor among the 10
Belgians accused of involvement in the murder,
was on Tuesday ordered to appear before a court
over his potential participation in war crimes.
Lumumba was the first prime minister of the
Democratic Republic of Congo after it gained
independence from Belgium in 1960, following
about 75 years of brutal colonial rule. He was
murdered in Katanga on January 17 1961, an act
that occurred with the support of the Belgian
government, according to the findings of a
parliamentary commission in 2001. In 2011,
Lumumba’s son filed a criminal complaint against
10 Belgian nationals, accusing them of complicity
in his father’s murder. Other family members
later joined the claim. The assassination of
Congo’s first democratically elected prime
minister was a defining moment of the cold war.
It cemented western influence over Congo and
contributed, according to historians, to
preventing the vast nation at the heart of Africa
from emerging as an independent nation in the
years afterwards. In martyrdom, Lumumba became
one of the most enduring symbols of Africa’s
struggle against colonial rule. The circumstances
of his capture, torture and death have been the
subject of countless films and books. According
to the Belgian federal prosecutor’s office,
Davignon faces charges “for participation in war
crimes related to the unlawful detention or
unlawful transfer of a person protected by the
Geneva Conventions; for having deprived prisoners
of war or an occupied population of the right to
a fair and impartial trial; and for humiliating
and degrading treatment against Lumumba”. Patrice
Lumumba speaks at a press conference, gesturing
with one hand as microphones are held toward him.

Democratic Republic of Congo © AFP/Getty Images
Davignon, who did not respond to a request for
comment, was an intern in the Belgian foreign
ministry’s department for African affairs at the
time of the murder, working in Belgium and the
Congo. A veteran Belgian dealmaker with deep ties
to Europe’s energy and industrial groups,
Davignon was born in 1932 and later became head
of cabinet of Belgium’s foreign minister
Paul-Henri Spaak. In the 1970s and 1980s he was
EU commissioner for the internal market and
industry. Lumumba’s family called Tuesday’s
ruling by the Brussels appeals court “a
significant step: one that acknowledges, however
belatedly, the weight of decisions made against
the life of Patrice Emery Lumumba”. “The legal
system of Belgium begins, at last, to confront
its own responsibilities for acts committed in
the name of colonial rule. For our family, this
is not the end of a long fight, it is the
beginning of a reckoning that history has long
demanded,” the family added. “What we ask of this
court is simple: the truth, spoken aloud, in the
open, on the record of justice and history,” said the Lumumba family.

Protests happening at Fairford. Protestors to

across the country As the US and Israeli attacks
on Iran continue, the number of innocent
civilians killed as a result of the conflict
continues to rise.
far the most shocking atrocity to date is the US
cruise missile attack on the Shajareh Tayyebeh
girls’ elementary school in Minab on 28 February,
which killed 175 people, the vast majority of
whom were school children. In contrast to US
military personnel who have been killed in the
war, the British government and mainstream media
have made virtually no effort to remember the
dead children, humanise them, or respect their
memories.
that devastating attack, 18 US B-1 and B-52 heavy
bomber aircraft have amassed at RAF Fairford and
have started daily bombing missions. The British
government has made the claim that these bombers
will only be involved in “defensive” missions,
even though the US and Israel are illegal
aggressors conducting offensive strikes. The
British government has failed to give any
evidence that it can control, or even know, the
targets that US aircraft flying out of Fairford
are attacking. With no end to this conflict in
sight, Fairford Action will be holding a naming
the dead ceremony outside the main gate of RAF
Fairford, where we will read out the names of
those who were killed in the airstrike on the
school, as well as leaving children’s backpacks
and clothes, and photos of those who died. The
protest at Fairford is part of a nationwide day
of action against the bombing of Iran, including
another major demonstration in London which
assembles at Russell Square from 12 noon followed
by a rally at Whitehall. CND General Secretary
Sophie Bolt said: “This powerful protest at RAF
Fairford couldn’t be more important. The
US-Israeli war on Iran is a total disaster. In
three weeks they have killed thousands of people,
created a global economic crisis and risk
dragging the entire world into a war that could
go nuclear. Keir Starmer needs to end British
support for this catastrophe – that means pulling
the plug on the use of British bases, as well as
ending all British military engagement.”

told Reuters on Thursday that Iran had damaged
facilities that produced 17% of the state-owned
company’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) export
capacity and that it would take three to five
years to repair them. Brent crude, the global oil
benchmark, rose by 10% to $119 a barrel at one
point before slipping back to $110 a barrel, a
gain of 3.3%. Crude prices have soared by 60%
since the US-Israeli war on Iran started on 28
February. European gas prices jumped, with the
Dutch wholesale gas price up 24% at €68 a
megawatt hour, the highest since the end of
December 2022, before easing back. They have more
than doubled since before the war. UK gas prices
have also more than doubled since late February
and are likely to drive up household bills. The
month-ahead UK wholesale gas price rose by 23% on
Thursday morning to 172p a therm, its highest
level since August 2022. It remains well below
the peak of 800p a therm that was momentarily hit
in March 2022. Traders are responding to the
escalation in the Middle East, where Tehran
stepped up its attacks on energy facilities,
causing significant damage to Ras Laffan in
Qatar, the world’s largest LNG facility, in
response to Israel’s attack on Iran’s South Pars
gasfield. The escalation of the war and its
effect on oil and gas prices triggered a sharp
sell-off across stock markets. Japan’s Nikkei
tumbled 3.4%, South Korea’s Kospi fell 2.7% and
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was down 2%. European
markets followed Asia. The UK’s FTSE 100 was down
nearly 3% by early afternoon before closing down
2.35% at 10,063 points. Germany’s Dax and
France’s CAC were 2.3% and 2.2% lower
respectively. Wall Street opened lower. Donald
Trump has threatened to “massively blow up” South
Pars if Iran attacks Qatar again. Israel’s
decision to target the Iranian gasfield was a
significant escalation of the war. QatarEnergy
said Ras Laffan suffered “extensive damage” in Iranian strikes.

Land registry opening up. Government to lift
paywall from large parts of the Land Registry
Finding out who owns land in England is to become
much simpler because a paywall will be lifted
from large parts of the Land Registry, the
government is to announce. A small number of
landowners control the majority of land but
finding out who owns what is difficult to piece
together, even for government departments, owing
to the way the Land Registry operates.
up access will make it easier to determine
ownership of key areas, such as river catchments,
grouse moors and peatland. The change comes as
part of a major reform to the way England’s land
is managed. The government’s long-awaited land
use framework – to be unveiled by Emma Reynolds,
the environment secretary, on Wednesday afternoon
– marks the first time that government has
attempted to assess how best to use farmland,
nature reserves and areas of degraded land to
help balance competing needs for land for food
production, housing, energy and industry. For the
first time, ministers will set out how much land
is needed to meet the UK’s net zero target
through growing forests and restoring peatland as
“carbon sinks” and through energy generation from
solar and windfarms. Only about 1% of land will
be needed for renewable energy generation,
according to the government’s new estimate, and
much of the land required will still be used for
food production, for instance through livestock
grazing around windfarms and under solar panels.
New mapping will also make it easier to assess
how the restoration of peatlands in upland areas
could reduce flooding from rivers, which is
expected to worsen as the climate crisis deepens.
Reynolds said: “It is more important than ever
that we make the right decisions about our finite
land, especially in the face of the dual threat
of the climate and nature crises. The land use
framework will hardwire climate resilience and
nature-based solutions into our decision-making
to ensure that we have safe homes for the
future.” Annoying Guy Shrubsole, Mombioid author
of Who Owns England?, said: “The bold promise to
open up the Land Registry would finally bring to
an end a thousand years of secrecy shrouding who
owns England, and enable greater scrutiny of what
goes on behind the barbed-wire fences that
crisscross the countryside. Given that 1% of the
population own half of England, it’s only
reasonable that the largest landowners should be
held most responsible for restoring nature to
these dewilded isles. The new land use framework
is an ambitious step towards making England a
greener, fairer and more pleasant land.” However,
the government will stop well short of directing
how land must be used in any area. There will be
no attempts to force landowners to give up
control and no national scheme to mandate the
conversion of land to carbon sinks. The framework
will be used to “steer” housebuilders away from
constructing homes on floodplains, after concerns
about the number of new-build homes at risk from
flooding as the deregulation crisis, spun as climate crisis, worsens.

Jeffrey Epstein had two key aides – why do they
still control his money and secrets? Jeffrey
Epstein appointed two men to be executors of his
estate – his accountant Richard Kahn and lawyer
Darren Indyke When the FBI raided Jeffrey
Epstein’s New York mansion in July 2019, on the
day he was arrested for child sex trafficking,
agents forced open a large safe to find diamonds,
bundles of cash, passports, binders of CDs and
hard drives.
an issue with the warrant meant they could not
leave with the items. And when they returned with
a new one, the safe had been emptied while they
were gone – according to FBI documents. Richard
Kahn, Epstein’s accountant and bookkeeper since
2005, had told the mansion’s staff to pack two
suitcases with the contents of the safe and
deliver them to his home, agents wrote. After the
FBI spoke to Kahn’s then lawyer, Kahn agreed to
hand over the suitcases untouched, but he did not
want agents coming to his house and declined to
say who had told him to remove the items.
However, a source close to the investigation into
Epstein told us that he was not aware of Kahn
ever being interviewed or investigated in
relation to the paedophile financier’s criminal
investigation. Kahn’s current lawyer told BBC
News that his client had fully co-operated with
the FBI’s requests. Kahn asked staff at Epstein’s
New York mansion to remove items from a safe,
according to the FBI Kahn, and Epstein’s
long-serving lawyer Darren Indyke, are the sole
executors of Epstein’s estate, controlling all
his wealth and possessions. Although hardly
household names, the pair now hold control over
compensation owed to survivors and the secrets
contained in the documents still held by the
Epstein estate – which, upon request, have been
released to the House Oversight Committee. As
part of its investigation into Epstein’s network,
the congressional committee has subpoenaed –
summoned – the pair to testify. Kahn is appearing
on Wednesday 11 March, while Indyke is due to
testify on Thursday 19 March. We have spoken to
people associated with investigations linked to
Epstein, looked through papers from multiple
court cases, and analysed the most recent
material released in the Epstein files by the US
Department of Justice – to try to uncover more
about the role the two men are alleged to have
played in Epstein’s life and continue to play
after his death. Epstein appointed Indyke and
Kahn as co-executors in August 2019, just two
days before he died in jail awaiting trial for
sex-trafficking minors. He revised his will to
transfer all his wealth into a trust named after
the year of his birth, which the lawyer and
accountant would administer. In their role as
executors, Indyke and Kahn have agreed
compensation packages paid to survivors and
included conditions that prevented survivors who
accepted funds from taking further legal action
against them personally. Other claims are still
outstanding. As beneficiaries of the trust, the
men could also be paid tens of millions of
dollars each from whatever remains when the
claims are settled. Court filings claim that,
either Indyke and Kahn – but often both of them –
“had signatory authority over virtually all of
the accounts held by Epstein”, which meant they
were authorised to make transactions. They also
helped to run multiple Epstein corporations –
some of which, it is alleged in court filings,
existed solely for the purpose of his
sex-trafficking operation. Kahn’s lawyer told us
“there is no basis for such claims” and that
Epstein’s businesses didn’t operate to shield his
activities; “virtually all of them were
tax-filing entities whose ownership was never hidden”.

BBC PM – Stephanie Flanders from Bloomberg on BoE
likely raising interest rates this year and bad

Emerging Due to Mideast War, Supplier Says
Shortages of shipping fuel are starting to emerge
in Asia and West Africa as vessels seek supply
outside the Middle East, according to marine fuel

UAE port of Fujairah just outside the Strait of
Hormuz normally a key hub for shipping fuel
has suffered disruption from drone attacks. The
uncertainty there is creating new and unexpected
demand, according to Casper Borgen, general
manager for Middle East and Africa at the firm.
“From the epicenter in Hormuz, we are seeing how
the rings spread to Asia and West Africa, where
markets are also starting to experience a
shortage of products due to the increasing demand
without the supply being able to keep up,” he
said by email. “There is a bottleneck in one of
the world’s most important energy trade lanes,
and this means many new and major challenges for
all suppliers.” The turmoil in the Middle East
has prompted rationing of fuel in Singapore,
people involved in the trade said this week, with
some distributors limiting or canceling sales.
Scarcity is spreading to other regions, too,
Vessels use a range of fuels from more polluting
high-sulfur fuel oil to cleaner supplies, such as
marine gasoil, which is used in areas with
stricter environmental standards. At Fujairah,
it’s become more difficult to load high-sulfur
fuel oil and very low-sulfur fuel oil due to
partially closed terminals, according to Monjasa.
Borgen said the company is seeing large shifts in
demand patterns each day, and that consumption
has also increased in Latin America, led by
Panama, Colombia. “In these markets, we are
seeing higher volumes and challenges with availability,” Borgen said.

Can we remove US from UK military bases? UK
allowing US use of military bases could violate
international law, rights groups warn Human
Rights Watch calls for ‘urgent clarification’
from Prime Minister Keir Starmer on whether base
usage compliant with international law Rights
groups are sounding the alarm over the legality
of UK involvement in US military strikes on Iran,
following the government’s decision to allow
American use of its military bases.
a letter to the prime minister, attorney general
and foreign secretary seen by Middle East Eye,
Human Rights Watch UK director Yasmine Ahmed
demanded “urgent clarification” on the steps
taken by the government to ensure that US
military strikes conducted from its bases are
compliant with international humanitarian law.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed in early
March that the UK had agreed to allow the US to
use its military bases for what he said were
defensive purposes. On Friday, Downing Street
announced that the agreement had been expanded to
allow for the US to launch strikes from UK bases
on Iranian sites targeting the Strait of Hormuz –
also invoking “collective self-defence” of Gulf
state allies as a legal basis for the decision.
Ahmed said that, while the government’s legal
justification for the move invokes self-defence,
it fails to mention issues related to
international humanitarian law. She emphasised
that, despite this omission, both international
humanitarian law (IHL) and international criminal
law (ICL) “are applicable to the UK’s decision to
allow the US to use its military bases to strike
targets in Iran”. The letter explained that,
under Common Article 1 (CA1) of the Geneva
Conventions, states are obligated to ensure
respect for IHL, but are also bound to ensure
others who are party to a conflict do the same.
Ahmed noted that, while the UK government
disputed this second obligation in a recent
judicial review of its decision to continue
exporting F35 parts to Israel, it is
“inconsistent with well documented practice”. She
explained that the blanket approach “fails to
take account of how obligation may arise in the
context of joint military operations or where a
state is providing support to another state in
the context of military operations, where the
issue of ability to influence is clear”.
“Providing support, which would include the use
of a military base, with the knowledge that such
support will contribute to violations of IHL
would violate CA1,” Ahmed said. She added that
states were obliged to take proactive steps to
stop rights violations by exerting influence on
the party that is committing them. “Importantly,
this obligation is not limited to stopping
ongoing violations; it also includes an
obligation to prevent violations when there is a
foreseeable risk that they will occur and to
prevent further violations in case they have
already occurred,” Ahmed emphasised. Serious
questions unanswered The letter outlined a number
of instances which have raised questions around
US compliance with IHL and its approach to
civilian harm. These include an airstrike on
Shajareh Tayyebeh primary school in the southern
Iranian city of Minab, at the start of the

NATIONS: Gulf states and Iran exchanged sharp
verbal attacks during an emergency session at the
United Nations maritime body, which convened
talks over mounting concerns about shipping
disruptions in the Middle East. Maritime body
holds emergency talks The international maritime
organisation held emergency discussions focused
on the escalating threats to shipping routes in
the Middle East region. The session saw Gulf
nations and Iran engage in a heated war of words,
underscoring the deep tensions that continue to
affect maritime security in the area. The
emergency meeting was called to address the
growing challenges faced by commercial vessels
navigating through key Middle Eastern waterways,
which serve as critical arteries for global trade
and energy supplies. Tensions on display at the
UN The diplomatic confrontation at the UN forum
highlighted the ongoing rivalry between Gulf
states and Iran, with both sides levelling
accusations against each other. The exchanges
reflected broader geopolitical frictions that
have long affected the region’s stability and, by
extension, international shipping lanes.
