malicious communications”. The one-day conference
in north London is being organised for 14
January. ‘Blow up the venue’ Planned speakers
include Wes Streeting, Peter Mandelsen, Bridget
Phillipson and Pat McFadden. Ms Bradley posted on
X: “Somebody blow up the venue!” Formerly the
member for Brislington West, Ms Bradley resigned
from Bristol City Council in 2020, citing
ill-health. She was suspended from the Labour
Party in 2019 for a different social media post
that the party deemed as anti-Semitic. Ms Bradley
was also a former professor in Sociology at the
University of Bristol and at University of the
West of England (UWE) Bristol. ‘I am ashamed’
Both universities have now stripped her of an
honorary title. Ms Bradley said: “I want to offer
an apology on what was a very ill-considered
stupid tweet, I am ashamed of having made it. “It
has had awful consequences for me obviously and
I’d like to apologise to anybody who was upset,
offended, frightened even.” Mike Katz, the
national chair of the Jewish Labour Movement,
said the tweet was especially harmful considering
a recent rise of antisemitism. He said: “I’d say
if you are an academic, you’d think that words
matter, what you say matters and it can have an
impact. “I don’t think that this is something she
was going to do but I think you have got to take
the possibility of incitement very seriously.
“There is a real feeling of uncertainty around
the Jewish community,” he added. ‘Deeply
dismayed’ A University of Bristol spokesperson
said: “We are deeply dismayed by the inflammatory
comment on social media from a former employee
who has long since retired, and are taking
appropriate action. “We can confirm that we have
withdrawn the Emeritus and Honorary Status of
retired employee Professor Harriet Bradley with
immediate effect.” The University of Bristol said
the comment was “inflammatory” A spokesperson
from UWE said: “Harriet Bradley’s permanent
employment at UWE Bristol ended in 2018.
“Following her recent offensive remarks on social
media, we can confirm that her honorary title of
Emeritus Professor has been removed with
immediate effect.” Avon and Somerset Police said:
“We are aware of a social media message in
response to the announcement of a Jewish Labour
Movement conference next year – since deleted by

social media platforms, our TV channels to
gaslighting us into blaming our neighbors from
the me for the mess. They want you angry, just
not at them. Our message to our friends and our
neighbours is if you want to know why your life
is getting harder and why everything keeps
getting worse, know that the people who control
your food, your home, your energy, and your
media, they are sending billions of your
hard-earned money to the Cayman Islands. And
they’ve got three political parties, Labor, the
Conservatives, and reform all sewn up. [Applause]

Although the protest had been approved 6 weeks in
advance, the police (aka the Starmer government)
banned tractors from Whitehall with less than 24
hours notice. As many had already left farms as
far away as Cornwall, their tractors rolled into
London from dawn, and in the resulting chaos
ended up scattered across the city. Later, police
began seizing tractors and arresting farmers who
wouldn’t move their tractors from the peaceful
protest. If our farmers continue to be
undermined, we will be left with lab-grown meat,
and 3D-printed goo; the next generation of junk
food as opposed to real food grown by real
farmers in mineral rich soil, providing food
security, healthy food, and connection to the
land. Now more than ever, support your local
farmer. Get to know them, buy direct, shorten the
supply chain, and put money in the pockets of
those who feed us – not corporations set on destroying them.

Umer Khalid, who has been held on remand since
August, joined the strike on Thursday 4 December.
He is accused of involvement in a break-in at RAF
Brize Norton in June in which activists allegedly
vandalised two planes. Two fellow hunger strikers
– Teuta ‘T’ Hoxha and Kamran Ahmed – have already
been hospitalised, with Ahmed’s sister saying she
fears for his life. Supporters of the hunger
strikers announced a “phone blockade” of the
Ministry of Justice on Friday, with scores of
people signing up to tell the ministry it is
“putting the prisoners’ lives in danger every
day” by refusing to engage with them. The hunger
strikers have made five demands: immediate bail,
the deproscription of Palestine Action, an end to
censorship of their communications, the closure
of UK sites of Israeli weapons firm Elbit
Systems, and a fair trial. On Wednesday, deputy
Green party leader Mothin Ali visited two of the
hunger strikers at HMP Bronzefield. Jon Cink was
“so thin he looked almost skeletal”, Ali said,
while Amu Gib’s “cheekbones were sticking out,
their eyes had sunken in”. Gib, along with fellow
detainee Qesser Zuhrah, began refusing food on 2
November. Ali said that Zuhrah’s condition was
“highly dangerous” and that she had been denied
adequate care. The Labour government has remained
silent on the hunger strike, but backbencher John
McDonnell has tabled an Early Day Motion calling
on justice secretary David Lammy to intervene and
uphold the prisoners’ human rights.

was a dedicated member of the movement who
reported on stories for independent media and a
well known and respected member of the local
community. David suffered a medical emergency on
the road opposite HMP Pentonville. A medically
trained person in attendance at the demonstration
rushed to assist him and an ambulance was called
immediately. Our love and respect go to the
comrades who remained by David’s side on the busy
high road, shielding him with their keffiyahs and
flags to protect his dignity. Their care in that
moment was profound and our hearts are with them
too. Those closest to David have observed that he
passed away engaged in the work he cared about
the most – documenting and reporting on the
Palestine solidarity movement, work he had been carrying out for decades.

is hunting for a face-saving imperfect peace
after admitting Russia can’t be beaten. But
London, and the EU ­ delusional, hysterical, and
terrified of the coming reckoning from their own
populations, keeps pushing the kind of escalation
that guarantees one outcome: Russia removing
Ukraine’s coastline so the Black Sea can’t be
used as NATO’s private terrorism platform. Every
naval-drone attack, every strike on a tanker,
every British engineered terror op doesn’t weaken
Russia, it strengthens Russia’s moral, legal and
military argument for needing Odessa. On Nov 21,
Ukraine launched a MAGURA V5 naval drone packed
with ~200 kg of explosives at the Russian tanker
SIG, a civilian vessel transporting fuel.

drone-and-missile strike hit Sevastopol’s
shipyard, damaging a patrol ship and igniting a
fire visible for kilometres. In October, multiple

Ukraine’s GUR bears the hallmark of
British-assisted targeting and mission-planning
systems. The pattern is undeniable, Ukraine’s
entire maritime warfare capability is thanks to
the West. These naval drones didn’t glide across
the Black Sea on luck and instinct. With
operational ranges approaching 800 kilometers,
Ukraine’s MAGURA V5 drones strike far beyond
coastal waters, but only with the eyes and brains
of NATO. They rely on Western ISR: real-time
satellite feeds from the UK and France, RQ-4
Global Hawk patrols off Romania, Starlink uplinks
beaming mission data, and British-assisted target
coordination. Europe wasn’t just observing. It
was triangulating and commanding. And now, after
cheering on attacks launched with AI-assisted
maritime drones and foreign-fed targeting, Europe
feigns shock that Moscow may erase access to the
very coastline launching them. Europe is not
supporting Ukraine. Europe is sacrificing it,
with full knowledge of what these strikes
provoke. Every official in Brussels, London, and
Paris understands Russia’s red lines, they’ve
memorized them for years. They know that
attacking civilian tankers, port infrastructure,
and Black Sea Fleet assets from a Nato-commanded
coastline forces Moscow to harden the entire
southern theater. Yet they push Zelensky, their
puppet, into terror operations that guarantee
Odessa becomes a battlefield and cease forever to
be a bargaining chip. When a coastline becomes a
NATO forward-operating platform masquerading as a
proxy state, removing that coastline becomes
self-defense. Europe knows this. Washington knows
this. That is precisely why Europe, cornered and
terrified of the political reckoning on its own
soil, keeps escalating. Starmer fears British
rage at the coming humiliation. Macron fears the
streets of France. They all know what’s coming.
And here lies the supreme irony: the same
political caste that spent decades sneering that
Russia was “a glorified gas station” is now
petrified at the thought of facing Russia without
American cover. Moscow now has zero incentive to
leave a hostile coastline intact. Landlock Kiev.
Neutralize NATO’s Black Sea fantasies. When
Odessa falls, Europe will shriek “aggression,”
pretending not to remember who designed the
drones, who funded and commanded the operations,
daring Russia to respond. But the world will
remember. And history will not record this as
conquest. It will record it as the foreclosure of
a coastline weaponized by Europe’s own madness.
Russia will will by turn the map into a verdict,
one future generations of Europeans will demand
their leaders answer for, and there will be hell
to pay for the betrayal of Europe.

NATO considering ‘pre-emptive’ strikes against
Russia – The chair of the Nato Military Committee
says a more aggressive approach may be needed to
deter Putin Nato is considering “pre-emptive”
action against Russia following a string of
hybrid attacks on Europe, a senior official in
the alliance has warned.

Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, an Italian who serves as
chair of the Nato Military Committee, said the
alliance may need to adopt a more “aggressive”
approach to deter Moscow from continuing its
campaign of drone incursions and cyber attacks in
Europe. A recent Financial Times investigation
revealed how Nato has been put on high alert
after three vessels in the Baltic Sea were
accused of dragging their anchors in a bid to
damage energy and communication cables, with a
total of 11 incidents recorded. Other incidents
include frequent cyber attacks on European
countries and incursions of Russian drones into
Nato airspace. Admiral Dragone told the FT that
the alliance was “studying everything” in
deciding how to respond. “On cyber, we are kind
of reactive. Being more aggressive, or being
proactive instead of reactive, is something that
we are thinking about,” he said. He acknowledged
that such an approach would be unusual for Nato,
but that new tactics may be required as the war
in Ukraine nears the end of its fourth year.
Admiral Dragone argued that a “pre-emptive
strike” by Nato could be considered a “defensive
action”, despite it being “further away from our
normal way of thinking and behaviour”. “Being
more aggressive compared with the aggressivity of
our counterpart could be an option. [The issues
are] legal framework, jurisdictional framework,
who is going to do this?” In January this year,
Nato launched Operation Baltic Sentry, a mission
to better patrol the region and deter a possible
Russian attack. This included amping up the
number of patrol aircraft, warships and drones.
Russia was not directly named in the
announcement, but Nato secretary general Mark
Rutte said at the time that the alliance would
improve its monitoring of Moscow’s “shadow
fleet”, a term that refers to ships without clear
ownership that are used to carry sanctioned oil.
Admiral Dragone added that this had been a
positive step by Nato to make the region safer.
“From the beginning of Baltic Sentry, nothing has
happened. So this means that this deterrence is
working,” he said. However, concerns still exist
about whether the operation is going far enough.
A court in Finland recently dismissed a case
against a crew on board a shadowfleet ship that
damaged undersea cables in the Gulf of Finland,
because the incident happened in international
waters. Russia said on Monday that Admiral
Dragone’s remarks were “extremely irresponsible”
and an attempt to move towards escalation.
Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria
Zakharova said: “We see in it a deliberate
attempt to undermine efforts to overcome the
Ukrainian crisis. The people making such
statements should be aware of the risks and
possible consequences, including for the alliance members themselves.”

All three survived, as did Ms Sturgess’s
boyfriend, Charlie Rowley, who had unwittingly
given her the bottle containing the killer nerve
agent. Previously, the Sturgess inquiry heard
that paramedics who attended to Charlie Rowley
formed a view he was suffering from nerve agent
poisoning, but the police disagreed with them.
The inquiry heard Mr Rowley was known to
Wiltshire Police as a drug user. Temporary
Superintendent Kerry Lawes, who was a detective
sergeant at the time of the poisoning, gave
evidence to the inquiry in central London on
Monday. In an email sent to the coroner on July
1, before Ms Sturgess’ death, she said the police
had received a report of a possible nerve agent
poisoning, which she believed was a drugs
overdose. In the email she said the ambulance and
fire brigade who attended the scene had “panicked
somewhat”, adding that Dawn Sturgess and Charlie
Rowley were “two well-known drug addicts”.
However, it has since come to light that there is
no evidence that Dawn Sturgess was a drug user,
and they had indeed been subject to nerve agent
poisoning. Ms Lawes, who could not attend the
inquiry in person, apologised for these comments
in a statement which was read out on her behalf.
“I have stated the ambulance and fire panicked
somewhat, this was an unprofessional comment to
make and I would like to take the opportunity to
apologise for it,” she said. She said her belief
that the incident was drugs related was
influenced by information she had received from
the police. She also apologised for writing that
Ms Sturgess was an addict. “I now know there is
no intelligence to support the assertion that
Dawn Sturgess was herself a user of illegal drugs
or an addict,” she said. She added that she had
always acted in good faith and based on what she
thought was in the best interests of the
individuals involved. Detective Sergeant Eirin
Martin also gave evidence to the inquiry. She
received a handover on the case from
then-detective sergeant Lawes on July 2. She said
the police’s initial hypothesis was that Ms
Sturgess and Mr Rowley had ingested drugs cut
with pesticides, and this had caused them to
overdose. Because of this hypothesis she asked
Wiltshire Police’s media team to send out a press
release on July 2 warning of a potential “bad
batch” of drugs. “At the point I made the press
release in relation to the contaminated drugs
that was, at that point, the primary hypothesis,” she said.

Not Novichok poisoning – Fentanyl. Doctor was

bench gave evidence at the Inquiry. On Tuesday,
October 29, Ms Helen Ord, at the time a
paediatric registrar, was walking back to
Sainsbury’s car park with her partner, Chris,
after going shopping. It was at this stage they
saw two people on a bench who were later
identified as Sergei and Yulia Skripal.

as “odd” and the lady next to him was in a “very
odd position”. She continued to walk and said to
her partner “they don’t look very well”. She
described how the female’s body was “hooked”
around the bench and she appeared to be fitting –
having a tonic clonic seizure. The lady was very
“pale and waxy” and the male was “mumbling” and
words were “foreign” A military nurse (now
identified as Alison McCourt) and her husband
were next to stop and help. “It was very unusual
for two people to be unwell at exactly the same
moment, which was clearly what was happening”, Ms
Ord said. Ms Ord says it took 30 minutes for the
ambulance to arrive. “It felt like a long time
for the ambulance to arrive, it was about 30
minutes in total. The lady was continuing to fit
and I was very worried she was going to arrest”
Later that evening, Ms Ord was contacted by a
police officer – asking how she was. He advised
that she was to throw her clothes away, telling
her the pair had been poisoned with Fentanyl. She
said: “I thought this strange due to the reaction
with Narcan. I did not know Fentanyl was a
recreational drug, it fits with his pupils being
constricted, but Narcan would have worked if it
was Fentanyl. I also thought it strange that he
would tell me to throw away my clothes if they
thought it was Fentanyl.” She told the Inquiry
that Fentanyl is ‘not a dangerous drug to touch’.
Ms Ord added: “Prior to me understanding what had
happened the only things I could categorically
say was that it was an extremely bizarre incident
that I had never seen anything like before, that
my suspicion was that it had been a poisoning of
some description whether that was an intentional
take of something or not, I would have no idea.”

possible solution to the baffling Skripal puzzle.
What if the third man, or perhaps the man who was
supposed to take his place, was by then lying in
Salisbury Hospital in a coma from opiate
poisoning? What if Sergei Skripal was a triple
agent trying to escape back to Russia to tell the
world the truth about the Steele Dossier, which
he had helped to concoct as a scurrilous, obscene
joke and which had unexpectedly become the new
bible of the insane war party in Washington? This
is the alternative narrative I will set out in
detail here so that the reader can judge whether
it forms a more plausible and coherent story than
the mishmash of improbabilities, absurdities and
contradictions served up by the British police
and MI6. Of course in the absence of all the
facts we must sometimes use imaginative
reconstruction to fill in the gaps, but the point
is to see how many thorny problems, raised by the
facts we do have, can be solved by this narrative
and cannot be solved by the official one. It is
not necessary to decide whether Skripal was a
triple agent from the start (that is, a plant
sent across in a spy swap, a classic Cold War way
of infiltrating the enemy) or whether he became a
triple agent when he realized how important this
grotesque Steele Dossier had become and how much

Russians would pay him to come back and demolish
it. What evidence there is (his phone call in
2012 to his old school friend, Vladimir
Timoshkov, whose account of it three weeks after
the poisoning gained widespread UK media
coverage) suggests he started out as a purely
mercenary traitor. Disillusioned by the collapse
of the USSR into a gangster capitalist state run
by Yeltsin’s mafia cronies, he decided he might
as well profit from it by selling the corpse of
what had once been his country to the highest
bidder. The Russians didn’t seem to think of him
as much more than a common criminal (only worth a
moderate 13-year sentence, instead of the death
penalty he would have got in the USA for
betraying 300 agents) or they wouldn’t have let
him survive six years in their prison. Perhaps
when they exchanged him in the spy swap they gave
him a wink and said: “Since you’re just a
money-grubbing whore, any time you want to come
back with some interesting stuff learned from
working for MI6, let us know and we’ll discuss
the price.” He soon got to learn that interesting
stuff when he was sent to Salisbury, the home
town of his MI6 recruiter and handler, Pablo
Miller. Miller had recruited him in Spain in 1995
and later handled him from Estonia, when he was
posted there as a diplomat. It is a little too
much to believe Skripal’s move to Salisbury was a
coincidence. The two men became friends again,
met regularly in the pub, and there is every
reason to think Miller resumed his role as
handler. Miller was now working for Christopher
Steele, his old boss at MI6, in his private
intelligence firm, Orbis Business Intelligence,
based in Mayfair. This is one of the private
intelligence-gathering outfits run by ex-spies of
the kind Litvinenko used to work for. Just as
Litvinenko got Lugovoy (his accused assassin) to
help him out with due diligence reports on
Russian businessmen because of his more
up-to-date information, so Miller would have used
Skripal in the same way. His help became vital
when Steele got the commission from the
Democratic Party to dig up Russian dirt on Donald
Trump, and they had to invent some GRU set-up of
the Donald with prostitutes in a Moscow hotel.
Miller, the old Russia hand, would have done a
good part of the work on this dossier and would
have needed all the authentic detail his Russian
agent could provide. Perhaps it was Skripal who
came up with the scenario of Trump getting
prostitutes to urinate on the bed the Obamas had
slept in, which hidden cameras filmed. He must at
least have given it his imprimatur as a typical
GRU blackmail ploy to turn somebody into an
asset. And that obscene fiction, the core of the
Steele Dossier, became the basis of the neo-con
legend that Trump was a Russian stooge ­ the
insane underpinning of the whole mad Mueller probe into “Russian collusion”….

procurement, asked for and was given in writing
“senior assurances” that previous problems with
noise and vibration had been resolved before he
announced on 6 November that it was ready for
use. He also said other countries might be
interested in buying what the UK government has
billed as “the world’s most advanced
medium-weight armoured fighting vehicle”. Yet,
barely a fortnight later, 31 troops suffered
sickness and hearing issues after being deployed
on the Ajax vehicles during war games on
Salisbury Plain. Also – just weeks before Mr
Pollard made his announcement at a factory in
Merthyr Tydfil, where the American defence
company General Dynamics is manufacturing the
machines – yet more soldiers had become unwell
and even had to go to hospital after their time
inside the vehicles. The procurement minister and
his boss, John Healey, the defence secretary,
will surely be demanding answers from General Sir
Roly Walker, the head of the army, as well as
civil servants at the Ministry of Defence’s (MoD)
procurement arm – Defence Equipment and Support –
and General Dynamics. Ministers must be perplexed
as to how this could possibly be happening again.
A litany of woes affecting the £5.5bn Ajax
contract has been well documented by several
inquiries. They were triggered when previous
trials of the vehicle were belatedly halted in
2020 after troops were harmed by excessive noise
and vibration. An investigation into that debacle
found that senior officers had failed to act
despite knowing for up to two years that the Ajax
vehicle put soldiers at risk of harm. The health
and safety report called the failure “complex and
systemic” and said a culture existed of not
treating safety as being equally important to
cost and time. A safety investigation is being
carried out. But when a previous bout of hearing
and sickness injuries during Ajax trials over the
summer emerged, the MoD justified pushing on with
declaring the vehicle to be operational because
no “systemic” problem had been found.

will concede but every single bit of kit we field
has endless issues: SA80; Eurofighter; Merlin;
Milan; PLCE; F35; The Aircraft Carriers;
Challenger 1 and 2 tanks; Bowman Radio; Sabre;
There’s literally loads. Because we never buy kit
off the shelf that’s proven.

The claims come in the week that it was revealed
that Defence Minister Luke Pollard was not made
aware of concerns surrounding the Ajax platform
prior to signing the armoured vehicle off for use
by soldiers. Mr Pollard told reporters in Merthyr
Tydfil on November 5: “Ajax has overcome
significant challenges, but importantly, we can
say it has left its troubles behind. “Ajax has
proved itself in the field to be the most
advanced medium-weight armoured fighting vehicle
on the planet, and we have more than a full
squadron ready to go, ready to fight, ready to
win, with more in the pipeline.” Mr Pollard is
understood to have had written assurances from
senior officers overseeing the project but was
forced to issue a “do not use” order across the
Army following dozens of injures to soldiers,
three of whom are now at risk of being medically discharged from the forces.

Mr Khan’s human rights were being respected.
Imran Khan is suffering from isolation after
weeks of being denied access to relatives, his
family have said. Khan has been in jail since his
August 2023 arrest after he was handed a
three-year prison term for illegally selling
state gifts. Now two of his three sisters have
spoken out about the former Pakistani prime
minister’s plight. Uzma Khanum was the only
family member permitted to meet him in Adiala
jail, Rawalpindi, where supporters of his
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party had gathered
to protest against the conditions of the
73-year-old’s detention. Ms Khanum said that
Khan, a former cricketer, is facing isolation and
psychological strain in prison following weeks in
which his family said access had been blocked.
“He’s physically well,” said Ms Khanum. “But he’s
kept inside all the time, and only goes out for a
short while. There’s no contact with anybody.”
The meeting took place under strict supervision,
said Ms Khanum, though she declined to provide
further details. PTI says routine prison visits
have been blocked for weeks despite court orders,
fuelling rumours about his condition and possible
prison transfers. ‘Suppressing the people’ One of
Khan’s other sisters Aleema Khan told The World
with Yalda Hakim that she believes Pakistani
authorities were isolating him as an attempt to
“suppress the people of Pakistan”. “I think they
are operating out of fear. He represents 90% of
this country. How can you put a person who
represents 90% of the country in jail? “They
basically want to suppress the people of
Pakistan. They don’t want their voice to be heard
and they are standing behind Imran Khan. They
thought if they isolated [him] people will forget
him.” Authorities deny any mistreatment, and say
that Khan is receiving all entitlements available
to prisoners. Ahmed Hassan Al-Arabi, an advisor
to Pakistan’s Ministry of Information, told Sky
News: “The jails are there as a punishment. They
are there for the criminals to stop the evil from
the criminals emanating into the society. “If it
has to become a political hub, there is no point
of jail. Imran Khan’s sisters have been given
access [to him]. “There is no distinction between
politicians and Imran Khan’s family members,
unfortunately”. Khan served as prime minister
from 2018 to 2022. He has claimed that the
charges against him are politically motivated –
and aimed at blocking his political career.
Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, is serving time in the
same prison over corruption, but they are not
allowed to see each other except when they appear
in court, his supporters have said.

Even the arrangement in chapters is much the same
– the twenty-four chapters of the Protocols
corresponding roughly with the twenty-five of the
Dialogue. Only towards the end, where the
prophecy of the Messianic Age predominates, does
the adaptor allow himself any real independence
of his model. It is in fact as clear a case of
plagiarism – and of faking – as one could well
desire. In 1884, according to Victor Marsden, who
produced the first English translation, a woman
named Yuliana Glinka, a disciple of H.P.
Blavatsky, hired Joseph Schorst-Shapiro, a member
of Joly’s Misraïm Lodge, to obtain sensitive
information, and purchased from him a copy of the
Protocols, and subsequently gave them to a friend
who passed them on to Sergei Nilus.[19] The
Protocols were first mentioned in the Russian
press in April 1902 by the Saint Petersburg
newspaper Novoye Vremya, written by a famous
conservative publicist Mikhail Menshikov, who
reported “how the lady of fashion [Glinka] had

– Liberal MP Chrystia Freeland will move to
Oxford, England, to take on a new position next
summer administering the Rhodes Trust, the
educational charity confirmed Thursday. The
charity is famous for its prestigious Rhodes
Scholarship, which offers students from around
the world the chance to study at the University
of Oxford. It announced Wednesday evening that
Freeland has been appointed CEO of the Rhodes
Trust and Warden of Rhodes House, a building on
the university’s campus, starting July 1, 2026.
Spokesperson Babette Littlemore confirmed by
phone Freeland will move to Oxford for the role.
But Freeland herself has not announced plans to
resign as a member of Parliament. Freeland’s
office did not respond to calls or emails
Thursday. Her local Liberal riding association
for University­Rosedale did not have information
related to her new role, presumed departure or
preparations for an eventual candidate nomination
race for a byelection. Neither the Prime
Minister’s Office nor the House of Commons
Speaker’s office had further information. The
Rhodes Trust press release that announced her
appointment includes a quote from Freeland saying
she’s honoured to take on the role with her alma
mater. “Having personally benefited from a Rhodes
Scholarship, I know how deeply transformative and
influential it can be on the lives and futures of
our scholars. The experience helped shape my
international outlook and played a defining role
in guiding my subsequent career,” she said.
Freeland earned a degree in Slavonic Studies at
the University of Oxford in the early 1990s. The
former finance minister and deputy prime minister
was in the running for the Liberal party
leadership earlier this year and ran a scrappy
campaign that positioned her early on as the
candidate who would bring the most aggressive
fight to U.S. President Donald Trump in his trade
war against Canada. She ultimately lost to Mark
Carney, who became prime minister in March.
Freeland served dual roles in Carney’s cabinet as
internal trade minister and transport minister,
and led a push to reduce internal trade barriers
in Canada. She abruptly stepped down from cabinet
in September to take on a special role
representing the Carney government on matters
dealing with the reconstruction of Ukraine.
Freeland developed a reputation as one of the
staunchest defenders of Ukraine in its war
against Russia, and led an international push to
seize Russian assets for the purpose of

arrest of Federica Mogherini, who led the EU

Authorities in Belgium made the arrests Tuesday
after raiding the offices of the EU diplomatic
service in Brussels and a college in Bruges.
Mogherini now serves as the rector of the College
of Europe, a prestigious institute of European
studies. The European Public Prosecutor’s Office
said in a statement that Mogherini, a senior
staff member of the college and a senior official
from the European Commission were detained at its
request and questioned by the Belgian Federal
Judicial Police. “The accusations concern
procurement fraud and corruption, conflict of
interest and violation of professional secrecy,”
the prosecutor’s office said. The three were not
considered flight risks and were released, the
office said. As the bloc’s top diplomat,
Mogherini was responsible for supervising the
Iran nuclear talks, leading efforts to improve
long-strained relations between Serbia and
Kosovo, and a host of other foreign policy and
security issues. Police searched the properties
of the suspects, several buildings of the college
and the headquarters of the European External
Action Service, or EEAS, the EU’s equivalent of a
foreign office, which sits at the center of the
bloc’s institutions in Brussels, the prosecutors
said. No outside actor, or country, has been
named so far in the investigation. Mogherini said
in a statement that she “clarified” her position with investigators on Tuesday.
