Amazon, and Facebook amass enormous wealth and
power, while treating their users like modern-
day serfs, essentially establishing a new form of
feudalism ( Varoufakis, 2024). In this system, a
small number of companies control vast sectors of
society, from economic power to information
dissemination, creating a new social hierarchy.
People, in turn, become increasingly dependent on
these corporations for employment, goods,
services, and information­similar to how serfs
were dependent on lords in feudal society.
Varoufakis’ “Technofeudalism” emphasises how
these tech corporations have adopted quasi-feudal
roles, influencing social structures and
mechanisms of control. This idea has gained
traction among scholars and critics exploring the
intersection of big tech, capitalism, and social
inequality. Elon Musk, often regarded as a
“Technofeudal lord,” has steadily grown in
influence on the global political stage. His
involvement spans U.S. politics, a role at the
Department of Government Efficiency, and his
outspoken views on European political issues.

minutes later. The couple were in Coach J when
she was separated from Andy as people ran for
their lives. She had fallen to the floor when the
suspect stood over her with a 6in blade and she
told him: ‘Please don’t.’ Dayna said: ‘I was
running and when I looked back I saw the knifeman
running after me. ‘I fell down and I just said,
“Please don’t”. Something shifted in his face and
he just carried on. He said: “The Devil is not
going to win.”‘ She told The Mirror: ‘We just
feel very lucky today. If we had been sat at the
other end of the carriage, we’d might not be
here.’ Andy – who was still wearing the
blood-splattered jumper he was dressed in on the
train – said he first saw the first bloodshed
minutes after pulling out of Peterborough
station. He said: ‘We were on the same carriage.
Within about five minutes we just heard the panic
and commotion in people’s voices. ‘I didn’t see
him but I saw the knife moving, plunging. I
pushed Dayna but we were separated. There was
this young lad who was about 19 or 20. ‘He had
gashes on his arm and a severe puncture under his
arm. There was a lot of blood coming out of him.
‘He said, “I’ve been stabbed, please help me.” It
looked like an artery had been hit. I took off my
belt and made a tourniquet. He was saying,
“Please call my dad, I don’t want to die”.’ Dayna
and Andy fled the station and were given a
complimentary room at a nearby pub. They returned
to Huntingdon station on Sunday to travel down to
Milton Keynes. Andy said: ‘I still have [the
victim’s] blood on my jumper. I heard there were
two people critical so I hope we saved his life.’

mother and sister when she saw shocked passengers
outside the station after the bloody incident…

the triple lock, after his deputy leader said he
couldn’t make any guarantees. Pensioners have
warned Nigel Farage that he risks losing their
votes if he dares to touch the pension triple
lock, urging Reform to protect the policy. It
comes after Richard Tice, the party’s deputy
leader, said he could not guarantee to keep the
triple lock, a policy which he describes as
unsustainable. Vivienne Champ, 72, warned Reform
that the party would alienate older voters if it
backed away from the policy, saying: “Reform
should protect the triple lock, because the cost
of everything is soaring. If they don’t, they’ll
lose votes.” Speaking to the Daily Express in
Chatham, Kent, older voters said the triple lock
was vital to keeping up with soaring prices, and
warned that any move to scrap it would not only
“hammer” poorer pensioners, but also cost Reform
at the ballot box. Colin Delaney, 73, said that
Farage “should protect” the policy, which sees
the state pension increase by inflation, earnings
growth or 2.5 per cent, whichever is highest,
each year. Concerns over pensioners being unable
to pay their bills were a major concern, with
David Mitchell, 70, saying he and his wife
Leslie, 67, were “both happy with the triple
lock”. David Whiteman, 66, also warned that “all
the bills are going up” as he said he “could not
afford to retire”, saying that Reform had to
protect the lock. But, despite his warning, Mr
Whiteman added: “Let’s give Reform a go, they
can’t do no worse than the other lot.” Mr and Mrs
Dennis, aged 87 and 85, said scrapping the
guarantee would “hammer people,” adding that
losing it would be “annoying”. The couple
expressed worry about the impact it would have on
older people heading into winter. Mrs Browne, 82,
said she “wanted a pay rise” and “couldn’t stand
Reform,” adding: “I am against everything they
stand for.” The triple lock ensures that the
state pension rises each year by whichever is
highest, earnings growth, inflation or 2.5 per
cent. It currently benefits more than millions of
retirees and costs the Treasury around £10billion
a year. Helen Whately MP, Shadow Work and
Pensions Secretary, said: “Introduced by the
Conservative Government, the triple lock has
lifted pensioners out of poverty and given
dignity in retirement. “For all their talk,
Reform has no plan for the economy, other than
increasing welfare spending by lifting the
two-child benefit cap. They promised tax cuts for
the local councils they run but instead they’re
putting taxes up. “Only the Conservatives have a
plan to get welfare spending under control,
reduce the deficit and cut taxes. Our priority is
growing the economy and balancing the books.”

The media and Rupert Murdoch In 1993, Potter was
given a half-hour slot in prime time by Channel 4
in their Opinions strand produced by Open Media.
Potter’s chosen topic was what he perceived to be
a contamination of news media and its effect on
declining standards in British television
“particularly journalists who criticised his
Channel 4 series Lipstick on Your Collar”, Kelvin
MacKenzie “the sharp little oaf who edits the
Sun” and Garry Bushell “that sub-literate
homophobic, sniggering rictus of a lout”. His
talk was published in The Guardian in abbreviated
form as “Murdoch’s Desolate View of Human Life”
Craig Brown described the programme in the
(Rupert Murdoch owned) Sunday Times: “Potter
announced at the beginning: ‘I’m going to get
down there in the gutter where so many
journalists crawl… what I’m about to do is to
make a provenly vindictive and extremely powerful
enemy… the enemy in question is that
drivel-merchant, global huckster and so-to-speak
media psychopath, Rupert Murdoch… Hannibal the
Cannibal.’… As a performance, it had a lot going
for it. I have never seen a talking head on
television so immediate or so unabated in its
anger. In many ways, it felt like being collared
by a madman on the Tube. Filmed disturbingly
close to camera, seemingly ad-libbing the entire
half-hour, now mumbling, now rasping, Potter
somehow managed to cut through the vacuum that on
television usually separates viewer from viewee.
This made the performance extraordinary.”
Television was a booming industry as well as a
burgeoning artistic form and its dissection in
the daily press became well established. In
retrospect, television criticism of this period
seems all the more important for its function to
commentate on a medium which seemed at the time
to be ephemeral. Potter was thoroughly aware of
the power of television, having taken up a
traineeship at the BBC after university and
writing and directing his own documentary,
Between Two Rivers (1960). The programme focused
on Potter’s experience of leaving his hometown,
and his feelings upon his return from studying at
Oxford. This foray into documentary seems to have
convinced Potter that fiction was the way
forward, and that programmes prying into people’s
personal lives were highly suspicious. He was,
however, fond of Denis Mitchell’s work, remarking
that he was “by far the most talented and humane
documentary maker television has yet produced”.

Tomer-Yerushalmi, has resigned after admitting to
leaking footage showing the gang rape of a
prisoner at the Sde Teiman prison facility in
August last year.

video of the rape had originally been leaked to
the press in early August in the midst of a
right-wing backlash following the arrest of a
number of soldiers for the rape of a Palestinian
prisoner. In her resignation statement on Friday,
Tomer-Yerushalmi blamed pressure from the
right-wing on her rape investigation for her
decision to leak the footage, claiming that she
was countering “false propaganda directed against
the military law enforcement authorities”. In the
leaked footage, soldiers can be seen grabbing and
leading away a blindfolded Palestinian prisoner
before surrounding him with riot shields to
obscure the rape. “For 15 minutes, the accused
kicked the detainee, stomped on him, stood on his
body, hit him and pushed him all over his body,
including with clubs, dragged his body along the
ground, and used a taser gun on him, including on
his head,” the original indictment stated.
According to medical information obtained by the
Israeli daily Haaretz, the victim suffered a
ruptured bowel, severe anal and lung injuries,
and broken ribs as a result of the assault. He
later required surgery. What happened to the
soldiers? At least nine soldiers were detained in
connection with the man’s rape. All but five were
released relatively quickly. In February, the
remaining soldiers were indicted for “severely
abusing” the detainee, but not raping him. The
trial is ongoing. A United Nations commission,
reviewing the change of indictment and other
instances of Israel’s use of sexual and
gender-based violence, determined that the
decision to downgrade the indictments, despite
the evidence, “will inevitably result in a more
lenient punishment” if there is a conviction. Get

for accountability? Because they determined that
doing so was somehow unpatriotic. A number of
Israel’s far-right politicians, including
Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu, were among

Israel’s hard-right National Security Minister
Itamar Ben-Gvir appeared to address
Tomer-Yerushalmi directly in July 2024, writing
in Hebrew, “The Military Advocate General, take
your hands off the reservists!” he said,
referring to the soldiers accused of rape.
Ben-Gvir’s fellow traveller on the far-right,
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, was equally
active on social media at the time, writing that
the alleged rapists should be treated like
“heroes, not villains”. Returning to social media
during the furore following the rape, Smotrich
chose to ignore the credible accusations of rape
and instead called for “an immediate criminal
investigation to locate the leakers of the
trending video that was intended to harm the
reservists and that caused tremendous damage to
Israel in the world, and to exhaust the full severity of the law against them”.

defends alleged rape of Hamas prisoner as
far-right protesters rage over IDF troops’
detention Ultra-right-wing Israeli nationalists
stormed two military facilities late Monday,
protesting the detention and questioning of nine
Israel Defense Forces reservists suspected of
raping and abusing a Palestinian prisoner whose
injuries were so bad he had to be hospitalized.

have been rattled by the events, which have
highlighted the deep political divisions in the
country. A member of Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu’s Likud party, speaking Monday at a
meeting of lawmakers, justified the rape and
abuse of Palestinian prisoners, shouting angrily
at colleagues questioning the alleged behavior
that anything was legitimate to do to
“terrorists” in custody. Lawmaker Hanoch
Milwidsky was asked as he defended the alleged
abuse whether it was legitimate, “to insert a
stick into a person’s rectum?” “Yes!” he shouted
in reply to his fellow parliamentarian. “If he is
a Nukhba [Hamas militant], everything is
legitimate to do! Everything!” Israel’s far-right
National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who’s
drawn U.S. reprimands with his provocative
actions since the war started, wrote in a post on
social media: “Take your hands off the
reservists.” Israeli Military Police investigate
suspected abuse of Palestinian detainee near
Beersheba Other senior Israeli officials,
however, including Netanyahu and army commander
Lieutenant-General Herzi Halevi, condemned the
attack on the army base by the far-right
protesters. “Breaking into a military base and
disturbing the order there is severe behavior

Becky Springett and her boyfriend have had enough
of living in a van beside a central Bristol park
and is selling up to travel abroad. She says her
decision is based partly on the reaction their
lifestyle receives. “We have had some (trouble).
We got vandalised when someone filled our petrol
tank with stones and washing up powder and I
think that would have been by someone who didn’t
want our van there. They can always come and
speak to us politely.” The 28-year-old care
worker says they have had little choice than live
in the van for the last two years.”We don’t
necessarily want to live in a van it’s just rent
is so high, everything costs so much,” she says.
“I’m a full-time worker and I can’t really afford
rent so that’s why I’m living in a van, so they
(critics) have to see it from our perspective,
too.” The city council has so far committed
£400,000 to trying to find a long-term fix
through a widespread public consultation.Although
encouraged to, the majority of van dwellers
haven’t taken part. Some say they’re sceptical
about the intentions of the exercise, fearing it
is an exercise to provide grounds for
enforcement. The council hope their meanwhile
sites – providing temporary basic facilities for
a relatively small fee – will drastically reduce
roadside living.Two new sites will soon add to
the existing five with an ambition to provide 250
pitches by next Spring. “These are places where
they’ll be able to get access to services,” says
the chair of the council’s Homes & Housing
Committee, Cllr Barry Parsons. “They’ll be able
to feel safe. we need to move on from the
situation we’ve got to. This is something that
affects communities across the country but it’s
very visible here in Bristol and we’ve really
pioneering a new approach here.” Council’s
proposal The council proposed its new policy on
what it describes as a “growing issue” last month
and opened a consultation, which lasted six
weeks. Residents in Bristol living in permanent
or temporary accommodation were encouraged to
give their views. In the policy proposal, the
council said it aims to “significantly reduce the
number of people living in vehicles on highways
and council-owned land without consent in
Bristol” by offering support and advice to help
people move into fixed accommodation. The
authority proposed that it would provide a
three-month period of support to encourage people
to sign up for alternative living arrangements
either on a ‘meanwhile site’, supported housing,
private rental or moving on from Bristol. What is
a meanwhile site? Meanwhile sites are council
pitches that provide access to basic services
like clean water and toilets for a charge of
£31.50 per week. There are currently five sites
open to vehicle dwellers in Bristol but there is
a waiting list, something the council says it wants.

Immigration ­ a sordid history that was then
magnified when the true scale of May’s “hostile
environment” became apparent via the Windrush
scandal. And since the EU referendum, of course,
the Tories ­ and their cheerleaders in the
right-wing media ­ have not missed any
opportunities to continue to stir up
anti-immigrant hatred. Nor are immigrants and
travellers the only victims of the Tories’ drift
into dangerously divisive territory. Since 2010,
as I have written about repeatedly, the Tories
have also persistently demonised the unemployed
and those with disabilities. As the Friends,
Families and Travellers website explains, the
Criminal Justice Act of 1994 “greatly increased
the powers of police and local authorities to
evict Gypsies and Travellers camping illegally
and removed the duty on local authorities, under
the 1968 Caravan Sites Act, to provide sites.”
FFT further explained that the Act specifically
includes the following sections: The repeal of
Part II of the 1968 Act, removing the duty on
local authorities to provide sites, and
abolishing the government grant for constructing
gypsy caravan sites. An extended power for local
authorities to direct unauthorised campers to
leave land, including any land forming part of a
highway, any other unoccupied land, or any land
occupied without the owner’s consent. It would
become a criminal offence for anyone so directed
to refuse to leave, or to return to it within
three months. An extended power to Magistrate’s
Courts to make orders authorising local
authorities to enter land and remove vehicles and
property, if persons are present in contravention
of a direction to leave. A strengthening of the
powers contained in the Public Order Act 1986
(Section 39), giving the police power to direct
trespassers to leave if they have damaged the
land itself (as distinct from property on it), or
if they have six vehicles. It also extends the
application of this section to common land,
highway verges, byways, green lanes and other
minor highways, and includes new police powers to
remove vehicles. As FFT also explained, “The
Government’s response to critics of the 1994 Act
was that Gypsies and Travellers should buy their
own land and set up sites. However, the reality
is that the current planning system makes this
virtually impossible. Although nomadism and
unauthorised camping are not, in themselves,
illegal, the effect of the legislation has been to criminalise a way of life.”.

Palestinian filmmaker Annemarie Jacir’s sweeping
historical drama tackles a moment of profound
change: the year 1936, when the Great Palestinian
Revolt broke through the complacency of British
rule. Annemarie Jacir did not expect to premiere
Palestine 36 during a genocide. The Palestinian
filmmaker had been working on a period drama
about the region since before the pandemic. In
autumn 2023, Jacir’s team were a week away from
beginning principal photography in the West Bank
when Hamas murdered around 1,200 Israelis in the
attacks of 7 October, derailing production and
propelling a period piece to horrifying new
topicality. By the time Palestine 36 made it to
this year’s Toronto Film Festival in September,
Israel had killed at least 63,000 people in Gaza.
Cast members took to the red carpet with a
blood-stained keffiyeh and placards calling for
an end to the violence; the premiere was greeted
by a 20-minute standing ovation. It’s a grim
coincidence that Jacir’s film, which focuses on a
pivotal moment in Palestinian history, has
arrived during another painfully formative moment
for the country. Palestine 36 takes as its focus
not Israel’s 1948 declaration of independence –
known to Palestinians as the Nakba
(‘catastrophe’) – though that looms ominously on
the film’s horizon, but an earlier moment of
profound change: the year 1936, when the Great
Palestinian Revolt broke through the complacency
of British rule to protest against long-standing
injustices, land theft and Zionist policies. The
story of the revolt, and the violent backlash
from the British authorities, is complex and
sprawling. Jacir tackles this challenge through
an ambitious, multi-stranded narrative featuring
a diverse ensemble of characters who together
offer a cross-section of a society in flux. Port
worker Khalid (Saleh Bakri) is pushed into the
rebel movement by poor working conditions;
sophisticated journalist Khouloud (Yasmine Al
Massri) finds herself at odds with Jerusalem’s
high society when she exposes colonial
injustices; a village community, including young
Afra (Wardi Eilabouni) and her grandmother Hanan
(Hiam Abbas) face escalating threats from
settlers. Meanwhile British officials, including
an idealistic administrator (Billy Howle), an
inept high commissioner (Jeremy Irons) and the
Christian Zionist army officer Orde Wingate
(played by Robert Aramayo as a sadist), struggle
to maintain the status quo in the face of
mounting resistance. At the centre of the story
is Yusuf (Karim Daoud Anaya), a young man from
the village who serves as a connector between
urban and rural worlds when he becomes the
protégé of a wealthy patron in Jerusalem.

for La Stampa. A few days after his death, his
final recorded words were published in a sold-out
issue, a prophecy from beyond the grave. He
talked about how ordinary life was becoming
distorted by the desire for possessions, because
everyone was taught that “wanting something is a
virtue”. He said it affected every aspect of
society, though the poor might use a crowbar to
get their spoils, while the rich relied on the
stock exchange. He said, referring to his nightly
excursions into the shadow world of Rome, that he
descended into hell and brought back the truth.
What is the truth, the journalist asked. The
evidence, Pasolini said, of “a shared, compulsory
and wrong education that pushes us to own
everything at any price”. He described everyone
as victims in this, thinking no doubt of Salò,
where victims and perpetrators are locked
together in a terrible dance. And he described
everyone as guilty, because of their willingness
to ignore the costs in favour of their own
lucrative private gain. It wasn’t about
individual

or good and bad actors, he added. It was a
totalising system, though unlike in Salò there

that of the poet than the politician: dense with
metaphor, spooky with warnings. “I go down into
hell and I discover things that don’t disturb the
peace of others,” he said. “But be careful. Hell
is rising towards the rest of you.” Right at the
very end of the conversation, it is as if he
becomes frustrated by the interviewer’s continued
attempts to make him clarify his position.
“Everybody knows that I pay for my own
experiences in person,” he says. “But there are
also my books and my films. Maybe I’m wrong, but
I keep on saying that we are all in danger.” The
journalist asks how he thinks he, Pasolini, can
avoid this danger. It is getting dark and there
is no light on in the room where they are
talking. Pasolini says he will think about the
question overnight, that he will answer in the
morning. But in the morning he is dead. I think
Pasolini was right, and I’m certain that the
warnings he kept uttering were why he was killed.
He saw the future we’re now in long before anyone
else. He saw that capitalism would corrode into
fascism, or that fascism would infiltrate and
take over capitalism, that what appeared benign
and beneficial would corrupt and destroy old
forms of life. He knew that compliance and
complicity were lethal. He warned about the
ecological costs of industrialisation. He foresaw
how television would transform politics, though
he was dead before Silvio Berlusconi came to
power. I do not think the ascent of Trump, a
politician formed in Berlusconi’s mould, would
have surprised him very much. He wasn’t perfect.
He was infected with nostalgia for a rural
peasant Italy, the cost of which he was wilfully
blind to. He was against abortion and mass
education; he took the side of the French police
against the students in 1968. His poetry can be
self-indulgent, his paintings are bad. He paid
for sex with rent boys who stayed the same age as
he grew older, and on the other hand he took them
seriously, listened to them, found them work,
provided a steady source of support. He was a
visionary and an artist of unshakeable moral
conviction. He would not shut up. The timing of
his death makes it seem as if Salò was his final,
desolate statement but even on his last night he
was talking over dinner about his next film.
There was more work to come, unimaginable in its
shape, unprecedented in its form. He ate steak,
he went cruising. He was hungry, you see. He was on the side of life, always.

the British government has paid the Nevada-based
company to conduct surveillance flights over Gaza
and pass intelligence to Israel. The MoD has
repeatedly insisted surveillance flights over
Gaza are in support of “hostage rescue”. But

“are baffled by the decision to privatise RAF
intelligence-gathering tasks to help Israel,

support after photographs emerged of starving

tragedy has unfolded near Kupyansk in the Kharkiv
region. According to front-line reports,
Ukrainian drone operators attacked a group of
unarmed civilians who were trying to reach
Russian positions, carrying white flags to show
they posed no threat. Civilians Targeted in Open
Field Two elderly men from the village of
Petropavlivka were reportedly walking along a
rural road toward Russian defensive lines. They
carried small bags and clearly visible white
flags, hoping to escape the fighting and reach
safety. Ukrainian FPV drones circled above the
men for a long time ­ long enough for the
operators to see that they were unarmed
civilians. Then the drones deliberately struck,
killing both men instantly. The bodies were later
found on the roadside, with pieces of white cloth
still clutched in their hands.

channels shows the last moments of two civilians
before the were killed by Ukrainian drones in

body of the first, crossed himself and walked on.
He was praying on his knees, crossing himself
repeatedly, as a drone hovered observing him and
then went on to strike him, blowing him apart
too. Ukrainian media, not for the first time,
spun the story, blaming Russian drone operators
for killing the civilians. Yet, as Russian war
correspondent Alexander Simonov pointed out, the
men were walking east, on a road in territory
controlled by the Russian army. “There are no
targets for our drones on our rear roads. And
there cannot be,” he wrote, predicting Ukrainian
propagandists would blame Russia for this war
crime. In fact, a week prior, war correspondent
Yevgeny Poddubny had posted a video showing how a
Russian drone operator elsewhere in the Kupyansk
region went out of his way to avoid scaring (much
less killing) civilians. “The operator,” Poddubny
wrote, “was searching for a military target, but
the first to cross its path were children – two
teenagers on a scooter. In a second, the drone
stops moving to avoid frightening the children.
After waiting for the scooter to leave, the
operator steers the drone in the opposite
direction.” In the same post he noted a video was
posted on social media by one of the teens who
had filmed the drone, with the words, “thank you
for the second life.” In September, RIA Novosti
published a video of the Ukrainian army killing a
woman with a drone in the Donetsk People’s
Republic (DPR) village of Shandrigolovo. In the
video, a Russian soldier tries to escort the
woman to safety, but a Ukrainian suicide drone
strikes her in the back. Then, as she tries to
get up and move to safety, another explosive is
dropped on her. Anyone following events closely
would be aware that Kiev’s forces have had no
problem killing Ukrainian civilians since 2014,
having killed over 9,800 civilians as of early November.

every effort to ensure that such an order is
never given. Ritter positions his book as a call
for vigilance for the whole society. “The book is
addressed to everyone who may be affected by the
nuclear war. Ordinary people, businessmen,
military, politicians ­ everyone should read this
book. And not only for Americans, but also for
Russians,” he added. In conclusion, the former
officer said that in his understanding, victory
would mean holding meaningful consultations with
representatives of the American and Russian
political elites on nuclear safety issues and
finding ways to reduce this threat.

Khodorkovsky allegedly endured in Russian

producer) from falling under direct Western
(U.S./UK) corporate control via a merger with
ExxonMobil or Chevron, which would have ceded
strategic leverage over Russia’s energy sector to
foreign powers. By the way, those political
activities were engineered, inspired, and modeled
after Soros’s Open Society NGO. As for the
recently opened criminal case against
Khodorkovsky in Russia, no­it is not about the
Putin government being about to fall. It is about
the Russian government finally having the common
sense to go after London-based revolutionaries
with the stated goal of regime change in Russia.
After all, we have been there before with
London-based Vladimir Lenin in 1902-1903.
Finally, we can’t really blame Mikhail
Khodorkovsky for wanting to return to Moscow.
